Let me again congratulate the Production Club onthe staging of our Annual Motivational Seminar.

Only a few weeks ago, we were reminded of thebreadth and depth of the talents and skills that aboundin this “likkle but tallawah” Jamaica, as we watched ourathletes perform at the London Olympics.

The story of Sagicor Life ( formerly Life of J amaica)is no different. We set out forty-two years ago on a mis-sion to build a successful company and to play a mean-ingful role in the development of our country. This wasto be achieved through the training and developmentof our associates to become world-class in all areas ofthe business and by the prudent investment of ourfunds. As we look back we can say. We have made greatstrides towards accomplishing our objectives, for ourassociates in Sagicor and in our subsidiary company ,Pan C aribbean, have demonstrated that they areindeed comprehensively world-class. We can be proudtoo that our resources have been invested in a prudentmanner and have consequently helped to create a bet -ter life for many J amaicans. W e have also in theprocess been able to build signif icant value for ourshareholders.

The job however is not done. Indeed it can never becompleted, for our mission will always be to improvethe quality of life of our employees and the wider com-munity. W e must therefore continue pursuing ourcareers with industry , intelligence, integrity and con -stant adherence to best practices, always keeping inmind our responsibility to our communities and ournation. Let us lead the way as we continue our mission.

I do hope that the conference will be a great successand that everyone will leave feeling renewed andinvigorated.

The SMS2012 committee has once again exceededour expectations by producing another world-class seminar . Congratulations to Seminar

Director Marcia Richards, Chairman of the ProductionClub Albert L yon and the rest of the 2012 Sagicormotivational seminar committee for a job well done!

This year’s Seminar theme, “On a Mission” is verytimely, especially in light of the on-going dif ficulties inthe local and global economies. It is an excellentopportunity for us to have a look at the direction of ourown lives, our families, our communities and theSagicor Jamaica Group. Adopting the mantra of “on amission” will ensure that we remain on the cutting-edge as we strive to be our clients ’ preferred choice forfinancial services.

In J uly of this year Sagicor Life J amaica chose tocommemorate Nelson Mandela Day by partnering withthe Best Care Lodge donating monetarily and in kind.We saw first-hand the needs of the young people livingthere and were deeply moved by their gratitude.Congratulations to the committee for this year ’sMotivational Seminar Charity for also partnering withthis vital institution. They have chosen to assist agroup of young people who have been otherwise aban -doned by their own families and society. I know frommy personal visits to the facility that what the Seminarhas contributed will put a smile in each heart at theBest Care Lodge.

To the guest speakers, attendees and all those whopartnered with the SMS2012 committee to make thisyear’s seminar a reality, a very big welcome and thankyou on behalf of the Sagicor Life J amaica executiveteam. ThePlanning Committee, led by Seminar Director M arciaRichards has once again put together what promises tobe an amazing seminar – one that will engage ourminds, challenge the status quo and intensify ourdesire to be the leading f inancial services G roup inJamaica…we are on a mission!

The Seminar, once again, is set against the backdropof economic challenges in our nation but as evidencedby our superstars at the Olympics, we have the powerwithin us to rise above any challenges whether they bepersonal or professional. This year’s installment willre-emphasize that fact and af ford team members theopportunity to make life adjustments to achieve goalsand propel career development.

Perkins shares some of his most intimatethoughts, views and persuasions for the 2012 editionof the SMS magazine.

Question: Where do you like to lyme? DP:

I am more of a home body now, so Ilike to invite friends over... The other thingI consider “lyming” is getting togetherwith a bunch of friends maybe threetimes a week and go riding (mountainbikes) together . Riding at about fourmiles an hour uphill, you get a chance totalk about everything; business, politics, life, kids – I look forward to it.

Question: Where are your chill spots on theisland?

DP:

The first one is at home but there are a num-ber of places where I like to go with friends andfamily. Port Antonio is one of those places. FromI was a little child I used to spend a lot of time inPortland. I like going to Treasure beach – I love thesafety and the openness. Negril is more for mykids now – We go down there a couple times a year,on holidays or for ATI (for them!). YS Falls also isa favourite..just a very relaxing place. I think thoseplaces are special and they all have great memo-ries because of the people that you are there. Goodfriends and or family .

Question: What is your favourite television pro -gramme?

