EASTER SUNDAY / DOMINGO DE PASCUA

From the Desk of Fr. Mark Arnzen, Pastor…

The parish staff of St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish and I wish you a blessed and holy Easter Sunday. During this day of great joy we come together to sing glory to our God who is Risen and who through his pas-sion and death has saved us. Your presence at our Easter liturgies is a sign of your desire to know the Risen Lord and to grow in the wonderful and generous grace that God sends upon his children.

Jesus’ invitation to you today is to walk with him in your journey of faith. It is a wonderful and blessed journey that brings true joy to the soul. It is also a difficult journey where we confront the things that destroy the unity of love we share with God and our families.

EASTER SUNDAY

FROM THE DESK OF FR. MARK CONTINUED......

We are invited to spend time with our Lord daily through prayer and in service of our brothers and sisters. In this, as Catholic Christians, we are called to join together in worship and praise in the celebration of the Mass again and again throughout the year. Please come and join us. Like the first disciples and the millions that have followed the way of Jesus, the way of the cross that leads to true life, we hear the gentle voice of our Savior whisper “peace” in our encounter with the Risen Lord. It is an invitation into the holy moment of blessing where our hearts are filled with the very presence of God’s Holy Spirit. In this invitation we must be present and choose to live our Christian faith in the fullness of life. My invitation to you is to renew your life in Christ in the celebration of the Sacraments. Our doors are open for you as God invites you into his holy presence. If you have any questions or we can help you in any way, please do not be afraid to call or stop by the parish office. As St. Paul writes in our second reading this Easter morning, “When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.” (Col 3:4) Happy Easter, Fr. Mark

Welcome! Our warmest welcome to all who celebrate with us, whether long-time residents or newly arrived in the parish. We thank God for you. If you are not registered, please fill out this form and place it in the collection basket or mail it to the parish office.

Email us at [email protected], drop us a note in the Sunday collection or call us at (408) 779-3959. We need your complete name, old & new ad-dress and your new telephone number if that has changed. Don’t miss out on all the great news we mail/email to our parishioners!

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick

Today’s readings are filled with the incredible joy of Jesus’ resurrection. With the benefit of hindsight we assume that the disciples would have known what that empty tomb meant. But it would take until the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost for them to fully take in what Jesus’ resurrection meant… salvation for the world. We hear that the disciple with Peter (probably John) went into the tomb and “saw and believed.” It’s not explicit what that belief actually entailed but the next verse explains that “they did not understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” It’s usual to give the disciples the benefit of the doubt as we know they were living the experience as it happened. In the midst of our Easter joy might we reflect on our belief? Our experience of Jesus is enriched by our knowledge of scripture and the teachings of the Church. But all the same, if those present as the events unfolded could not fully take in the entirety of Jesus saving act, then how can we? Ultimately our belief depends upon our faith, which is a gift from God. Lacking the surety of physical witness, we take heart in seeing Jesus’ earliest disciple as they come slowly to understand the enormity of God’s gift in Jesus. We may not have the words to express our belief as well as we’d like but we have the love in our hearts to express belief by living our faith in our actions. Easter gives us the opportunity to recharge our sometimes lagging spirits… so we can be current day apostles who know that “He is truly risen!” and share that certainty with others.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Spring has sprung :-) it’s a good time to check the closets and give clothing to charity. Not just clothes we don’t wear, try giving away a favor-ite.

EASTER PEOPLE We are Easter people and Alleluia is our song!

EASTER SUNDAY

Lent and Easter are wonderful times of Celebration and Welcoming!

In addition to the very special meaning of the

liturgical celebrations, we are always happy to

see so many parishioners whose schedules

may not allow them to attend Mass at our par-

ish on a regular basis. If you are one of those

who cannot visit our parish as much as you

would like, you might check out our website at

www.stca.org There you will find Holy Week

liturgical schedule, mass times, weekly bul-

letin and our calendar with all our parish

activities. We have exciting faith formation for

adults and family events being planned and

would love to have you in attendance. Check

back often for more great information.

You will also find an Online Giving link. Par-

ish Pay is located on our websites front page.

