passed ECDL, employers know you have the skills to carry out the main tasks on a computer. The ECDL is the first qualification in personal computing skills to be recognised throughout the European Union and is a great qualification to have on your CV. You might do an ECDL if you want a basic qualification in computing to enhance your career prospects and to improve your skills. Whilst many young people have the necessary computer skills to transfer into the work place, having a recog-nised and respected qualification such as the ECDL will prove your competency and will most definitely give you a head start on other job applicants. An example of this is the National Health Service who use the ECDL as the benchmark IT qualification and as such it is available without charge to all staff.Below are a selection of actual job advertisements where ECDL is stated as a requirement:Learning Support Assistant (14 -16 Unit) Wakefield College - Wakefield£5,364 - £5,670 a monthLevel 2 qualification in Word Processing / ECDL / CLAIT or equivalent qualification and/or equivalent experience, or a willingness to study.Medacs Assessor (Mon-Fri 9 til 5) Nurses Medacs Healthcare - Gateshead£32,000 a yearTo have completed ECDL or equivalent is desirable. .Ability to travel to a range of locations as the business requires. CATHOLICITY OF THE SCHOOLTHE POPE’S TWITTER FEED21st April 2016: “Climate change represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity today, and the response requires the solidary of all.”Do you always show respect and concern for our environment in school, at home and when you are out?SAINT GEORGE’S DAY: SATURDAY 23RD APRILTomorrow is Saint George’s Day, the patron saint of England, and we pray for all English people. It is also the day on which William Shakespeare was born in 1564. He died on his birthday in 1616.Let us pray…Lord, Give us the bravery of St George to stand up for the truth and the glory of God that we have seen in the face of Jesus Christ. Give us the strength to overcome in our lives and in the world, all that is contrary to your rule of justice and love. Help us to be good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; let the oppressed go free, and proclaim the good news..Amen.

Information about the Saint is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/christianity/saints/george_1.shtmlJUBILEE FOR TEENAGERSDuring his penitential service last March 13, Pope Francis officially announced December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016 as the jubilee year of Mercy. It will be a year of celebration and hope especially for the poor, oppressed, the blind and sick, and also to renew enthusiasm in the Catholic Church. One of the many events will be held on April 23 and 24, 2016 – Jubilee for teenag-ers where there will be the celebration for the youth at Rome’s Olympic Stadium. The Pope’s Mass will follow the next day. Also during the weekend, he will celebrate the Jubilee of Adolescents in Rome. On Saturday, the colonnade of St. Peter will be filled with confessionals for young people. The place is strategic, on their way to the holy door. In the evening, a music festival and testimonies will await them at the Olympic Stadium in Rome. And on Sunday they will have a Mass dedicated to them with Pope Francis.

Prayer for TeenagersWith each new day that dawns I am growing up, O Lord. It's not too soon to start thinking of what I want to be.

It's very hard, I think, to make the right decision but I pray that You will help and guide me.

Show me what to do, let me share, someday, my talents where they're needed.

And when you show me, give me courage to be generous enoughto do what You want.

Amen. Mrs O’Connor, Head of Catholic Life

TRIPS AND VISITSSIXTH FORM VISIT TO PRIMROSE HOSPICE On Friday, 15th April 2016, a group of Sixth Form students visited Primrose Hospice to hand over a cheque totalling £600 for funds raised during Lenten Charity activities within Sixth Form.We received a warm welcome from patients, volunteers and staff alike and were given a tour of the hospice’s facilities. As the hospice relies solely on funding from community fundraising, the cheque was gratefully received. All students commented on the relaxed, caring atmosphere of the hospice and said they were surprised by how “unlike a hospital” the facility was. Many thanks to the students for representing themselves and the school impeccably but also to all Sixth Form students for the tremendous amount raised during Lenten Charities activities. We have come away with ideas for future fundraising activities to support the hospice.Hayleigh Bond, Sarah Moonan, Ousmann Mohammad, Millie Wilkes, Georgina Harris, Delwin JoseMrs Gisby and Mrs Collier