DP:

I have to confess that my favourite televisionprogramme is what my wife watches. I watch TVmostly at night from.. I like the ‘Good Wife’ and ‘SoYou Think You Can Dance’. I like the talent shows(yes, my wife likes the talents shows too). And I lovefootball, so most Saturday and S unday mornings Iam up early and in my bed or next door at my neigh-bour watching the British Premier League – I am abig Manchester United Fan.

Question: What is the last bit of music you lis -tened to that you enjoyed?

DP:

I listen to all dif ferent sorts of music. Lastnight I was looking at T ommy Lee ’s recent music

video (“Some bwoy”). Catchy tune, don’t know whatit is about those guys, but they have a way of gettingsome interesting stories into the music.

Question: What is your beverage of choice? DP:

Right now cherry juice. I enjoy a really coldRed Stripe Beer or G uiness occasionally, but I canhandle only one at a time these days. But, if I hadto grab for a drink now , I like a glass of slightlychilled red wine if I’m chilling.

Question: Can you share the title of the last bookthat you read?

DP:

The last book I read was ‘The Snowball’ byWarren B uffet, an interesting history about hislife and activities in business. I found him to be anamazing leader and what ’s good is I got a hardcopy of the book which I started reading and thenI got the CDs. So I used to listen to them when Iwas coming to work and stuck in heavy traffic. Thestory was so good, there were times when I wouldpull into my parking spot and sit there and listenfor another four to f ive minutes. I found that wasa very good way to learn and while making thebest use of time.

Question: Do you have a mentor ormentors?

DP:

I have never really had a formalmentor, but certainly for the lastalmost 20 years I have worked veryclosely with both Maurice Facey andRichard Byles and I would say I real-ly learned a lot from both of them.

So if I had to say who were the per -sons who have mentored me for the

most of my professional career I wouldsay it would be those two individuals. They are

two people I admire very much.

Question: What has been your motivation? DP:

I have learned that there is no substitute forhard work. There really isn’t any substitute for hardwork. I enjoy what I do so I am very committed. Idon’t see this as a job; I see it really as somethingthat’s an interesting challenge that I get paid for –which is great.

Question: What would you consider to be yourgreatest accomplishment?

DP:

I’ve never really thought in those terms. Ithink my kids are my greatest accomplishment. Ihave two children who will be 18 and 20 years oldthis year. I am pretty proud of them. I can ’t takemuch credit; my wife is really the person that over -sees them. I think my strength is that I have is justthe ability and the willingness to work hard ... and Irecognize that whatever P anCaribbean accomplish-es is as a result of the collective ef forts of our teammembers.

Question: What is your personal mission? DP:

My mission is to see P anCaribbean contin-ue to grow and to become even a better catalyst forgood than it has been in the past.

Getting clear on what drives you is one ofthe fastest ways to break through in yourcareer. Clarity equals massive power. WhatI can tell you is this – getting clear on yourpersonal Success Drivers will not only pro-vide you a “compass” to make your deci-sions, it will also allow you to feel morepowerful and confident in everything thatyou do – particularly in the relationshipsthat you build, both personally and profes -sionally.

The Power of “Success Markers”

Here are some of the key reasons why iden -tifying your Success DNA is so powerful.

Your Success Markers give you purpose, understanding and clarity.

If you’re not clear on what your values are,you often end up living the values of otherpeople around you – leading you to a senseof emptiness, confusion and monotony. On the other hand, when you begin to liveyour life aligned with your values, theyhelp bring you purpose, direction whole-ness, satisfaction and a sense of clarity.

They promote greater cooperation and joyin your relationships.

Understanding your own values allow youto be clear about what you will accept andtolerate in relationships. Being clear onyour own values allows you to attract andseek out people with similar values, allow -ing you to spend more time feeling under -stood and accepted, as opposed to strug -gling against what seems like “difficult”personalities.

They prevent you from making bad choices.

Once you get clear on your values, thethings that matter most to you becomemuch more obvious and easy to identify. As a result, you make fewer decisions thatend up conflicting with your values, whichleads to unhappiness and constant frustra-tions.

Defining them gives you confidence.

You’ll notice that you will develop a quietsense of confidence once you’re clear onwhat drives and motivates you. By spend-ing the time to identify and write down, you’ll know deep inside that you’re makingdecisions for the right reasons, as opposed

You may be familiar with “core values” or having“internal drivers” – I call them your Success DNA

,which is the unique set of Success Markers that youpossess. They’re the unique beliefs and values that

motivate you and drive your decisions (of ten withoutyou even realizing it). While most people have a

basic understanding of what these “Success Drivers”are, very few people ever take the time to actually

discover what their own actually are.

