What is the Catholic Church and what do we believe?

Our very name, “catholic,” means universal. Our core beliefs are summed up in our Creed. We are the original Christian Church, which began when Jesus himself said to the Apostle Peter, “You are the rock on which I will build my church. The gates of hell will not prevail against it.” Every pope since then has been part of an unbroken line of succession since Peter, the first pope. Early in the history of the Church, there was the belief that when Jesus said at the Last Supper, “Take this and eat—this is my body; take this and drink—this is my blood,” he was giving us the gift of his real presence in the form of bread and wine. We call this the Eucharist—a name that comes from the Greek word for thanksgiving. The Catholic Mass is a Eucharistic celebration and a celebration of God’s word in Scriptures. We believe that holy men and women who have come before us still pray for us and aid us. We call them saints, and many of our churches are named for them. First among the saints is Mary, a virgin who gave birth to the child Jesus, and who is hon-ored as the mother of God and the mother of the Church. From the beginning of Christianity, the Catholic Church defined the canon of Scripture—the books you find in every Chris-tian Bible—and defined what it meant to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Through the centuries, it is the Catholic Church that pre-served the Bible, as well as many other written works, through its monasteries and libraries. It instituted the university system in order to educate. We also believe that God is present in beauty—and so we have commissioned and preserved some of the world’s greatest artworks. Without the sponsorship of the Church, Michelangelo would never have painted his famous Sistine Chapel nor carved the Pieta. Today, the Church is the world’s largest charitable organization; we provide a significant portion of social service needs for Americans. There are nearly 250 Catholic universities and colleges in the United States alone, and we also operate this nation’s largest non-public school system. Mostly, we are a billion people on every continent who profess and express a faith in Christ that spans two millennia. FAITH Catholic—An Introduction to Catholicism

SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today’s familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not necessarily our own—will be surprised for the better. Copyright © J. Jubilee Year of Mercy

Mary, whom Catholic tradition names “Mother of Mercy,” at Cana intercedes with her Son to show mercy toward the bridal couple: “Son, they have no wine.” But he does more! Jesus’ transfor-mation of water into wine is a “sign” (John’s term for “miracle”) that God’s marriage with the whole human race has begun in Jesus’ person and ministry, a marriage that will be consummated on the cross: “It is finished”—we are saved! But before Jesus acts, Mary instructs the servers to prepare the way for Jesus’ miracle of mercy: “Do whatever he tells you.” During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Mother Church, like Mother Mary, instructs us to share the Spirit’s manifold gifts—some of which Paul lists in today’s second reading—in generous service to the human family. Thus we prepare the way for Jesus’ new miracles of mercy, transforming life’s sometimes stagnant water into the refresh-ing wine of God’s mercy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

REDISCOVERING YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS IN THIS YEAR OF MERCY As we start this new year of “sweet sixteen” let each of us be mindful of the presence of God in our lives through prayer and reflection. Prayer changes situations and circumstances. Let’s reflect on the fact that: Abraham prayed and God gave him a son. Jacob prayed and he was reconciled with his brother Esau. Paul prayed and the prison was opened and the hardened jailor saved. Prayer even changes the person who prays. David prayed and he became a man after God’s own heart despite his past. Peter prayed and he became the Lord’s chief apostle.

As we pray, it changes our perspective and permits us to view things different-ly in this life through the Lord. As we are led in this new year of Mercy by the Holy Spirit, let each of us find our own reason to turn to prayer and rediscover Jesus. May He continue to bring us hope, joy and love for one another. Men and women, please join us each month on the second Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the church meeting rooms. There are always wonderfully planned pro-grams, reflections, lunch, and time together as a church family. God’s love and blessings in the New Year be upon you and your loved ones, Rosemary Watson President, St. Catherine of Siena Council of Catholic Women

SORPRESAS

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