Our online giving program allows parishioners

to continue to support the parish even when

out-of-town, too busy to remember their enve-

lope, working weekends, or attending Mass at

another parish. If you would like to learn more

about this easy, safe and secure way of giving,

please contact Anna Quinones at aqui-

[email protected] or follow the simple instruc-

tions found on the website.

LITURGY WORSHIP EASTER : Easter Sun-day is the first of the great fifty days of the Easter Season lasting until Pentecost. Easter is in particular the “day which the Lord has made” (Ps. 118:24) we wish every day would be such a day. At least eve-ry Sunday is Easter in miniature. Christ is risen and appeared to his own, enkindling in them and through them in us the belief in his resurrection (Acts 10:34, 37-43; Jn. 20:1-9). Consequently we rejoice and are glad. Christ, risen and glorified, is in our midst, calling us to share his new life, the resurrection life (Col. 3:1-4) .

HAPPY EASTER TO EVERYONE! We, both Parish and School Staff, wish you and your families all the joy, peace and grace of the Risen Christ. What a won-derful grace we have from our Lord Jesus Christ, who gives us the Easter gift of Eternal Life. Let us thank him by giving our

lives to him and the Church as we involve our-selves in different ministries or activities at St. Catherine parish. We are grateful for your presence and participation in the celebration here at St. Catherine parish, whether you attend weekly or ‘now and then’ or just at the major feasts of Christmas and Easter. We hope you know you are always unconditionally wel-come at St. Catherine. If you have any questions or if you have been estranged from the Church for whatever reason, please let the parish staff be of assistance to you. We pray that the Easter Season may continue to be a source of grace and blessing for all your con-tinued support, prayers and sacrifices for St. Cath-erine Parish where the Risen Christ embraces all!

Hoy he sido bautizado; hoy he vuelto a nacer.

EASTER SUNDAY

Adult Baptism, Confirmation, and first Holy Communion

at St Catherine Church

You may want to check out some information in the privacy of your home. Take a look at the website: http://www.catholicscomehome.org/.

If you were baptized a Catholic but are not regularly attend-ing Mass, or maybe you left the practice of your Catholic faith for a particular reason, then this website has information to help you consider a journey home to the Church. There is also information on Church teachings.

“Christ is calling you home, but the choice is ultimately yours. We’ve missed you and we’re glad you are here. “

Do you want to come back to the life of the Church? Welcome home. Alleluia!

This familiar word celebrates especially Jesus Christ — risen from the dead. Are you a Catholic who has been away from the sacraments? Consequently, do you feel dead to the Church? We are your family and would like to welcome you home. We want to bring you back into the life of the Church. Perhaps there is some obstacle that has stopped you from a regular practice of your Catholic faith. Here are a couple of possible obstacles. My Marriage. "I remarried after a divorce. So I can’t be Catholic any longer." You remain a Catholic in the Church’s eyes. And I would like to help you come back to the sacraments. Your di-vorced marriage may have lacked some essential ele-ment and therefore can have a Church annulment — with-out judging the morality of your former marriage or making any children illegitimate. The Bible "I think the Judeo-Christian Scriptures are full of myths and are not reasonable.” Reading ancient texts requires skill. Anything written re-quires interpretation. We think that the Bible should be read in the context of its original language, culture, etc.

We don't consider the Bible to be flawless in matters of science and history. We believe that the Bi-ble's purpose is to reveal the truth that God cares for us and wants to save us from sin and ever-lasting death. If you would like to talk about marriage, the Bible, or any other topic related to the Catholic faith, please contact me. I promise not to be blind to any hurt the Church caused. EASTER SUNDAY

Y O U N G

A D U L T

Y O U T H

SPRING BREAK I know, I know. I was the same way once (and by once I mean most of my life). I was less con-cerned about Easter Sunday (much less the Triduum), and way more concerned with Spring Break. More importantly, that there was no school. If that’s not a reason to celebrate, I don’t know what is. And I’m not just talking about the students—teachers are just as excit-ed about having some time off, if not more so (seriously kids, it’s true). And why shouldn’t they be? Yes, they love to teach. And yes, they love their students (probably at least half of them). But it is work, and almost all of us look forward to a little break from work. Blah blah blah Deepu, what’re we doing for Spring Break? Oh, right, that. Sorry. Well, Marvel’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is coming out in May. What better way to pre-pare for that than to watch ALL the Marvel mov-ies that lead up to it?! That means Iron Man 1-3, Thor 1-2, Captain America 1-2, and The Avengers (of course in chronological order, and no, no Hulk). That’s 8 2+ hour movies… SO, Tuesday, starting at 4pm, we’ll pretty much run through all of them one after the other. Which means we’ll be done around 10am. You don’t have to stay through the night, and you can fall asleep if you want. But it is happening. And if that’s not enough, we will most likely do a day at the Boardwalk (it’s 3 weeks out from when I write this, so I need to figure out de-tails...but rest assured it will be online and on our social media (facebook.com/stcatherineym and @stcatherineym on Twitter).

