“Information with added value for your projects”

The system is perfectly attuned to the various requirements of room automa-tion. The modules for air conditioning, lighting and shading can be combined centrally or decentrally with your auto-

Murten. The Light+Building Fair in Frankfurt is the world’s leading trade fair for lighting, building automation technologies and energy management. Smart system solutions are the founda-tion for enhancing the quality of life by reducing at the same time energy con-sumption and environmental footprint. Therefore, the motto of Light+Building 2016 is ‘digital – individual – networked’. These three aspects are the keystones for the creation of ‘modern spaces’ that also contribute to an improved quality of life.

Integrated room automation in citizenM hotels with Saia PCD®

citizenM is a relatively young hotel chain that opened its first hotel in June 2008 at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam. The hotels feature a modern design and high-quality information technology. Together with the system integrator Regel Partners, Saia Burgess Controls (SBC) created an integrated room auto-mation system which can be used to control HVAC applications, lighting, shading and even the TV via a tablet

but also the air conditioning, blinds and TV. Among the technology that enables this simple control is a room box from SBC that is mounted in the ceiling or wall. One smart benefit of this technology is that all control settings for the room that guests make are saved for their next check-in at a citizenM hotel.

computer. Even arriving here is differ-ent. Instead of queueing at reception and having to wait, guests at citizenM hotels can use terminals that allow up to 6 of them at a time to check in and out themselves and enter special re-quirements such as breakfast or late checkout. The rooms feature modern facilities re-volving around a tablet computer. This is used to control not only the lighting

The E-Line controller from SBC – the foundation for cross-discipline communication

We have something in common

Product world. With its large range of interfaces, the freely programmable E-Line controller lays the foundations for cross-discipline communication. In addition to the existing on-board inputs and interfaces, it can be quickly ex-panded using slots. This makes it easy to adapt to a range of applications and also enables flexible use of communica-

This time it’s a shopping centre, next time an office complex, a tunnel or a traffic system, a heating or cooling sys-tem. But whatever it is, it’s your project, your system, your building – and our au-tomation technology. What connects us is a shared success story. And every suc-cess story deserves to be told. We’re giving you the opportunity to do that – as an SBC reference customer.

We offer you a stage for it. On our web-site and via printable downloads of any size – depending on the extent of your project or the complexity of the chal-lenge you had to master. Even videos are possible. We have prepared several packages for you. Ask your SBC account manager about them. He or she will be pleased to assist you in deciding which is best for you.

tion interfaces such as BACnet, LON, KNX, DALI, EnOcean, Modbus, M-Bus etc. The Saia PCD1 E-Line controller facil-itates implementation of energy-effi-cient customised room automation and helps to achieve the energy efficiency grades specified by EN 15232:2012.

Integrated web serverThe IT protocols that have already been implemented enable seamless integra-tion into an existing IT  environment. On-site operation and remote access to the web server are also easy to imple-ment. This, together with the free pro-grammability of the Saia  PG5, guaran-tees sustainable automation throughout the entire life cycle of sys-tems and properties. In combination

with the durability that characterises all SBC prod-ucts, this controller is equipped for all future challenges as all applica-tions can be adapted at any time. The lack of a battery enables efficient servicing and easy main-tenance.

Also suitable as a floor controllerWhen used together with the programmable I/O   modules, the E-Line controller is ideal for controlling floors or zones. In this role, it acts as the master station and interface to the higher control level.

Freely programmable, compact and open in all directions: In the Saia PCD1 E-Line controller, SBC presents a CPU that has been specifically de-signed for use in building automa-tion. Its compact design makes it ideal for installation in electrical sub-distributors.

The SBC reference customer programme

In addition to the existing on-board inputs and interfaces, the controller can be quickly expanded using slots and adjusted simply to a range of applications.

The modules can also be operated in-dependently from the master station in individual rooms.

The challengeTo make sure farmers get practical infor-mation on the performance, fuel con-sumption and emissions of a tractor, load scenarios based on typical work in the field are simulated on a chassis dy-namometer. In the past, test engineers and technicians were reliant on the weather because measurements were taken on a measurement track outdoors. The goal was to build the world’s most powerful chassis dynamometer to run simulations indoors.

The solutionSince 2010, Entega has worked with components for instrumentation, control and automation systems from Saia Burgess Controls. The desire for inde-

pendence on the ICA level, open communication, the option of putting together individual packages of automa-tion components as well as technical support also played a key role in this demanding project.

The outcomeWith the new DLG-Power-Mix chassis dynamometer, performance and fuel consumption tests can now be carried out on tractors with up to 1000 PS with-out the tractor to be tested having to move from the spot. With 14 different practical and dynamic load cycles, the energy efficiency of tractors can be measured under optimum energy condi-tions.

SBC presents new 4.3” room micro browser panel

The 4.3” room micro browser panel has been developed specifically for use in flexible, high-quality premises such as hotel suites, conference rooms or hospi-tals. This new room panel from SBC can be used as a visualisation and control unit in connection with Saia PCD auto-mation systems. All systems in a room, such as heating and ventilation, can be controlled with the new 4.3” panel, which can be cus-tomised for specific uses. Various sce-narios can be programmed for the needs of a conference room, such as “lights off, blinds down, projector on”. This is only one of many different possibilities for a conference with presentations.

