certificate of recognition (cOr) ProgramSafety Services Nova Scotia Certificate of Recognition (SSNS COR) program assists companies in developing and implementing an Occupational Health and Safety System that meets COR Requirements. COR is awarded to companies that have demonstrated their commitment to workplace safety and health by building a safety culture in their organization. SSNS COR is approved by the Workers Compensation Board of Nova Scotia and is recognized by the Nova Scotia Departments of Labour and Workforce Development, Transportation and Finance.

cOurse cAncellAtiOn lineIn the event of inclement weather, course registrants are reminded to call the Safety Services Nova Scotia Course Cancellation Line at (902) 454-9621, ext. 234. The line will be updated at 7:30 am the morning of the course.

refunD POlicyNon-attendance will result in a charge of 100% of the course cost. Substitutions are permitted prior to the start of the class.

No penalty if ten (10) days notice of cancellation is given prior to course start date. Cancellations less than ten (10) days prior to the start of the course will result in a charge of 100% of the course cost. Options include a transfer or course credit (12 month expiry date).

Please note that we may cancel, postpone or reschedule a course at our discretion. If available substitute dates are not suitable to you, you shall receive a full refund.

14 HeAltH AnD sAfety PrOfessiOnAl (HsP) DesignAtiOn certificAte PrOgrAMThe Health and Safety Professional (HSP) Designation Certificate Program is designed for individuals who wish to enhance their education in the health and safety field with a unique blend of practical and academic development in a wide range of subject matter.

Safety Services Nova Scotia developed this program to complement existing recognized programs and provide a foundation for continuing development in the Health and Safety field. The HSP Designation Certificate Program consists of a number of prerequisite training credits including both mandatory and elective elements, based on the needs and interests of the participant.

The HSP Designation is endorsed and accredited by Safety Services Canada.

The program includes:

• A registration/administrative process that tracks the progress of participants; • 30 credits;• A certification in Auditing Techniques;• An education in a variety of safety subjects from technical skills to leadership skills;• A practical project applying knowledge and skills in practice;• A final exam that reflects the content of the training;• Opportunities to network with peers in similar roles; and,• A designation that can be used by graduates to reflect their efforts and dedication in the area of safety leadership.

Since becoming a member of Safety Services Nova Scotia in 2006 we have changed our safety culture to be proactive, and as a result have decreased incident rates and saved many dollars. We accomplished this with the aid of Safety Services Nova Scotia training programs and the COR program.

Working toward the HSP designation was a great experience. All the staff and instructors were always there to help and the information was always up to date and practical for use in our workplace. We have marked our success by achieving the certificate of recognition and completing the HSP designation. Our new safety culture has improved morale and has led to many new business opportunities.

Due Diligence/bill c45This course provides: a basic understanding of due diligence and how it works for you and your organization; a discussion of the rights and responsibilities of all employees/employers in the workplace and what they mean; and an overview of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations.

fire siMulAtOr – eXtinguisHerParticipants will learn basic fire theory, suppression methods and how to use a fire extinguisher. Each participant will successfully extinguish a simulated fire using the proper technique and within the desired time.

HAzArD recOgnitiOnRecognizing, evaluating and controlling hazards are the basic building blocks of any safety and health management system. This program is designed to inform and motivate participants, as well as provide them with effective tools to implement a successful hazard recognition program in their organization or update an existing program.

JOb tAsk AnAlysisA Job Task Analysis is a valuable safety tool to identify hazards and assess risk in work procedures. The information from a Job Task Analysis is critical to develop a comprehensive Safe Work Procedure and ensure work does not cause injury, illness or property damage. This course will teach you how to conduct a Job Task Analysis and write a Safe Work Procedure. The workshop is designed to provide an interactive learning experience through group discussions and activities.

