St. Bruno Parish is a mul -cultural community, founded in 1912, that welcomes everyone to worship God, especially through the Holy Eucharist and Perpetual Adora on, to grow in the faith and to serve the less fortunate in order to be light and truth for others.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK El Festival

El festival comenzó con la Cena de Agradecimiento para los volun‐tarios el viernes 4 de octubre. La sala fue decorada y decorada por los Lataki con globos y cortinas. Hubo una buena asistencia aunque noté que había varios asientos vacantes. Todos los premiados se lo merecían: Liturgia: María Monroy; Educación religiosa ‐ Berna‐dette y Mike Osborne; Servicio ‐ Guillermo Quant; Mayordomía ‐ Liliena Otuhiva; Juventud ‐ Catalina Girón; Adulto joven ‐ Sini Le‐hauli; Logro de por vida ‐ Silvia Rivas; Premio Especial ‐ P. Ted Shipp, y; Reconocimiento especial a Amusia Fakakovi, Jone Qali‐kaono y Lloyd Consolacion. Estos galardonados ejemplifican el dicho de San Bruno sobre la alegría en el servicio. ¿Dónde estaría nuestra parroquia sin voluntarios? ¡En ninguna parte! Gracias a Kacey Carey por coordinar el programa; Rosa Willi por coordinar la configuración física y la cena, Pai Lautaimi por organizar y organi‐zar el evento. Como siempre, estamos agradecidos con el Chef Juan Soriano y su asistente Randy Cayabyab por una excelente cena. La bendición de los animales, en honor a San Francisco, se realizó al día siguiente. Vinieron las mascotas habituales y sus dueños. Había perros, periquitos y conejillos de indias, pero esta vez no había gato. Una característica especial de nuestra celebración este año fue la bendición de los paneles solares instalados en el techo del salón par‐roquial. Pensé que no lo haría, pero el Diácono Ramón de la Rosa se puso un casco, se subió al techo y roció agua bendita sobre los 71 paneles. Según Omar Capulong, del Sr. Roofing, la compañía que hizo el trabajo, el proyecto reduciría nuestro uso de electricidad en un 80% y eliminaría 17.4 toneladas métricas de dióxido de carbono de la atmósfera. ¡Excelente! Pero, ¿cómo te imaginas una tonelada métrica de CO2? Imagine un globo con un diámetro de 10 yardas. Llénalo con CO2. Esa es una tonelada métrica de dióxido de carbono. Si tiene 17.4 de tal globo colocado de extremo a extremo, correría aproximadamente la mitad de la longitud de un campo de fútbol o más de su ancho. The Festival

The festival started with the Appreciation Dinner for volunteers on Friday, October 4. The hall was grandly decorated and set up by the Lataki with balloons and draperies. There was a good at‐tendance though I notice that there were several vacant seats. The awardees were all deserving: Liturgy – Maria Monroy; Reli‐gious Education – Bernadette and Mike Osborne; Service – Guillermo Quant; Stewardship – Liliena Otuhiva; Youth – Cat‐alina Giron; Young Adult – Sini Lehauli; Lifetime Achievement – Silvia Rivas; Special Award – Fr. Ted Shipp, and; Special Recognition to Amusia Fakakovi, Jone Qalikaono and Lloyd Consolacion. These honorees exemplify the saying of St. Bruno about cheerfulness in serving. Where would our parish be with‐out volunteers? Nowhere! Thanks to Kacey Carey for coordinat‐ing the program; Rosa Willis for coordinating the physical setup and dinner, Pai Lautaimi for managing and staging the event. As always, we are grateful to Chef Juan Soriano and his assistant Randy Cayabyab for an excellent dinner. The blessing of animals, in honor of St. Francis, was done the following day. The usual pets and their owners came by. There were dogs, parakeet and guinea pig but there was no cat this time. A special feature of our celebration this year was the blessing of the solar panels installed on the roof the parish hall. I thought he wouldn’t do it but Deacon Ramon de la Rosa put on a hardhat, climbed the roof and sprinkled holy water on the 71 panels. Ac‐cording to Omar Capulong of Mr. Roofing, the company that did the job, the project would reduce our electric usage by 80% and take off 17.