Introduction
New logging employees must master a number of skills when they begin work. To avoid injury, new employees must recognize hazards and understand how to avoid them. Crew leaders count on new workers gaining those skills. New workers can learn these skills in the following ways:
P Talking about them in safety meetings and training; P Reading on their own from owners manuals and safety publications; and P Seeing them in videos, demonstrations, on-the-job training, and warning symbols.
Effective training is often designed to rely on all three methods of communication. When one of those methods is not effective, it is possible that the worker did not gain those skills. The goal of this publication is to assist crew leaders in transmitting safety information in the field. The publication uses diagrams, icons, and graphics to identify hazards and safe work procedures. Images should convey safety information regardless of how well workers read English or comprehend spoken English.

Warning Symbols
Warning symbols are a critical part of the safety systems for work sites. In logging, those symbols are on machines, in operator’s manuals, and on or near materials and tools used for the job. Workers should understand the nature of the hazard identified by the symbol. Training should help workers to identify and avoid hazards using personal protective equipment or proper work procedures. The following pages review the severity of hazards identified by warning symbols and the likely hazards on the landing. The landing diagrams have the warning symbol and the area where the hazard is most likely enclosed by the same line style. The box with the solid red line includes the entire landing area. Workers should use procedures and PPE that minimize hazard potential. Refer to operators manuals for specific hazard information and distances.

Los símbolos de advertencia son una parte crítica de los sistemas de seguridad para el lugar de trabajo. Safety Scenarios
Injuries may result because workers fail to recognize and avoid hazards. Recognition of hazards requires new workers to imagine the sequence of events when a hazard could result in an injury or fatality. An experienced worker can see these hazards and recognize the danger. The following scenarios describe hazards that result in serious injury or fatality. These scenarios are from real events documented in accident reports. For each scenario, the first page is the sequence of events that lead to the injury. Areas or objects are red when the potential for injury is high. The second page shows recognition of the hazards and work procedures that avoid injuries. Areas or objects are green when the potential for injury is low.