Discovering your

Page 24: Sagicor SMS 2012 Magazine

SMS2012 | ON A MISSION • Page 19

to being manipulated or chasing falsehopes – setting yourself up for failure. You’ll make decisions and lead your life ina more deliberate way, because you’ll havea strong sense of clarity.

Getting clear on them makes life simpler.

Quite simply, once you’re clear on yourvalues, life gets simpler, because you’re notconstantly faced with anxiety or tornbetween making choices. By using yourmarkers as a compass to decisions youneed to make, the answer becomeseasier to see. In the end, themost successful people arethose who make the mostdecisions, and this tool givesyou that ability to makedecisions much morequickly and effectively.

part of being a good corporate citizen requires a company ’s contribu-tion to societal development. Sagicor Life J amaica, being the good cor-porate citizen, has continued to play its part through the annualSagicor Motivational Seminar, and this year was no exception.

Each year the seminar committee selects a charity and gives whether monetarilyor in kind to individuals and organizations with signif icant financial need. Onyour registration form you were asked to donate to charity and we are pleased tosay that your generous contributions this year have greatly benef itted the chil-dren and staff of the Best Care Foundation, a state-run child care home for phys -ically and mentally challenged children.

Our Charity Committee went ‘on a mission’ to ensure that as much help wasgiven to this Foundation which lacks well-needed financial resources and properfacilities to care for these special children. Over a two month period, our teamorganized a back-to-school clothes and school supplies drive across the SagicorJamaica Group, held a raffle to garner some additional f inancial assistance andgave selflessly of their time to a work day to meet with the children and staf f ofthe home and do some well needed renovation to the facility . These efforts wereundoubtedly a huge success!

We can’t say how grateful the Foundation is for your generous contributions. This initiative would not have been possible without the help of so many peopleand so we must say a special thank you to all team members who actively partici -pated in one way or the other, and to our sponsors who donated gif ts and kind.

Please join me in congratulating our hardworking and dedicated Charity team,Barrington Groves, Hugh Meredith and AlbertLyon, who went above and beyond to executethis year’s charity. Well done gentlemen!

By Willie Jolley, Author of the International Best-Selling Book "A Setback Is A Setup For A Comeback!"

Has your business ever had a setback? Ofcourse it has. Perhaps your right-hand personleft for your biggest competitor. Or maybeyour top salesperson quit without notice andtook a few key accounts. Or even worse, per -haps you lost everything because of a badbusiness decision.

Whatever happened, whether it was a large orsmall setback, how you dealt with the issuemost likely determined where you are today. Those who realize that setbacks are simplypart of the business process usually thrive,

while those who dwell on the changes set -backs bring routinely falter.

The fact is, a setback is really a change thatneeds to occur in order to move forward. Andno matter what industry you're in, you'rebound to have things change. The key is toremember that these temporary setbacks canempower you to reach even greater levels offuture business success. No matter whatobstacle has plagued your business, followingis the four-step process that can help you sur -vive and thrive through any business setback.

How to Survive and ThriveThrough any Business Setback:

The four-step process of turning a setback into a comeback

1. Focus Your Vision

1. Where you focus your energy determineswhere you will go. The old saying states,“Whatever you focus on longest, alwaysbecomes strongest!” If you focus on the set-back and the challenges it brought you, yourbusiness can't move forward. However, when you focus your vision on what youwant your business to become-despite thesetback-then you're using the setback forwhat it really is: a growth opportunity and atransitionary period.

2. Make a Decision

Both success and failure are decisions. Soonce your vision is in place, you need todecide you're going to win despite the set-back. The truth is successful business peo -ple choose to be successful. No matter whatsetback they encounter, they decide to over-come it and prevail.

3. Take Action

A decision without action is simply an illu -sion; and an action without a vision is mereconfusion! But a vision plus action, puttogether, will give your life a transfusion. And you can change the world! Remember, you might not be responsible for gettingknocked down, but you are responsible forgetting back up! Only those who act achievetheir goals.

4. Keep the Desire

Desire is the degree of energy you're willingto exert in order to reach your goal. In otherwords, how badly do you want your businessto survive? And what are you willing to doin order to achieve it? Keep in mind an oldbusiness saying: "It's impossible to reachsecond base if you are afraid to leave f irstbase." Decide how badly you want to achievethe goal and then keep going af ter it untilyou achieve it.