POwer line sAfetyThis course provides critical information about the hazards of working near overhead power lines including explanations of the relevant sections of the current Occupational Health and Safety Regulations in Nova Scotia.

sAfe lifting PrActicesThis course will cover the importance of safe lifting, including injury statistics, keys to good posture, proper body mechanics and the do’s and don’ts of lifting. This course is presented in partnership with CBI Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre and Eastern Rehabilitation Inc.

wAreHOuse HAzArDsThis course will help you recognize workplace hazards, prevent incident and injury, follow safe work practices and select and use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in warehouse environments. You will understand your duties and rights as given in the Occupational Health and Safety legislation and how to apply this knowledge to your workplace.

wHMisThis course is designed to educate a worker, supervisor or manager on the major elements of the WHMIS program. Students will become more familiar with labels, MSDS and hazards associated with common chemicals and hazardous products.

bAsic riggingThis course is designed to introduce participants to the principles and regulations pertaining to rigging. Participants require hard hats, CSA approved footwear, safety glasses, gloves and a harness.

AeriAl PlAtfOrM/bucket truck eVAcuAtiOnThis course combines a half-day of classroom learning with a half-day of practical application. Training includes a presentation on equipment (including storage, maintenance and inspection), a review of principles of fall protection and the inspection of equipment. Students will participate in seven controlled descents from heights of 3.5 to 7 metres.

cOnfineD sPAce entry AwAreness – recertificAtiOnParticipants will learn about the hazards of working in confined spaces and the protective measures and equipment that help ensure a safer working environment. This course is now part of the CRSP Certification Maintenance Program (CMP #10251, 0.5 point).*Prerequisite – 2 Day Confined Space Entry.

eMergency PrePAreDnessIn an emergency, immediate, on-the-ground decisions are critical to the final outcome. A thorough, detailed emergency response plan and appropriate employee training will go a long way to making sure an emergency does not turn into a disaster. In this workshop, you will learn how to identify potential emergencies, assess the risk, plan your response and train employees to ensure your organization is ready for anything. This workshop is designed to be highly interactive and include you directly in the learning experience. This course is now part of the CRSP Certification Maintenance Program (CMP #10253, 0.5 point).

fAll PrOtectiOnThis course ensures students understand the importance of having a fall protection procedure in place and the key components of a fall protection system. Topics covered include procedures for inspections, storage and maintenance of fall protection equipment. This course is now part of the CRSP Certification Maintenance Program (CMP #10254, 0.5 point).

fire wArDenParticipants will learn basic fire theory, regulatory requirements, suppression methods, duties involved with inspection of the workplace, reporting procedures and evacuation principles. This course helps meet that requirement by focusing on safe practices and procedures for operating forklifts. It is a comprehensive classroom program combined with a practical, hands on component suitable for both experienced and novice operators. This course is now part of the CRSP Certification Maintenance Program (CMP #10256, 0.5 point).

funDAMentAl PrinciPles Of insPecting PersOnAl fAll PrOtectiOn equiPMentThis course is an introduction to inspecting personal fall protection equipment including harness, lanyards, SRL, rope grabs and ropes. Course will include theory and practical exercises.

This course discusses the benefits of hazard identification programs, investigative techniques, interviewing skills, evaluation of risk and developing effective recommendations to lower or eliminate incidents in the workplace. The program uses open discussion and case study work to apply knowledge in an interactive learning environment.

lOckOutLockout related incidents are usually very serious. Inadequate processes and controls may lead to temporary paralysis and respiratory failure, broken bones, crushed limbs, hemorrhage, destruction of tissue, nerves and muscles, blindness and death. This course is designed to ensure that your company can develop a lockout system that complies with the applicable legislative requirements and industry best practice.

MAnAging wOrkPlAce ViOlenceThis program will provide participants with a solid understanding of workplace violence, the legislative requirements and responsibilities, as well as how to conduct a hazard assessment and develop effective violence prevention plans. The program uses interactive discussion and exercises to ensure an effective and fun learning environment.

OccuPAtiOnAl HeAltH & sAfety cOMMitteeParticipants will gain in-depth knowledge of the legislative requirements regarding OHS committees, their role in the workplace, the rights and responsibilities of all persons in the workplace and strategies to ensure the effectiveness of the committee.

