MEAT FARE SUNDAY
Matthew 25:31-46
From Father Walter
A true shepherd watches over his flock,
protects it and gives it rest; the shepherd
rescues the strays, bandages the wounded
and strengthens the weak (Ezekiel 34:14-16). Jesus is the Good
Shepherd (John 10:11) who came to save and give rest to all
people, to search out the lost, to care for the wounded and weak.
He is loving, constantly providing for our needs whether or not we
have believed in him and obeyed his teaching (John 12:44-50), a
teaching which includes the commandment to love one another
as God has loved us (John 15:12).
Matthew's description of Jesus' final judgement on the basis of
love can be understood in several ways: One tradition sees the
people we are to love as fellow Christians while a second tradition
centers on all of humanity, including those who do not know
Jesus. Both understandings give us a glimpse into the mind of
Christ.
According to the first tradition, followers of Christ will be judged on
whether or not we have loved those who believe in Christ. As we
love them, we love Christ (Matthew 25:40). Jesus' words ring
clear: "Just as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,
you did it to me (Matthew 25:40).The disciples are Jesus' brothers
(Matthew 12:49) and messengers sent out to teach in his name
(Matthew 10:40-42). Loving these - who are, in fact, Christ's
ambassadors - includes receiving their word and teaching.
The second tradition believes that we will be judged on whether
or not we have loved all people, whether or not they are Jesus'

followers. All men and women are children of God, created in his image and likeness;
therefore, we must respect and honor them and treat them lovingly (Matthew 7:12).
What is the quality of our love? Do we love others, including those far from Christ, in the
power of the abundant grace flowing from God? Do we love our leaders and receive their
teaching? Do we love our fellow believers in the household of God (Ephesians 2:19) -
especially the members of our families? Do we reach out to those whom we can care for and
help?
As we love one another in practical and concrete ways, we can look forward without fear to
our own final judgment, for Jesus our King will not find our love wanting.
MEAT FARE SUNDAY
In the Early Church, no meat was eaten after this Sunday until Easter Sunday. The full name for this Sunday was “Farewell to Meat’ and was shortened to “Meat Fare”.
Since we know the Lord’s commandments, let us live accordingly: Let us give the hungry
food, the thirsty drink; let us clothe the naked, welcome strangers to our homes, visit those in prison and the sick; so that he who will judge the whole earth will say even to us: “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you.” (Vespers
Stichera)
LAST JUDGMENT
In Ancient Palestine, shepherds would separate the sheep from the goats when
travelling from one pasture to another. Sheep and goats could feed together but could not travel together.
What prevents me from recognizing Jesus in people who are naked, hungry, thirsty, ill, imprisoned or lonely?
KONDAK (Tone 3)
O God, when You come to earth in all Your glory, * when all things will tremble, when the river of fire will flow before Your judgment seat, * when the books will be opened and when what is secret will be revealed; * then save me from the unquenchable fire, * and grant that I may stand at Your right hand, most just Judge.
Our love for God must be active. We need to recognize Jesus in the men and women we meet – even those with whom we would never associate. Giving alms and doing good to others is a huge part of the Christian life, but it is often assigned to the seasons of Great Lent or Phillipian Fast.
January 31, 2016
Many saints have had the experience of meeting Jesus in the least likely of places. St.
Francis of Assisi was terrified of lepers. After his conversion, he forced himself to go to the leper Colony and wash their wounds. As he did so, the leper became Christ and St. Francis realized that Jesus resides in the least likely of human beings. Where is Jesus hiding in my family, school, neighbourhood, Church? What does Jesus need from me?
WHAT CAN I DO IN MY CLASSROOM OR HOME?
Go through your closets and give clothes to the poor.
Have a bottle drive and give the money to the local food bank.
Put a sign on your mirror that says: Jesus lives in me!
Put a sign on your door that says: Jesus lives in others!
Pray for people who are lonely and sick, remember them as a family, class or individually.
Put chocolate in the food hampers at Church, not just food you dislike.
Try to spend a whole day thinking about others first.
At the end of each evening, class, week ask yourself if you helped anyone who was in need.
Where did you meet Jesus today?
”All men and women are created in the image and likeness of God, and Christ, the perfect image of
God, dwells in all of us. We find Christ in our neighbour, and not least in our neighbour who is in any
kind of need. If Lent is a time when the thought of judgment should spur us to repentance, then
authentic repentance leads us to put love into practice in our daily living and in all our
relationships”.
THE NEED FOR CHILD-LIKE FAITH
Most of us worry unnecessarily about too many things.
It’s almost as though we search for problems to give ourselves
stress. The amazing news is that much of what we worry
about doesn’t matter at all! Take a look at these statistics
about worry:
40% of all things that we worry
about never come to pass.
30% of all our worries involve past
decisions that cannot be changed.
12% focus on criticism from others
who spoke because they felt inferior.
10% are related to our health, which gets worse when we worry.
8% of our worries could be described as "legitimate" causes for concern.
Isn’t that remarkable? Fewer than one "problem" in every ten that we worry about is a real
concern. All the others are things that we can learn to see differently or eliminate.
January 31, 2016
God does not wish for us to spend our days worrying. Not about the
future, not about money or need. He will provide for all those who have
trust and believe in Him. Worry has been defined as “a small trickle of
fear that meanders through the mind until it cuts a channel into which all
other thoughts are drained.
Here are 7 reasons why you should not worry.
1-The same God who created life in you can be trusted
with the details of that life.
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what
you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will
wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body
more important than clothes?” Matthew 6:25
We are the most valuable of all God’s creatures. In all
that we face in this world we can trust God – even in the
bad times. But we must make the choice to let go of our worries and trust Him.
2-Worrying about the future hampers your efforts
today.
“ Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap
or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father
feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than
they?” Matthew 6:26
3-Worrying is more harmful that helpful.
“ Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his
life?” Matthew 6:27
Death was walking
toward a city, and a
man stopped Death
and asked “what are
you going to do?”
“I’m going to kill
10,000 people today”
Death said. The man
ran ahead to the city. He warned everybody he passed that
Death was coming and what he was going to do. At the end
of the day, he again met Death. He said “you said you were
only going to kill 10,000 people and now 70,000 are dead” Death said “I killed only 10,000.
Worry and fear killed the others”.
January 31, 2016
4-God does not ignore those who depend on him.
"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor
or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown
into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Matthew 6:28-30
We may worry about things but we have a lot to be thankful for to God.
If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your
back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep, you are
richer than 75% of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and
spare change in a dish someplace, you are among
the top 8% of the worlds wealthy.
If you woke up this morning with more health than
illness, you are more blessed than the million who
will not survive this week
If you have never experienced the danger of battle,
the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are
ahead of 500 million people in the world.
If you can attend church meetings without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you
are more blessed than three billion in the world.
And if your parents are still alive and still married, you are very rare.
5-Worrying shows a lack of faith and understanding of God.
“ So do not worry, saying, `What shall we eat?’ or `What
shall we drink?’ or `What shall we wear?’ For the pagans
run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows
that you need them.” Matthew 6:31-32
When it comes to faith conquering our worrying, we need to
have a child-like faith.
A child does not worry all day long whether his house will be
there when he gets home from school, or whether his
parents will have made dinner. In the same way, Christians
should trust God to supply what is best for us.
6-Worrying keeps you from focusing on what God wants you to pursue.
“ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you
as well.” Matthew 6:33
January 31, 2016
If we are taking care of God’s business
as a priority—seeking His salvation,
living in obedience to Him, and sharing
the good news of the kingdom with
others—then He will take care of our
business as He promised—and if that’s
the arrangement, why worry? But how
do we know if we’re truly seeking God’s kingdom first? There are questions we can ask
ourselves. “Where do I primarily spend my energies? Is all my time and money spent on
goods and activities that will certainly perish, or in the services of God—the results of which
live on for eternity?” Believers who have learned to truly put God first may then rest in this
holy dynamic: “…and all these things will be given to you as well.”
7-Living one day at a time keeps us from being
consumed with worry.
“ Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has
enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34
It does no good to worry about tomorrow. We may
not have a tomorrow. If you are worrying about the
problems of tomorrow, you will miss out on the
blessings of today.

