News Around Saint Bruno . . . .

“Summertime and the living is easy.” That’s what the

favorite old song says. The living may be easy, but often the giving is not. Summer collections often drop signifi-cantly in our parish because of vacation travel, sports schedules and other activities that cause parishioners to attend Mass in other parishes. If you would like to make your giving easy and consistent this summer, please con-sider our electronic giving option. Currently 16 parish families are using this simple and secure way to make and track their parish giving. If you would like to learn more, please contact Amy at the Parish Office, 724-836-0690.

Interested in sharing your faith this Fall with fellow pa-

rishioners here at Saint Bruno? We would like to start a gathering to discuss our faith, the bible and how we can help our world today. Anyone interested in helping to start this ministry please contact Amy at the Parish Office, 724-836-0690.

Grief Recovery program will be offered at Saint

Bruno's beginning in mid-September. Day and time will be planned to best suit the participants. Grief Recovery is an eight-week program that meets weekly for about 1 ½ hours. It helps grievers work through their own situation of grief and recover a capacity for happiness. Grief is a normal and natural response to any significant loss. Alt-hough loss of a loved one through death is the reason many participate in Grief Recovery, the program is effec-tive for any kind of loss. To inquire or register, contact the parish office, or Sister Edie at 724-547-1911 or you may email her at [email protected].

LITURGICAL ROLES

THIS WEEK

The Lord’s Laughter

“A joyful heart is a good medicine, but a broken

spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

A tourist was fishing off the coast of Florida when his boat tipped

over. He could swim, but he was afraid of alligators and hung on to

the side of the overturned boat. Spotting an old woman standing on

the shore, the tourist shouted out, “Are there any ’gators around

here?” “Naw,” the woman hollered back. “They haven’t been around

here for years!” Feeling safe, the tourist started swimming calmly to-

ward the shore. About halfway there, he asked the woman, “How’d

you get rid of the ’gators?” “We didn’t do anything,” said the woman.

“The sharks got ’em.”

WEEKLY MASS SCHEDULE

"Peter got out of the boat

and began to walk on the

water toward Jesus. But

when he saw how strong the

wind was, he became fright-

ened." How can we describe

Peter? At once faithful and

fearful, his jumbled respons-

es remind us that he was no

spiritual superman, well intentioned though he may

have been. Peter wanted to believe, and in fact showed a

great deal of confidence in Christ, but the temptation to

doubt was strong enough to knock him off his feet, liter-

ally.

"O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" Jesus repri-

manded Peter. The words seem harsh. After all, Peter

was the only one who had enough faith to even try some-

thing as ludicrous as stepping out of the boat onto the

water in the first place. But perhaps Jesus wanted to

emphasize that our faith needs to be strong enough to

weather the storm, so to speak.

If we only believe in Jesus when the wind is calm and

the waves are gone, is that truly having faith in him? Is

that actually trusting in his supreme power over the

forces of the universe? Peter began to sink as soon as a

challenge appeared. Jesus called him, and he calls us, to

stay on our feet even when the winds begin to blow.

So, what are the winds that threaten our faith? What

kinds of gusts are blowing today? Whatever it might be--

health problems, financial concerns, relational struggles

--none of it is too much for Jesus to handle. But we must

step out in faith and trust him! And we need to keep our

eyes on him as we do so, instead of getting distracted by

the force of the challenges we face. Jesus is bigger than

any problem. We have nothing to fear as long as we are

walking towards him.
