APPLICATIONOccupational protective footwear is classifi ed into types depending on the type of duties performed.

The parameters include: type of protective toecap, thickness and type of upper materials, and thickness and type of sole.

Special features such as chemical and molten metal resistant soles, penetration resistant midsoles & electrical conductive / antistatic properties are also available.

RISK ASSESSMENTFootwear types correctly assessed will ensure slips, trips and falls are avoided, & adequate impact protection will prevent crush injuries. Footwear must be performance based and risk assessment includes:

• Location eg. engineering workshop, equipment maintenance, laboratories, foundries, heavy machinery, geological / agricultural / engineering fi eld work, mining.

• Exposure to chemicals and the protection parameters of the sole material. Resistance to heat, molten metals, heated bitumen, sparks, hot metals and heated chemicals with quick release velcro fasteners for some applications.

• The need to stand or walking for long periods where support is essential.

• Water resistance and food/fat protection.

• Work with electricity where steel toe caps have restrictions, and height work on ladders and

SAFETYFOOTWEAR

1. Have footwear fi tted whilst standing and towards the end of the day.

2. Properly fi tted footwear shouldn’t need to be ‘broken in’.

3. A fi rm heel counter & deep heel seat holds the heel, preventing heel slip when walking.

4. The sole should only bend at the ball of the foot, not in the middle under the arch.

5. There should be little distortion when attempting to twist the footwear.

6. Socks manufactured from natural fi bres, preferably free of seams should be worn. All workers should be trained in the correct use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.

The main cause of foot and leg problems is ‘step shock’. The average worker takes 8000 steps per day, walks up to 24 kilometres and the feet can carry up to 3 times the wearer’s body weight on all types of surfaces. Combined with sole manufacturing technology, the main foot buffer is the inner-sole. Quality inner-soles should be included in comfort upgrades.