Flexibility thanks to S-Web technologyThe room panel is specifically designed for the needs of web visualisation and can be programmed for all possible ap-plications with software tools. Given the appropriate access rights, any browser can access the automation devices on any known web server in a network. The room panel can be directly connected to a Saia  PCD controller, or the application can be stored locally in the panel. This allows multiple rooms to be linked to-gether so that, for example, one room can be accessed from another and its scenarios modified. Various access re-strictions are available to prevent oper-ating errors or misuse.

Uncomplicated operation The new room panel’s user interface is always clearly displayed and provides plenty of space for creativity. Every con-trol screen can be designed with com-plete flexibility using standard objects or available function templates for configu-ration. The panel’s 4.3" TFT display makes it even easier and more conven-ient to use, and its capacitive touch technology ensures especially quick and sensitive responses. The compact room panel is intended for uncomplicated and easily accessible installation in standard twin flush-mounted boxes.

In the new PCD2.M4x60 controller, Saia Burgess Controls (SBC) presents a sustainable automation solution for buildings and infrastructure. Its modular CPU is powerful, compact and expanda-ble on site.Compatibility with earlier Saia PCD gen-erations and a flexible, modular capacity limit are familiar and appreciated fea-tures of a controller from Saia Burgess Controls. The new PCD2.M4x60 control-ler is based on a flat, space-saving housing design that has been used suc-cessfully for many years in OEM and project business. This modular, freely programmable CPU is ideal both for small- and large-scale applications, for

instance in machine control and building or infrastructure automation.

Powerful platform – modular system de-sign – two versionsThe basic PCD2.M4160 version has four freely assignable slots for PCD2 input/output modules, an RS-485 interface, a USB port and an Ethernet interface with two ports. On top of that, there is a free slot for another serial interface module. In the basic version, this universal con-troller features enough processor pow-er, 512 KB of application program mem-ory and 8 MB of flash memory for data. Data storage can be expanded to up to 2 GB via SD flash cards.

The “big” PCD2.M4560 version has 2 MB of application program memory for de-manding communication functions with BACnet and LonWorks. Its on-board data storage of 128 MB can be expanded to up to 4 GB. It also boasts an additional, electrically isolated on-board RS-485 in-terface and another slot for a Profibus module. Up to 14  communication inter-faces are supported in total (RS-232/-485, Modbus, M-Bus, BACnet MS/TP, LON FTT-10, DALI, MP-Bus etc.). Normally featuring up to 64  inputs/outputs, this version can be increased to up to 1,024.

No battery required thanks to new FRAM technologyThe new ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) technology ensures maintenance-free operation of the PCD2.M4x60. This memory is non-vola-tile, so it reliably protects the current operation data against loss in the long run even when no power is applied. This makes it possible to do without a bat-tery entirely and thus reduce operating costs.

The DLG-Power-Mix chassis dynamometer makes tractors fit for the field.

The outcomeThe 16 buildings at Ettal Abbey have now been renovated to meet the latest ener-gy efficiencyrequirements and are networked to-gether via an advanced building man-agement system. A technical manager and two industrial electricians – one from the abbey itself and the other from the energy contractor MVV – monitor and look after the system and can inter-vene without difficulty from any location if necessary.

The challengeThe Benedictine abbey’s building tech-nology had become very outdated. Inad-equate networking of the individual sta-tions, obsolete technology and a lack of monitoring functions for the systems and their components necessitated a complete renovation. The goal was to set up an overall system that made it possible to control and operate the indi-vidual stations in a uniform manner from a single point and to integrate new sys-tems in line with current energy efficien-cy requirements.

The solutionWhat does the SBC solution look like and why did the customer choose Saia PCD®? The abbey’s entire building systems were optimised for efficiency in the course of renovation of the various buildings. A global, networked monitor-ing facility was added to the building management system. It was also neces-sary to integrate a new steam boiler system and a wood chip boiler. When it comes to the automation stations, the abbey chose the modular Saia PCD 3 se-ries, which features all open standards needed to connect automation to com-munication, IT and the internet.

Secure data transfer with the SBC Connectivity Portal

Keeping power supply quality in check with the SBC power quality analyser

Product world. The SBC Connectivity Por-tal from Saia-Burgess Controls AG allows users to integrate a range of locally con-nected devices and securely access and address them across all networks. When used together with VPN routers, this service enables quick and easy configu-ration of an encrypted network. Connecting different sites (LAN) is al-ways associated with stringent require-ments and high levels of IT expertise. The SBC Connectivity Portal allows geo-graphically distributed systems to be pooled so they can communicate with each other or be monitored and con-trolled remotely. Locally connected PCD

controllers, web panels, computers, tab-lets and smartphones can be easily inte-grated. A public IP address and in-depth network expertise are not required.LAN and 3G routers are connected to the SBC Connectivity Portal over secure VPN connections. The portal uses defined rules to manage access to vari-ous sub-networks. Operating the li-cence-based service is extremely simple: after registration and login, both the connections for the router and the VPN or HTTPS connections for computer, tablet and smartphone can be set up in a few simple steps.

Product world. The power quality analys-er lets users fully monitor the quality of the mains power supply. This device, which comes in electrical control cabinet format and is fitted on DIN rails, helps save space when installed in electri-cal distribution boxes. The wide range of measuring options – including volt-age, current, phase shift and harmonics – makes it possible to analyse all kinds of disturbances with cyclical or event-based data recording. The device also issues an automatic notification if one of the measured values lies outside the pa-rameterised limits.

The integrated LCD screen allows the measured values to be read directly from the device.
