The Opening Mass is Sunday, January 20th at 11:30am and will be celebrated by Bishop Nelson Perez in the Upper Church. However, you are also wel-come to the Lower Church where Mass will be televised and you will also be able to receive Communion. Immediately following Mass, all are invited to a Lunch-eon Affair with an International Flair in the Parish Hall at Robbins & Argyle Streets. Please join us and you just may meet some old friends.

The Mass (A Minute in the Church by Gus Lloyd)

Scripture in the Mass—Many people think that the Cath-olic Mass is all rote prayers and rituals. They don’t think the Catholic Church is a “Bible church.” They couldn’t be more wrong. Go to a Catholic Mass and you’ll hear loads of Scripture! Every Mass begins with “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” These are the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:19. The priest then greets the peo-ple with a quote from 2 Corinthians 13:13—”The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ and the love of God and the com-munion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” And if a bishop is celebrating, he’ll quote the words of Jesus from John 20:21—”Peace be with you.” From there you’ll hear two or three readings taken from the Old Testament, the New Testament and one of the Gospels. And you’ll sing or recite from the Book of Psalms. From the Gloria to the Holy, Holy to the Lamb of God to the prayer we say right before receiving Holy Commun-ion—”Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” - a quote from Matthew 8:8, any Catholic who goes to Mass with any regularity can quote lots of Scripture!

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 20, 2019 FOCUS: The Lord has betrothed himself to us in Christ Jesus and we are not abandoned.

The wedding at Cana has Jesus at the heart of the celebration. He is present now as we gather to cele-brate. Here today he bestows upon us his blessings and his gifts—bringing forth faith and reassuring us of his fidelity and abundant grace.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: In relaying the words of the Lord to Israel, Isaiah uses the image of a marriage to describe the relationship between God and his Chosen People. Saint Paul reminds us that the Spirit gives many different gifts to be used to build up the community. The Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ first miracle—turning water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana.

REFLECTION: We need a variety of gifts in the Church. How boring it would be if we all had the same gift, or gifts. And how deprived we would be! Paul is reminding us of our God who sees our needs and addresses them through the different members of the Christian community.

So we ask ourselves: What gift has God given me?

How do I use that gift to serve others? How am I a sign of God’s active presence in the

world?

What and where is the light that never goes out in Church? This question was asked recently by a very inquisitive pre-school child. It is the red Sanctuary lamp which is on top of the Taber-nacle. This is a sign that the Lord is always present and therefore it always remains lit. It is also a reminder to genuflect in the presence of the Lord.

Dear Father Bonner, Thank you for your support of the Pro-Life Union—we are so grateful for your parish’s commitment to the cause of life! The amount of $4,288 donated by your parish during Respect Life Sunday activities will help us to continue to affirm the sanctity of eve-ry human life and support the many women and chil-dren we meet. At our maternity home, Guiding Star Ministries, we have expanded community outreach and are inter-acting with additional families—offering resources and speaking about the humanity of the unborn child. Through our efforts at 40 Days for Life, we have impacted the community and changed hearts. This is possible because of the support of the good people at St. Cecilia. Please give them our thanks! Gratefully, Tom Stevens President of Pro-Life Union