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Great! But how do you picture a metric ton of CO2? Imagine a balloon with a 10‐yard diameter. Fill it up with CO2. That’s one metric ton of carbon dioxide. If you have 17.4 of such a balloon placed end to end it would run roughly half the length of a foot‐ball field or more than its width. That reduction of carbon footprint by the solar panels is certainly impressive. However, it represents the usage of just one person. The United States average per capita CO2 emission is 15.7; that of the world is 4.9. We are three times above the world average. We need to try harder in this fight against global warming. Members of the ongoing Synod for the Amazon in Rome said that an “ecological conversion” is necessary to ensure that Christians understand the “gravity of sin against the environment as a sin against God, against one’s neighbor and against future genera‐tions.” They challenge us not be spectators, like looking at a screen, but to get involved. Back to the festival. I love the participation and attendance of the Show. The trusses and tarps were the results of love and labor of Francisco Esquivel and others whose names are al‐ready mentioned elsewhere in this article. The Aztec Dance and the Tongan cultural dances by the Lataki, aside from be‐ing grand performances are a timely reminder for the protec‐tion of the indigenous people and their culture all over the world. HEALING AND SALVATION The readings today speak of healing and salvation. In Sec-ond Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a proph-et from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, after a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, “Your faith has saved you.” The psalm and Timothy remind us that salvation involves justice, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. SANACIÓN Y SALVACIÓN Las lecturas de hoy hablan de curación y salvación. El Segundo rey , Naamán, un comandante del ejército del rey de Siria, desarrolla lepra. Acude a un extraño, un profeta de Israel, cuando nadie más puede curar su enfermedad. Para su sorpresa, después de un simple baño en el río, está curado. En el Evangelio de Lucas, Jesús cura a diez lep-rosos y los envía al sacerdote. Solo uno, un samaritano, regresa para agradecer a Jesús por su cura y solo él escu-cha las palabras: “Tu fe te ha salvado”. El salmo y Timo-teo nos recuerdan que la salvación implica justicia, ama-bilidad y fidelidad y nos vincula para siempre con Jesús. ¿Cuántos de nosotros tenemos una ac tud de gra tud, tanto en los buenos empos como en los malos? Nuestro Catecismo dice que la gra tud es amor que ha sido reco-nocido. Alguien que está agradecido se vuelve libremente al dador del bien y entabla una relación nueva y más pro-funda con él. Dios desea que reconozcamos su amor e incluso ahora que vivamos toda nuestra vida en relación con él. Esta relación dura para siempre. Esta gra tud es-tablece una relación de amor, respeto, responsabilidad y obediencia de por vida, entendida correctamente. Nin-gún amigo de buen empo es Dios. Sin embargo, somos todo lo contrario, le damos gracias a Dios cuando las co-sas van a nuestra manera, y si no lo hacen, lo ignoramos. Le pedimos a Dios que haga las cosas a nuestra manera. En el dolor, oramos para que Dios actúe, pero que él ac-túe de la manera que queremos. Nos establecemos como Dios cuando le decimos que haga las cosas a nuestra ma-nera, que se adapte a nuestras ideas. No somos personas enfermas que le pedimos al médico que nos cure, sino personas enfermas que le dicen al médico cómo curar-nos. Cualquiera que trate a Dios de esta manera no ene derecho a su ayuda. Si solo queremos agua pura y limpia, ¿qué diferencia hay si está en una copa dorada o en un vaso de papel? Si nos sucede, Dios lo permite para nues-tro propio bien. How many of us have an a tude of gra tude, in good mes and in bad? Our Catechism says gra -tude is love that has been acknowledged. Someone who is grateful turns freely to the giver of the good and enters into a new, deeper rela onship with him. God wishes us to acknowledge his love and even now to live our whole life in rela on with him, This rela onship lasts forever. This gra tude estab-lishes a lifelong rela onship of love, respect, re-sponsibility, and obedience, rightly understood. No fair weather friend is God. We however are the op-posite, we thank God when things go our way, and if they do not, we ignore him. We ask for God to do things our way. In pain, we pray for God to act, but that he act in the way we want. We set ourselves up as God when we tell him to do things our way, to adapt to our ideas. We are not sick people who ask the doctor to cure us, but rather sick people who tell the doctor how to cure us. Anyone who treats God in this fashion has no right to his help. If we only want pure clean water, what difference does it make if it is in a golden goblet or a paper cup? If it happens to us , God allows it for our own good. We need to thank him for everything, good and bad.
