Dear Parishioners,
Last Sunday we celebrated the great Feast of Easter.
This feast is the foundation of our Christian faith and
one that demands a great act of faith on our part. We
see how demanding it was in Thomas, one of the
central figures in today’s Scripture readings. His
doubt was removed by the comforting words of
Christ, found in today’s Gospel acclamation. “You
believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me,
says the Lord; blessed are those who have not seen
me, but still believe.” These are certainly words that
give us comfort and strength in our faith.
Today, on this Second Sunday of Easter the liturgy
reflects on two aspects of our faith commitment; the
Resurrection of Christ and Christ’s Divine Mercy, a
feast that was added by Pope St. John Paul II. A
song that we used during Lent “Loving and
Forgiving” finds its way very easily into today’s
Liturgy. This song speaks of Christ’s mercy toward
us but does not stop there. It places on us the
responsibility of sharing that same mercy and love
towards all of humanity.

Pope Francis
Pope Francis’ papacy has been described as intriguing. An example is his increasingly dark view of the human condition at this time in human history.
In several of his daily Mass homilies recently, he referred to a novel written in 1907 by Robert Hugh Benson, Lord of the World, which is an early prototype of Huxley’s Brave New World and Orwell’s 1984. I quote George Weigel on this: “Pope Francis clearly finds in it a compelling critique of a civilization in which tolerance and humanitarianism are only a façade behind which is an ego-driven authoritarianism which eventually turns into a mass persecution of the Church.” Weigel continues: Pope Francis is “someone with a very clear view of the shadow side of our world, and especially of the mendacity rife in contemporary politics.”
Francis also issues a call for Catholicism to become a Church in permanent, energetic mission. This is not just increasing the efficiency of the Roman Curia or of a St. Aloysius Parish. He speaks of an “evangelical efficiency” in which structure serves mission. In other words, everything we do here as parish - CYO basketball and food drives, family catechesis or Trinity drama club, whatever we do as parish should serve the mission of Christ. Word and Sacrament take precedence. The converse is also true. If any activity of any sort does not further the mission of Christ in our parish, it is not “evangelically efficient” and should be ended. Pope Francis has given us a lot to ponder. MJD
************************************* The Lord is risen! As Christ's disciples, we are called to
go forth and spread the good news of His Resurrection.
Our parish's many ministries are examples of how many
of you answer that call. Our ministries require not only

prayerfully consider supporting St. Aloysius Parish with
