If you need to contact the school, please call 204-878-4233 during the office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you are unable to call during these hours, you may send a fax 878-4237 or email [email protected]. You may also send a note with your child.

All visitors are to report to the main office. All visitors, including parents, must report to the main office upon entering the school. We ask that parents do not go straight to their child’s classroom. If you are dropping something off for your child, please leave

it at the office, and we will make sure he/she gets it. If you are coming to pick up your child before 3:10 p.m., please report to the office, and we will call your child down. If you are coming at the end of the day, please wait for your child in the front foyer.

Reminders re: Transportation Change of Drop off: If your child needs to be dropped off at another

location, the transportation department requires written

notice 24 hours in advance.

Picking up your child from school: If your child is a bus student, and you will be

picking him/her up, you must send a note to the school

office, or call us by 2:45 p.m. The office gets very busy

at the end of the school day, and it is difficult to inform

all necessary parties on time if we get calls at the end of

the day.

Dismissal

Parents are always welcome in our school. We love to see you and catch up with all the news. However dismissal is a very busy time for our

teachers. We really encourage parents to wait by the front entrance at dismissal time and not in

the front of the classroom doors. If you wish to see a teacher after dismissal, please call, send them an e-mail to set up an appointment or wait

until the students have been dismissed.

Notes from Home It is not necessary to send more than one note per child (to

the office, bus driver, teacher, etc.). All notes are handed in to the teacher, and sent to the office after announce-

ments. The secretary will ensure that all necessary parties have received the information.

Allergy Alert! The most common food allergies in children are: peanuts/

nuts, milk, eggs, seafood, and wheat. Please be aware that we have children with these allergies at ELI. Many of our students and teachers suffer from asthma and other res-

piratory disorders. Students should restrain from using strong perfume and deodorant sprays in the school.

Medication Notice To ensure the school is using current information about

your child’s medication, the proper Regulation forms must be completed each year. If you require one for your child

please contact the school. Reminder, that medication MUST be brought in by an adult and in its original con-tainer. As per Divisional policy please be advised that

school staff are not permitted to administer medication that is NOT prescribed by a physician.

Important Reminders (Please keep this page for future reference)

Reminders re: Absences If your child will be absent, we ask that you, the parent/guardian, please call the school by 9:30 a.m. If

you do not let us know why your child is absent, we must call you to verify the absence. Please note: If your child is a bus student, you must also call the Transportation Department to let them know your

child will not be on the bus that morning. Please remind your children that if they come in late, they must report to the office for a late slip. Otherwise, the office does not know they have arrived, and they will remain marked as absent.

Parent Advisory Council

PAC would like to thank everyone who continues to support our fundraising efforts. Remaining

fundraisers and events for this school year include Staff Appreciation from May 21-24, and in June we

have the Color Run and Summer Kick-off BBQ to look forward to. Mabel’s Labels is ongoing and runs

all year long.

PAC is going paperless starting in the Fall of 2019 so if you have not yet registered for the online

system, please note that you require your child’s Student Number to do so. Student Numbers can be

obtained by calling Michelle at the school office. Once registered, you can order and pay for PAC

organized lunches and some school events online at https://srsd.schoolcashonline.com/

We are always looking for ways that we can support our school, and enhance and improve the

playground and school experience for our children. Our monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday

of every month in the ELI Staffroom with the next meeting taking place May 7 at 6:30 p.m. If you are

interested in joining PAC in the fall but cannot attend the May or June meetings, please send an email

to [email protected].

Be sure to check out the new PAC board located in the school foyer! It is big and bright and provides

you with lots of PAC related information. We are always looking for new ideas, members and

volunteers to help out with our various actitivies and fundraisers so please take a moment to see how

you can help out!

Feeding a Picky Eater

If your child is a picky eater, you are not alone! Up to 50% of children exhibit picky eating.

Many parents get frustrated by this behaviour and may start pressuring children to ‘eat their veggies’, but this may increase pickiness.

Enjoyable, non-pressuring eating environments have been found to decrease picky eating.

Saying to your child ‘you don’t have to eat it’ and really mean it, will decrease pressure and increase willingness to try new foods.

Keep conversations at the dinner table positive, and try to stay away from talking about food likes & dislikes.

If your child doesn’t like a new food right away, try again! It can take up to 8-15 tries before a new food is accepted.

Get kids involved with preparing meals!

Hands on experience using new foods increases the chances your child will try it. We have provided a snack recipe with lentils to try in this newsletter!

Want more information on this topic? The Ellyn Satter Institute has excellent tips and resources on how to feed so your child eats well: https://www.ellynsatterinstitute.org/how-to-feed

Disclaimer: Some recipes or food suggestions may not be suitable for people with allergies. Please check with your local school to identify foods that are acceptable or unacceptable in the classroom.

Is it hard to get your kids to eat a variety of

healthy foods? Do they refuse eating certain fruits and vegetables? Do you wish you knew how to get your kids to eat what you put in front of them? A positive, non-pressuring eating environment, involvement in cooking, and repeated trials with new foods can all decrease picky eating & improve intake! Link the theme to behaviour. What are barriers to making the theme happen? What are solutions to the barriers?

No Bake Coconut Banana Energy Bites

Ingredients:

1 cup coconut flakes, unsweetened

¼ cup sunflower seeds, unroasted, unsalted

½ tsp ground cinnamon

½ cup mashed ripe banana, approx. 1 whole

½ cup cooked green lentils

3 Tbsp honey

¼ cup mini chocolate chips or dried cranberries

1 Tbsp coconut oil, melted (not hot)

½ cup coconut flour

Instructions: 1. Place coconut flakes, sunflower seeds, cinnamon, banana, lentils, and honey in a food processor. Pulse until

smooth, scrape down the sides and pulse again. Transfer to a bowl using a spatula. 2. Stir in chocolate chips and oil until fully incorporated. Stir in the coconut flour until fully combined. 3. Roll into bite-size balls, about 1 Tbsp (15 mL) in size. Cover and refrigerate or freeze for 5-10 minutes. The bites

will become more solid and ready to eat. Store in an air tight container in the fridge to snack on during the week, or freeze until you are ready to nibble.

Quick Tips:

Coconut flour can be found at most bulk food, grocery or health stores.

You can also use almond flour instead of coconut flour. Simply stir in enough flour as needed to easily roll the batter into balls.

For the cooked lentils, you can use canned or homemade from scratch. For more information on how to cook/use lentils, visit https://www.lentils.org/recipes-cooking/how-to-cook-lentils/

Ideas to get the kids involved with this recipe: - Measuring out the coconut flakes, sunflower seeds, or chocolate chips - Mashing the ripe banana - Rolling the batter into bite sized balls