A Sanctuary Light burns eternally to indicate the presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist in the Tabernacle. It is a marvelous thing that we can actually be in His presence!
"Holiness is a disposition of the heart that makes us humble and little in the arms of God, aware
of our weakness, and confident -- in the most audacious way -- in His Fatherly goodness."
- St. Therese of the Infant Jesus

THE TRAVELING ICON OF THE MOTHER OF POCHAIV
You can arrange to have the icon in your home by using the sign-up sheet at the back of the church. Just write your name on the week in the calendar that corresponds to your choice of time period.
When we speak of icons as a medium for “gazing into heaven”, we refer to their value as much more than ethereal-looking religious art. Instead, icons serve as a very real means for connecting us with God and His love. Icons are beautiful, but without relationship behind it, beauty alone feeds only a portion of the human soul, and ultimately patronizes the deep human need for loving connection with the Transcendent. With this in mind, we seek to view icons as points of visual and spiritual intersection with eternal things, as living prompts for our prayers, and as reminders of the very real world that exists beyond the limitations of this temporal one. Icons can seem complicated or strange at first. Take time to come present to the icon, to simply gaze, allowing both your sense of sight as well as the longings of your heart to interact with what the icon presents to you in a particular moment. Icons have a way of teaching the heart spiritual truths the mind cannot. This is part of what is meant by icons being “theology in color.
While the Icon is in your home pray before it, alone or with others, for all your intentions and needs. You may pray the Rosary, in whole or in part, or the prayers from the Moleben to the Mother of God, or pray in your own words; or simply spend some silent moments in meditation, listening and being attentive to God's Word.
In your prayers, approach the Blessed Mother with childlike confidence and bring her all your concerns, worries, disappointments, hurts and sufferings, and all your needs, wishes and hopes. But also say a prayer of thanksgiving for all of your successes and joys, your graces and blessings, known and unknown. Make the most of the presence of Mary's Icon in your home.