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTAT&T EASTER 2016 WORK EXPERIENCE PLACE-MENT (4th – 7th APRIL 2016)Six Year12 students took part in the third annual AT&T Work Experience Programme. Andy O’Malley, AT&T Service Director who co-ordinates the programme, reported that this year’s cohort of students “They were great – I’d say the best we have had. They represented themselves and the school impeccably. They interacted well and we had some great feedback from them.”Upon return to school, students met on Wednesday, 13th April for a debrief session to provide their feedback and thoughts on the experience:On Monday 4th April -Thursday 7th April I have been involved in

Primrose Hospice Visit

the AT&T work experience Aspire programme. This was a very enjoyable and exciting experience for me as I gained an insight into many of the departments at AT&T. We, as a team, had been set a task to produce a 'Response for Proposal' to an external company. Throughout the week we had been presented with different presentations about the different departments in AT&T, from Sales to Product Management and Finance. I have found this work experience very useful as I was able to develop Presentation skills as well as further enhance my Team working skills. I am very pleased with this work experience and would like to thank Andy for being a great host. Kris MozejkoThe week beginning the 4th April 2016, I attended a four-day work experience programme with AT&T. At the start of the week, we were set a task to produce a sales response for a certain company. To build up our knowledge and skills, we visited many departments that help to assist us in our task. By visiting each different department within the organisation, we were able to gain an effective understanding of the different roles each different area had when they had to produce a sales response. I found the week extremely rewarding as it allowed me to engage in skills such as teamwork, communication and presentation skills, and also gain a lot of information about the company itself. One of the most beneficial experiences for me was that each representative we visited took time to ask us about personal career prospects and gave us advice for our futures. Overall I found the week really enjoyable and I have learned vital lessons which I will use for the rest of my career. Many thanks. Greg Campbell In the last week of the Easter holidays, me and five others spent 4 days with AT&T doing work experience. Throughout the four days we had talks from a number of people from different areas in the business which allowed us to get an insight to all aspects of AT&T. We even found out how the internet works!! (Which is more confusing than you’d think). In some talks, we experienced using Telepresence which was interesting for all of us. At the end of the four days we, as a group, had to give a presentation to all those who had given talks to us, based on an RFP given to us at the start of the week. We had around an hour on the last day to put this presentation together based on the notes we had made throughout the week. We managed to pull it off and had positive feedback from our ‘clients’. Overall it was a really good experience and I have come away from it feeling more secure in what I want to do in the future and I’d recommend the opportunity to anyone!! Izzy WaldronThe work experience that I took part in at AT&T during my Easter Holiday has been an incredible opportunity which I am absolutely grateful for being able to participate in. Throughout my time with the company I developed a huge understanding about the different areas of the business, as well as some very fascinating, complicated yet understandable and exiting information including some very technical aspects of the telecommunication services that the firm offers. Also, I received inputs from various different departments of the business, all led by very friendly and interesting people, which all without an exception highly benefited me with greater understandings and perceptions of AT&T’s business environment. Moreover, some of the inputs which I received, especially the one which was based in the astonishing telepresence room with Andy O’Malley, have been simply extraordinary and extremely motivating, making me deeply think about my future. After walking out of that meeting, I encountered a similarly special feeling that you can usually face after walking out of a cinema room, having seen a really amazing film that has truly touched you inside. Furthermore, our programme was controlled and led by Andy O’Malley, who was impressively welcoming and had a brilliant approach towards our group, making the experience even better than it already