Office sAfetyParticipants will gain knowledge and understanding of health and safety and the law, workplace health and safety, workplace inspections, incident investigation and the functions and duties of safety committee representatives and committee members with a focus on office environments.

scAffOlD bAsicsThis course is designed to enable workers or supervisors to avoid incident. It includes one half-day of theory and regulations and one half-day of practical training. Participants should be equipped with gloves, eye protection, hard hats, CSA approved footwear and fall arrest PPE.

seVen sAfety HAbits tHAt cAn sAVe yOur lifeThis program discusses cultural change and how seven simple habits can save your life or the lives of those around you, both on and off the job.

susPenDeD Access equiPMentThis course includes theory, regulations and hands-on practical training. Participants should be equipped with hard hats, CSA approved footwear, gloves, safety glasses and a harness.

ten stePs tO sAfety eXcellence fOr seniOr MAnAgersThis program is designed to focus the senior management team on safety. Ten steps that will help the organization move the safety system forward will be reviewed, as well as the manager’s role in the process.

wOrkPlAce insPectiOnsThis course will enable students to understand the role of inspections in a health and safety program, describe how proper planning and preparation are key ingredients to successful inspection and discuss and understand the importance of follow-up.

rOAD sAfety DriVer iMPrOVeMent PrOgrAMsOur Defensive Driving Course (DDC) and Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC) are recognized by Access NS to exit the Graduated Licensing System and to apply for point deduction.

DefensiVe DriVingThe Defensive Driving Course is an established, proven program. Participants will learn life-long safe driving habits through this course. The three-part Collision Prevention Formula will show drivers how to recognize the hazard, understand the defense and act in time. The participants will learn the principles of defensive driving, collision avoidance techniques, the six adverse driving conditions, the time-interval formula, the habitual eye-lead tie technique and the pre-trip mental inventory.

55 AliVeThe 55 Alive Program is designed to help Canadians 55 years and over gain more confidence behind the wheel, improve awareness of traffic hazards, learn updates on traffic laws and new technology, anticipate the actions of other drivers, and identify and correct some driving habits. It takes physical changes into consideration and shows drivers how to compensate for those changes.

sAfe DriVer AwArD PrOgrAMEmployees who have driven for at least nine months in the last year without incurring a preventable collision are eligible for this award certificate. Companies maintaining driver records may submit driver information to Safety Services Nova Scotia for a recognition certificate.

sAfe winter DriVingThis seminar is designed to help new or inexperienced drivers enhance their driving skills during winter conditions. It also serves as a great refresher for the experienced driver.

PrOfessiOnAl DriVer iMPrOVeMentThis course helps professional transport drivers improve their defensive driving techniques. Through the use of visual aids and qualified instructors, this course will show drivers how to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Classroom participation involves case studies and active discussion of real life situations, as well as identifying traffic hazards. This course will help employers reduce operating costs, collisions, sick leave, insurance benefits, vehicle abuse and maintenance costs

wOODs rOADsThis program consists of both classroom and practical in-vehicle sessions. The three-hour classroom session is lecture-style, allowing students to give feedback and hold discussions. Topics include conditions of driving ability and skills of vision, eye lead time and braking/stopping distances. The one-hour per student in-vehicle session takes place on woods roads in the student’s vehicle. Students will demonstrate and practice braking techniques, emergency braking, turning and stopping.

DriVer eDucAtiOnSafety Services Nova Scotia has been involved in driver training for over four decades. We are ISO registered which ensures our courses and services are high quality and continuously improving. All our instructors have the experience, training and knowledge to teach students to drive safely and defensively. The training consists of 25 hours of class time and 10 hours of in-car instruction, including your road test time. This is an approved driver education program as required by the graduated licensing program and qualifies for insurance discounts. The course fee must be paid in full before in-car lessons are scheduled. The fees include use of the driving school vehicle for your driver’s test.