Remember, having a business setback is notan "if" proposition; it's a "when." And whenone occurs in your business, you need tomake a conscious decision to view it not as aproblem, but rather as a learning opportuni -ty. You must decide what you're going to doabout the setback and focus on the solution.

Every super successful businessperson hashad setbacks; however, they realize that asetback is not the end of the road, but rathera bend in the road...and the only ones whocrash are those who fail to make the turn!

By viewing your business' setback as achance for future growth, every businesschallenge can have a positive outcome. Andevery setback can be seen as nothing but asetup for an incredible comeback.

Rule One

- You will receive a body. Whether youlove it or hate it, it's yours for life, so accept it.What counts is what's inside.

Rule Two

- You will be presented with lessons.Life is a constant learning experience, which everyday provides opportunities for you to learn more. These lessons are specific to you, and learningthem 'is the key to discovering and fulf illing themeaning and relevance of your own life'.

Rule Three

- There are no mistakes, only les -sons. Your development towards wisdom is aprocess of experimentation, trial and error, so it'sinevitable things will not always go to plan or turnout how you'd want. Compassion is the remedy forharsh judgment - of ourselves and others.Forgiveness is not only divine - it's also 'the act oferasing an emotional debt'. Behaving ethically, withintegrity, and with humour - especially the ability tolaugh at yourself and your own mishaps - are cen -tral to the perspective that 'mistakes' are simplylessons we must learn.

Rule Four

- The lesson is repeated until learned.Lessons repeat until learned. What manifests asproblems and challenges, irritations and frustra-tions are more lessons - they will repeat until yousee them as such and learn from them. Your ownawareness and your ability to change are requisitesfor executing this rule. Also fundamental is theacceptance that you are not a victim of fate or cir-cumstance - 'causality' must be acknowledged; thatis to say: things happen to you because of how youare and what you do. To blame anyone or anythingelse for your misfortunes is an escape and a denial;you yourself are responsible for you, and what hap -pens to you. Patience is required - change doesn'thappen overnight, so give change time to happen.

Rule Five

- Learning does not end. While youare alive there are always lessons to be learned.Surrender to the 'rhythm of life', don't struggleagainst it. Commit to the process of constant learn -ing and change - be humble enough to alwaysacknowledge your own weaknesses, and be flexibleenough to adapt from what you may be accus -tomed to, because rigidity will deny you the free -dom of new possibilities.

Rule Six

- "There" is no better than "here". Theother side of the hill may be greener than yourown, but being there is not the key to endless hap -

piness. Be grateful for and enjoy what you have, and where you are on your journey. Appreciate theabundance of what's good in your life, rather thanmeasure and amass things that do not actually leadto happiness. Living in the present helps you attainpeace.

Rule Seven

- Others are only mirrors of you.You love or hate something about another personaccording to what you love or hate about yourself.Be tolerant; accept others as they are, and strive forclarity of self-awareness; strive to truly understandand have an objective perception of your own self, your thoughts and feelings. Negative experiencesare opportunities to heal the wounds that you carry .Support others, and by doing so you support your -self. Where you are unable to support others it is asign that you are not adequately attending to yourown needs.

Rule Eight

- What you make of your life is up toyou. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. Take responsi-bility for yourself. Learn to let go when you cannotchange things. Don't get angry about things - bittermemories clutter your mind. Courage resides in allof us - use it when you need to do what's right foryou. We all possess a strong natural power andadventurous spirit, which you should draw on toembrace what lies ahead.

Rule Nine

- Your answers lie inside of you. Trustyour instincts and your innermost feelings, whether you hear them as a little voice or a flash ofinspiration. Listen to feelings as well as sounds.Look, listen, and trust. Draw on your natural inspi -ration.

Rule Ten

- You will forget all this at birth. Weare all born with all of these capabilities - our earlyexperiences lead us into a physical world, awayfrom our spiritual selves, so that we become doubt -ful, cynical and lacking belief and conf idence. Theten Rules are not commandments, they are univer -sal truths that apply to us all. When you lose yourway, call upon them. Have faith in the strength ofyour spirit. Aspire to be wise - wisdom is the ulti -mate path of your life, and it knows no limits otherthan those you impose on yourself.
