ForewordDavid SmithChief ExecutiveEnergy Networks Association

Welcome to the 24th Energy Industry Safety, Health and Environment Conference. This year marks 10 years of ENA organising this conference on behalf of the energy industry and we are proud to support this show of commitment to what is such a vital part of delivering safe and secure energy.

The next couple of days promise to be another great opportunity to engage with industry colleagues and share experiences on many topics. We are committed to helping improve the health and safety of all who work in our industry and the environment we live in.

Last year we heard how safety was a ‘golden thread’ aligning the interests of employees and shareholders, and how improving safety and reducing injuries required a joint solution for the workforce and the company. These topics provided an excellent starting point for discussions around the 2013 theme for Powering Improvement - Human and Organisational Factors: Behavioural Safety and Personal Responsibility. These discussions continue over the next two days and are an important part of our ongoing efforts to improve health and safety.

This year’s conference will examine the significance of “behavioural safety”, including global best practice, as well as current industry issues both of conventional assets as well as addressing issues emerging as part of the drive for innovation on our networks.

So as always, please make the most of this valuable networking opportunity to share your thoughts, plans and innovative initiatives to achieve the vision of being a world leader in health and safety performance by 2015.

This conference is about sharing best practice and learning from industry experiences. We also want to inspire thoughtful discussion, so with this in mind you can follow ENA on Twitter (@EnergyNetworks) and we encourage you to use #SHE2013 to engage in the debate online.

Peter VujanicOperations SHE Manager, SSEPeter’s career can simply be summarised as having gone full circle: from poacher to gamekeeper and back again! Initially, he started his working life at South Western Electricity (more recently known as Western Power Distribution) as a Graduate Management Trainee. There he spent over a decade in numerous roles gaining experience in many electricity distribution disciplines such as construction, maintenance, commissioning, operations, policy, and project management at all voltages up to and including 132kV.

Following this, Peter then spent around 8 years in a regulatory enforcement environment; formerly at Department for Trade and Industry as a Senior Engineering Inspector and latterly at the Health & Safety Executive as a Principal Specialist Inspector (Electrical Networks). It was in these roles that Peter developed his keen interest in Health and Safety matters affecting the ESI. In early 2010, Peter realised that poaching had better long-term prospects and so jumped at the opportunity to return to the private sector. He is now Operations SHE Manager in the Group SHE team at SSE.