was. To conclude, the entire week was thoroughly well prepared and suited towards our group, I am certainly overwhelmed for using the opportunity of taking part and I would be more than happy to keep in touch with AT&T to hopefully one day come into another contact with the firm. Jan Pociecha.I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience at AT&T. Andy, who helped us visit the different places in the building and who organised the whole experience was amazing and friendly. We were given a chance to use the Telepresence room to communicate with a few AT&T employees who were based in different cities and countries. We had a gentleman called Andy O'Malley who talked to us a little bit about who he was and some of the AT&T inventions and achievements over the years. We all learned a great amount of new information from his PowerPoint which has very informative and baffling because he threw some things at us that none of us knew; things like AT&T invented the telephone and the microchip. Also, he inspired some of us to change or at least rethink our plans about our future careers because he made some good points as to why software will be a big part of everything in the future so it makes sense to get a career which involves software. We also had a day at the AT&T office in Moons Moat which was really good because we got a bit more hands on approach to the equipment that AT&T use. We visited the place with all the equipment that provides the internet for their customers. We also had a chance to see how the employees deal with any problems that their customers have and how they take on a more proactive approach. We had discussions with people from many departments who helped us with the task that we were given which was to reply to a “Request For Proposal” from a company. We had to put together all the information that we learned from each different department and put them into a PowerPoint and split up different slides so we could all be a part of this PowerPoint. All the employees at AT&T were really friendly and helpful. On the final day, many of the staff who we had met came to watch our presentation. We were all slightly nervous before presenting, but once we started we were fine. I have learnt a lot from this experience and would like to thank Andy for allowing me to be a part of this. Thank you - Evit Jose100 MILE CHARITY BIKE RIDE - ELLA McAFEEYear 9 student, Ella McAfee is about to embark upon a marathon bicycle ride in aid of the charity Molly Olly’s Wish. CAREER SPOTLIGHT ON........Name: Megan O’SheaOccupation: Technical Aerospace Apprentice EngineerQualifications: 11 GCSE’s (A-C Grade), Btec Level 3 in Engineer-ing, City and Guilds Level 3 in Parametric Modelling. Currently undertaking a Batchelor’s of Manufacturing Engineering. What were you thinking of doing when at school? At school I wanted to be many different things, mostly in STEM careers. But I always knew I wanted to get a job straight after I finished my GCSE’s because most employers will look for experience in your chosen sector when interviewing potential candidates for a job opportunity. This is why I decided to under-take an engineering apprenticeship.Extra-Curricular experience:Engineering club (Year 7 – 9) – Gave me an underpinning knowl-edge and appreciation of engineering.Work Experience (Year 10 and Year 11) – Three weeks at UTC Aerospace Systems in Wolverhampton, gaining an appreciation of the aerospace sector. What does your job involve? My current job role involves exploring various areas of the business and getting to grips with how the business as a whole functions. I have had experience in development sectors, testing and validating parts ready for first flight. I have also had experi-ence in the design sector, creating modifications and updating drawings for parts. What personal qualities are needed? In the engineering sector you are expected to have good commu-nication skills, which is a must for any job or role, as you will be communicating with people from all areas of the business, suppliers and even customers. You must also be hard working and very precise as some tests cost companies thousands of pounds to carry out and a single mistake could be drastic. What do you like about the job the most?I love the fact that every day is different. Dear Parents/Carers

YEAR 9 WELL BEING DAY

As you are aware Saint Augustine’s Catholic High School takes students’ well being very seriously. Year 9

students have recently attended assemblies about mental health and have received information regarding a

well-being app that may support them. In order to promote this in school, we are having a Well Being Day

on Monday 25th April 2016. This will involve an assembly on E-Safety, physical exercise (in the form of

Zumba and Bhangra dancing) as well as workshops from Dove looking at body image and self esteem. We will

also be looking at healthy eating and the art of relaxation too.

Students will need to be in their PE kits for the entire day with registration taking place at the usual time.

Students are reminded that normal behaviour and attendance rules apply throughout the day.

Kindly ensure that students bring their water bottles and snacks to maintain their energy levels.

I look forward to sharing our write ups and photographs from the day in next week’s newsletter.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any queries regarding our Well Being Day.

Many thanks.

Yours sincerely

Ms Mason

Head of Year 9
