SIZING GUIDE
AS /NZ 1319-1994 states requirements for design and application of safety signs intended for the workplace, providing criteria for:
• Regulation and control of safety related behaviour• Hazard warning • Emergency information, including fire protection details
Safety Signs and Australian / New Zealand Standards
Sign Classification and Use1. Danger SignsWarn of a specific hazard, hazardous conditions or environment that is likely to be life threatening.
2. Warning SignsNotify of a particular hazard, hazardous conditions or environment that is NOT likely to be life threatening.
3. Mandatory SignsIndicate that an instruction MUST be carried out.
4. Prohibition SignsAre an alert that an activity is not permitted.
5. Emergency Information SignsIdentify the location of, or directions to, emergency related facilities such as safety equipment, exits or first aid facilities.
6. Fire SignsAdvise of the location of fire alarms and fire-fighting facilities.
Recommended minimum sizes for signs are as follows: Signs in a factory or yard environment, where lighting is good and signs are mounted in reasonably prominent positions.
Symbolic Sign (Pictogram) size 15mm per metre of viewing distance.
Signs in poor lighting conditions, not likely to fall readily into the observers line of sight, or are otherwise likely to be placed in less conspicuous positions should have signs increased by 50% or more in size.
Lettering Size Upper Case - 5mm per metre of viewing distance. Lower Case - 4mm per metre of viewing distance.

Supplementary Markers
Used for pipe content identification, pipe markers must be positioned nearby junctions, valves, service appliances, bulkhead and wall penetrations. AS 1345-1995 and NZS 5807:1980 (Identification of the contents of pipes, conduits and ducts) states that pipe markers must be placed in intervals of no more than 8m apart. Pipe marker spacing may extend to (but not exceed) 50 meters on long, continuous straight runs of external services.
AS 1345-1995 and NZS5807:1980 are based on a colour identification. Safety is the most important factor in choosing an appropriate colour. For example the colour for acids and alkalis (Violet) would only be applied where a potentially corrosive hazard existed.
Two supplementary markers provide more detailed information on pipe contents. Colours include:
• Yellow - indicates especially hazardous materials (with symbols for radioactive and biological hazards)• Dark blue - identifies materials fit for human consumption
These supplementary markers are sold separately. If the direction of flow is applicable, one chevron is to be applied.
As with all of our products they are deigned to meet the relevant Australian and New Zeanald Standards. To comply with these standards these markers should be applied as a full wrap of the pipe, not as individual labels.
AS1345-1995 and NZS 5807:1980 stipulates that pipes with an Outside Diameter of less than 40mm shall be a continuous band of the basic identification colour around the circumference of the pipe. Where applicable, a written description (in uppercase font, not less than 4mm) may be placed on the pipe.
