safety for special work
TRANSCRIPT
MODULE 14- SPECIAL WORKSAFE COMPANY
WELDING - Technique used to bond materials to each other. uses heat. Special
safety measures.
- Risks:
Electrocution (Insulation, insulated gloves and a power supply with lower safety voltage)
Fire and explosion. Removing flammable material and, if necessary, cover the ground with fire-resistant material. Welding apron),
UV radiation (Welding mask, welding curtains appropriate, close-fitting work clothing)
Poisoning by welding smoke (good ventilation, extraction, if necessary: filtering mask or a breathing hood).
WELDING II- Autogenous welding: the heat is generated by a mix of flammable
gas (acetylene or propane) and oxygen.
- Areas clear and clean, screens and work permits.
- No flammable materials near the welding site. Fire extinguisher.
- Avoid welding in wet areas.
- Maintenance operations: switch-off.
- Special attention: welding at height and welding in confined spaces.
WELDING III• To avoid gas release : hose break protection (cuts off the feed
immediately).
• To avoid flash-back: flame damper (blocks backfire of the flame to the bottle).
• Welding glasses protect the eyes against radiation and against small glowing metal parts.
• Gloves, protective clothing, goggles, safety boots, noise protection, respiratory protection.
• To avoid welding fumes, the working area must be ventilated.
EXPLOSION-PRONE ENVIRONMENT
- Flammable liquids, gases, fumes or dust clouds are present.
- Clearly marked: warning sign.
- Explosion hazard zones: classified depending on the frequency and duration of the potentially explosive atmosphere. 2 main systems : EU and USA
- Written authorization. Use of an explosion meter. Supervision of the area.
- Equipment used: suitable for use in the explosion hazard zone.
EXCAVATIONS• Risks: flooding or collapsing, suffocation and intoxication
• Identifying power cable and other services run (plan of mains) and keep at least 0.5 metres from any power cable.
• Toothless bucket if you work with an excavator
• No unsupported excavations. Plant, equipment and people: safe distance (barriers). No gas cylinders in the excavation.
• Always at least two ladders to offer sufficient opportunity to escape. A deep excavation: confined space.
DEMOLITION WORKS
• Risks: working at height (danger of fall), unstable construction, falling demolition material, danger of collapse, release of dangerous substances like asbestos and quartz dust and noise.
• Work demolition plan. Securing openings, edge protection , safety nets and personal fall protection. Waste chute.
• PPE
• Inventory of the concentration of dangerous substances (asbestos).
