A safe site

On a chemical site there are dangers and risks that you need to be able to assess in order to work safely. And strict procedures apply.

The main regulations are included in this presentation. Please also listen toyour boss, experienced colleagues or your client at all times. Ask for advice!

Anyone who works for us must work safely and is assessed accordingly. We have the right to check the work. Unsafe materials, tools and/or working methods can be banned, and unsafe work can be halted.

With EVERY contact of the product with skin or eyes the emergency or eye shower needs to be used.

Before starting work find out where the closest emergency and eye shower is located.

Proceed as follows:

1. Press the red handle.

4. Rinse at least 15 minutes.

2. Press the alarm panel with your knee multiple times. This will notify the control room.

Care after contact with productHAZARDOUS PRODUCTS

Every contact with a product (however minimal) as well as any injury needs to be looked after by the BASF medical department (building B 520). An injury can have serious consequences!

The medical facilities are manned every day, 24/7.

In case of an accident call the internal emergency number 777.

2. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

PPE, provided by your employer, need to protect you against any other risks.

Everyone in the installation is obliged to wear the following personal protective equipment at all times:

4. TRAFFIC REGULATIONS

Do not park in front of fire hydrants, under pipe bridges and near the track!

Seatbelts are compulsory in vehicles

Pay attention at unguarded level crossings! The train always has right of way.

Intervention service and ambulance always have right of way.

It is mandatory for all cyclists to wear a fluorescent vest on the site

Exception: not mandatory in case of commuter traffic from and to the gate, but then a bicycle light is mandatory!

5. PERMITS

Permits

A permit can only be obtained by people with special training.

Every permit needs to be on-site with the person executing the works.

The permits need to be shown at the simple request of a BASF employee.

A-permit (work permit)PERMITS

The A-permit is necessary for any work carried out on the site!

A-permit (work permit)PERMITS

The measures you need to take on top of the standard measures are indicated on the permit.

The regulations on the permits need to be explained by your superior.

The permit needs to be signed overleaf by any person working on the site by way of acceptance of the regulations.

B-permit (access permit)PERMITS

The B-permit allows you to access tanks, columns or other enclosed spaces.

The measures you need to take on top of the standard measures are indicated on the permit.

Under no condition may these areas be entered, not even briefly or partly, without

• continuous monitoring

• and registration of a safety-guard

• and a B-permit !

V-permit (fire permit)PERMITS

The A-permit combined with a V-permit allows you to make fire or sparks but not to smoke.

G-permit (digging permit)PERMITS

The G-permit is necessary for all below ground activities.

6. WORKING SAFELY INSIDE INSTALLATIONS & WITH MACHINERY

Machines with damaged cables constitute a major electrocution hazard and may never be used. Electrical machines and cables need to be in perfect condition.Keep cables away from passages and stairs as much as possible. Preferably use S-hooks to hang up cables.

Newly-built platforms, holes, … need to have a solid barrier (in wood or metal).

Scaffolds may only be used when a valid S-permit is present.

No changes (not even temporarily moving a plank) are allowed to be made by unauthorised people.

Order and cleanliness, also on scaffolds!

In case of activities at height, fall protection is necessary.

Collective protective equipment is preferred.

If this is not possible fall protection harness needs to be worn.

Wearing and securing fall protection is compulsory in cherry pickers and scissor lifts.

All workers must leave their workplace clean and tidy after finishing work. This also helps us to prevent accidents.

7. REPORTING DUTY

If you pass the access test, you will receive a personal badge that you must carry on your person at all times and, on request, show immediately.

Anyone entering a production installation, building or workshop needs to register via an M-reader.

All permits fall due at the “end of the alarm” and need to be issued again.

At the end of the alarm after evacuation you need to re-register (badge) at the plant that you left.

Test alarm: every 1st Thursday of the month at 12.00. This test alarm starts with an “end of alarm”. Do not react to these alarms.

When there is an alarm in a plant, the orange flash bulb on top of the IN-reader is on.

Go immediately to the A-reader of the indicated assembly point.

How to recognize a ‘plant in alarm’EMERGENCY PLAN

The alarm reader (= A-reader) is indicated as follows:

When the red rotating light on an alarm pole is on, the bell rings and the text ‘STOP ALARM’ appears:

Stop your vehicle, stop engine and wait for further instructions.

Or you can turn around and take another, safer route.

This rule also applies to cyclists and pedestrians.
