WE’LL BE MISSING THE BEAT

Our wonderful drummer, Rich Leavy, who along with Peter Greco and Monroe Quinn (R.P.M.) makes our 12 noon Sunday liturgies so uplifting, will be

missing from our celebrations until June. Sadly, he broke his ankle and will need time to recover. Please keep him in your prayers .

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.” GENESIS 12:1 God calls all of us to leave behind our old ways and to follow Him, placing our complete trust in Him. Some of the old ways that we may have to struggle to leave behind might be materialism, selfishness and greed. Yet God promises to show us a new land and a better way to live.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Thanks to parishioner and sacristan Tom Moran for his suggestion to bring the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal for the moving Lenten Mission they gave us last week. The Friars led us in three beautiful evenings of prayer, song, reflection and renewal as we celebrated God’s love and found his mercy and healing in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

OUR STATIONS OF THE CROSS You may have noticed some changes taking place to the Stations of the Cross plaques that are hung on the walls of our Upper Church. A professional artist is now in the process of repairing, restoring and enhancing their beauty. This project is taking place thanks to your generosity to the “We Are Living Stones” capital campaign. During this process we will continue to hold the devotion EVERY FRIDAY IN LENT (except Good Friday) at 2:00 pm with the schoolchildren and again at 7:30 pm. Please join us.

BECOME A LITURGICAL MINISTER The Liturgical Ministries are an excellent way to fulfill your baptismal call of service to one another while greatly enriching your own faith. Training will be provided. If you would like to learn more about one of our liturgical ministries or would like to volunteer for one, please see any one of our priests or call the parish office at 201-261-0148. You can also contact

a representative of the ministry via email: Readers/Lectors: Betty Kern at [email protected] Ministers of Holy Communion: Phil De Rosa at [email protected] Altar Servers: Dr. Michael Petrella at [email protected] Choir: Monroe Quinn at [email protected] Ushers/Greeters: Tom Moran at [email protected]

The first person I met when I reported to my assignment as a newly ordained priest at Holy Trinity Church in Hackensack was our live-in

cook and housekeeper Nancy O’Shaughnessy, who was out walking the rectory’s Weimaraner. Nancy was a fine cook who truly made our rectory a home. She also had enough personality for three ordinary people. Every summer she would go back to the home she shared with her sister in Limerick, on the suburban side of the River Shannon. At one time, their backyard neighbor was the actor Richard Harris. Nancy had a friend from Washington Township who had a high position with Irish Airlines, with the result that she could bring a basically unlimited amount of luggage with her on her summer flights. This was mostly what she bought to give to her two nephews and their families, which she always took through the nothing-to-declare lane at Irish Customs. One year she brought them articles of patio furniture. I initially thought her nephews were poor, but later found out that one of them owned a nice insurance business and the other was an architect who, besides his regular practice, saved stained glass windows and other artifacts from closed-down chapels and re-purposed them in new settings, including a previously unattractive cinderblock church in a poor area of Limerick. Nancy had a brother who was an IRA participant—not the tax-deferred retirement savings kind, but the other kind. When the parish priests went to his wake, we met the daughter of Eamon De Valera, who also dropped by to pay respects. For its first few years, the Bergen Irish’s St. Patrick’s parade stepped off from the front of Holy Trinity. I’ll

(continued above)

always remember how proud and happy Nancy was over the festivities.. Ireland is small, and so is its population. For all its beauty, it has meager natural resources, except for its people. But in them, and in its faith traditions, it is enormously wealthy. Friday is the feast of its most famous person, St. Patrick (c. 386-c.460). Most probably of Roman lineage (from Britain), he was kidnapped by Irish pirates, made a slave herding swine, escaped to home, trained to become a priest, and eventually returned to Ireland, where he worked long, courageously and successfully for the Faith. He was the first to evangelize Western Europe beyond the boundaries of the Roman Empire.

