he Societá Agricola Vitivinicola Italiana (SAGRIVIT srl), manages a unique collection of ancient farming estates that boasts the longest heritage of agricultural production in Italy. It includes fourteen historical farming estates and three wineries: Castello di Magione (Umbria), Rocca Bernarda (Friuli Colli Orientali), and Villa Giustiniani (Veneto). Encompassing over 5,000 hectares of land, it is one of the largest private agricultural entities in Italy. With an enduring legacy of fine wine production, it is an ambassador for Italian agricultural excellence to the world.Centuries of Agricultural ProductionFarming covers a broad scope of work, ranging from the cultivation of grains, livestock feed, and tobacco, to animal husbandry.

T SAGRIVIT’s estates are dispersed throughout several regions of the country. There are six in Umbria: Magione, on the shores of Lake Trasimeno, and Sugarella near Viterbo, an historical estate whose origins can be traced to the XII century. Sugarella is considered one of the oldest livestock producers in Italy, having developed extensive expertise over almost a thousand years of farming. Other Umbrian producers include San Giustino di Piccione, San Benedetto di Mugnano, San Sigismondo, Marsciano, and Brufa. In Veneto’s Treviso province are Giavera del Montello and Nervesa della Battaglia in Montello, where the Prosecco DOCG grapes for Villa Giustiniani are grown. Rocca Bernarda, located in the Eastern Hills of Friuli Venezia Giulia, completes the group.

FRIULIRocca Bernarda is steeped in history and has long been a point of reference in Friulan enology. It is among the first wine estates, dating back to 1559, and considered one of the finest in Friuli. Situated in the superb location of Rocca Bernarda, it enjoys a unique microclimate and boasts spectacular terraced vineyards protected by the Julian Alps. The soil, formed over 40 million years ago, is a mixture of sandstone and marl that yields complex wines which reflect the region’s character with an unmistakable minerality. Rocca Bernarda has contributed greatly to the awareness of and appreciation for its native grapes, particularly the Picolit, revitalized by the illustrious Perusini family who owned the estate. (Total property: 220 hectares, 38 under vine)

VENETOVilla Giustiniani has its vineyards in the heart of the spectacular Montello hills, in the D.O.C.G. production zone of Colli Asolani. The wines are characterized by a signature minerality that reflects the deep, stony, glacial-era morainic subsoils typical of the area. Vineyards enjoy a prevalent southwestern exposure, and are ideally situated on a hillside near the Treviso plain where it is crossed by the Piave River. Grapes are raised using the double-arched cane system and are harvested in late September. The Beato Gerardo estate produces its prosecco for the ‘Villa Giustiniani’ label. (Total property: 260 hectares, 21 under vine)

It is beautifully situated within a vast park, where art and nature blend together in the beautiful chapel, the grotto and the small lake. The impressive compound is one of the most beautiful areas of antique Spresiano. Farming activity in the territory covers an area of 260 hectares. The cultivation is excellent, with innovative planting that includes arable land, walnut trees, and vineyards. At Giavera del Montello and Nervesa della Battaglia the vineyards occupy 21 hectares in total, 15 of which are dedicated to the Glera vines, a grape used to produce the sparkling Prosecco D.O.C.G. occa Bernarda is one of the oldest wineries in Friuli Venezia Giulia, and features the most magnificent panorama of the region. The mansion is set in a traditional Italian landscape of ancient cypress trees and breathtaking scenery, and overlooks the sinuous, elegant slope of the vineyards, at the center of which lies the winery. It was in this ideal setting in 1567 that the Counts of Valvason Maniago erected the residence, an architectural masterpiece. Though the construction is often referred to as a castle, it is actually a villa, a refined family home with the simplicity of a country house open to nature. Rocca Bernarda was created as a country residence, uniquely positioned in the breathtaking landscape that surrounds it.

Rocca Bernarda: the garden

An impressive access road lined with ancient olive trees and rose bushes leads to its sophisticated elevated courtyard. There, instead of the expected dark, medieval space, lies a lovely terrace. It features a small Italianate garden bordered by boxwoods and overlooked by the elegant windows of a beautiful orangery. The courtyard, defined on two sides by residential buildings, opens onto a beautiful view of the countryside that extends from the hills to the city of Udine. Its vineyards occupy approximately thirty-eight hectares, most of which are newly planted at a density of 5,500 vines. Plants are obtained through both cloning and massal selection, which ensures optimal quality, as vines are already acclimated to the area. Special attention is paid to sun exposure; red grapes and Picolit are located on the southern slopes, while the eastern or western exposures are assigned to aromatic varieties. And within the estate lies a hidden jewel: a tiny vineyard from the early 900s, with Glera and Ribolla Gialla grapes still in use. Ten different varieties of grapes are cultivated on the estate.

Picolit Colli Orientali del Friuli D.O.C.G.

A Passion for PicolitRocca Bernarda was instrumental in the survival of the Picolit grape, the jewel of Friulian enology. Giacomo Perusini, after having replanted the first cuttings of Picolit in the late nineteenth century, wrote a treatise, ‘Picolit’, in 1906, in which he expounds on its various clones, cultivation techniques, and winemaking. Thus Picolit grapes, which had reached their highest levels of appreciation a century earlier with Count Asquini Fagagna, regained their place in the vineyards. Today they are harvested by hand in late October, then placed on drying racks in a ventilated room for approximately one month, until sugar concentration reaches the desired level. During this period, a rigorous manual selection is done to remove any moldy or spoiled fruit. After pressing, fermentation takes place slowly in wooden casks and ends spontaneously with the first winter cold, leaving a fairly high residual sweetness. A subsequent phase of aging on the lees and bottling 18 months after the harvest help ensure the longevity of the Picolit wine.

Rigorous selection of the pomace and a master distiller’s skill with the traditional discontinuous bain-marie still give this grappa a truly unique personality and enhance the aromas and qualities of the original grapes.

Grappa PicolitThis grappa is distilled from the golden Picolit wine, ancient and renowned, which was reborn on the hillsides of the Rocca Bernarda castle. Its aromatic vivacity, obtained from representative lees of one of the most productive wine-growing areas of Italy, is balanced, direct, and incomparably soft. The select lees, distilled according to the traditional discontinuous method steam coppers, create an harmonious, elegant personality that celebrates the excellence of the Picolit grape.

astello di Magione, a magnificent estate built to shelter pilgrims travelling to Rome or Jerusalem on the Francigena road, dates back to 1150-1170 AD. The oldest part of the castle features a chapel in the Roman style dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, with two beautiful frescos from the Pinturicchio school (XVI century) representing the Virgin and child, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint James, patron and protector of the pilgrims. On numerous occasions Pontiffs and sovereigns stayed in the castle, and it was there in 1502 that the conspiracy against Cesare Borgia, cited in Machiavelli’s famous political work, The Prince, was conceived.