[email protected]

There are millions of ways to write those words. It is said in many of the languages around the world. It is spoken in all kinds of different ways and settings. But we need to remember what it means—because it means one thing and one thing only: That Jesus Christ has risen from the dead, and in doing so conquered death and brought us to eternal life with Him. So when you’re out today and you say to peo-ple, “Happy Easter,” don’t let it mean, “Hope you have a nice day on this holiday.” Don’t let it mean, “Enjoy the egg hunt,” or “enjoy the choco-late and candies.” Don’t even let it mean, “That’s a nice pastel colored outfit.” Let it mean, “Thank You Lord, for saving me from my sin. Thank You, for dying and rising so that we may have eternal life in You.” Happy Easter.

EASTER SUNDAY

Companions In Faith

Family Faith Formation at St. Catherine’s Church

Imagine how it was to wake up on the first Easter morning, go down to Jesus’ tomb, only to find that the stone had been rolled away. If you had been one of the first disciples to ar-

rive at Jesus' tomb and find that his body was no longer there, what would you think?

What did Mary Magdalene, Simon Peter, and the disciple whom Jesus loved think had hap-pened?

All of them thought that someone had taken Jesus’ body. It didn’t even dawn on them nor did they understand that Jesus had been raised from the dead. During the 40 days of Lent we prepared ourselves to remember Jesus' life, death and Resurrection. We celebrate the Easter Season not only this Sun-day but for 50 days! We celebrate that Jesus’ res-urrection has made it possible for us to share eter-nal life with him. Jesus overcame sin and death. The Resurrection teaches us that our death, like Jesus’ death, will not be the end. There is hope for the future, as nothing can separate us from the greatest gift of all—the love of God in Christ Jesus. That is the good news we celebrate as disciples of Jesus! FAMILY PRAYER: Pray together using today's psalm, Psalm 118: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.” Adapted from “The Easter Season”, Pflaum Publishing Group, http://pflaum.com/pdfs_3_15/feasts_easter.pdf, March 19, 2015.

EASTER SUNDAY

St. Catherine School News

Fifth graders hosted face painting for Mission Carnival. The event is primarily student driven as one of the many ways the school combines giving

service and having fun.

Mission Carnival activities included games, food and mini-raffles. Above students enjoyed the sack

races. There were lots of smiles while students raised money for Fr. Paul’s Awaso School and the

Learning and Loving Center.

The school office will be closed for Easter Break April 3-10.

Classes resume Mon., April 13.

Congratulations to all those

parishioners who were baptized or fully

welcomed in the Church on Holy Saturday!

May the blessings of our Risen Savior fill your lives each day. You are in our

prayers.

LENDING LIBRARY FOR PARENTS AND PARISHIONERS

A small lending library of faith based and spiritu-al books is now available in the school lobby. If you are looking for special information about our Catholic faith or a book to inspire you to seek a closer relationship with Jesus, stop by and check out the selection.

Just take the book with you and return it when you finish. After you finish a book, you are en-couraged (certainly not required) to jot a few notes about its impact on the sheet in the front cover. If you have books about our faith and developing a relationship with Christ that you would like to share with others, you can drop them off at the school office. We’ll put them on our list, include a note sheets and get them on the shelf.

Happy Reading!

HAPPY EASTER!

Three fifth graders, just before leaving for Science Camp at the Marin Headlands. The students enjoy

three days and two nights at camp. They learn about various animal habitats, sea life, the water

cycle and astronomy. The students are accompanied by their teacher, Mrs. Hannon, and parent chaperones. They always return happy

and tired.