The great Redemptorist preacher Father Joseph Manton superbly described the debt we owe St. Patrick: What Ireland produces cannot be packed into crates or poured into barrels. It was essentially the spirit that Patrick bequeathed, the deep faith and the warm heart, the witty tongue and the lilting song, and a fierce dedication to freedom. It is Ireland’s contribution to the brave and multicolored mosaic of that grand Catholic image produced by so many different nationalities that together have made the Church in America the magnificent enterprise it is.

May you greatly enjoy your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. And, especially if you are Irish, may they let you show your rightful pride in a great saint. And don’t forget: Cardinal Tobin has dispensed Catholics of the Archdiocese from the usual Friday Lenten obligation of abstaining from meat.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 12, 2017

SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL PRESENTS

“THE DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA” Safety Tips for You and Your Child

as presented by retired FBI special agent Bob Bukowski , RLB Security Consultants

Because our young people are practically growing up on the internet, it is essential that we teach them the skills they will need to safely learn and socialize online. As adults, we too need to find ways to keep our own personal information (and reputations) secure. ALL ARE INVITED to a very special presentation on Tuesday, March 21 at 7:30 pm in the Saint Joseph lower school Gym (305 Elm St., Oradell) that will help you: Learn what to do if you are threatened or scammed online Learn the myths vs. the facts of the internet Protect your child from child predators, sexting,

cyberbullying, recruitment by terrorists or gangs Any questions, see the brochures in our church racks or call 201-261-2388. There is NO COST.

HAVE YOU SHARED GOD’S BLESSINGS?

Saint Joseph’s goal in the annual Sharing God’s Blessings Appeal which helps to fund so many of the Archdiocesan ministries and

programs that provide social, educational and spiritual support to thousands of people each year, is $85,375.00. Please help us reach our goal and make your pledge today. Envelopes are available at the doors of the church or at the rectory/parish office. Simply drop your envelope in the collection basket or at the rectory.

BISHOP ROBERT BARRON’S “CATHOLICISM”

BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY The celebrated series “Catholicism” will be shown this Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 in the Jackson Room (in Mary’s chapel, our lower church). If you are looking for a means of deepening your relationship with Our Lord this Lent, this will offer you a most enjoyable way of doing so. In Episode 1, “Amazed and Afraid: The Revelation of God Become Man,” we journey with Bishop Barron to the mysterious and sacred sites of the Holy Land (from Caesarea, to the Sea of Galilee, and to Jerusalem) and to the eternal city of Rome. Bishop Barron illustrates the Catholic Faith’s conviction that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah and the revelation of God become man in Christ. Robert Barron is an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles who has become widely known as a writer and speaker about the Catholic Faith. He is the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries. One of its notable projects is the series “Catholicism,” which Bishop Barron created and hosts. It makes very enjoyable use of his talents and interests, which include art, architecture, literature, music and history.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY DISPENSATION “I dispense the people of the Archdiocese of Newark from the obligation to abstain from meat on Friday, March 17, 2017. “I remind all Catholics who avail themselves of this dispensation that the Church highly encourages you to substitute some other act of penance, such as special prayer, acts of piety or works of charity on March 17th.”

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss. R.

LENTEN REFLECTION “CARRYING THE CROSS”

LEGION OF MARY THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER

—MARCH 18 Richard Fritzky author of A Pilgrim’s Song: Mary Varick and Her Theology of Suffering, What Must Needs Come: A Legacy of Gettysburg, and Tidings of Great Joy: Keeping Christmas Well will speak in Saint Joseph’s Upper Church on Saturday, March 18 after the 8:30 AM Mass at the Legion of Mary Third Saturday Prayer Service. All are most welcome! Focusing upon the topic of “Carrying the Cross,” he will suggest that affliction and suffering can be the ultimate instruments of joy, transformative grace, and redemption—and that truly living as a Christian requires journeying deep within and giving of oneself without. If you are challenged and struggling with suffering of any kind – be it mental, emotional or physical – or if you are simply interested in going deeper this Lent, please consider coming. You will not be disappointed.
