Never Work Alone

• No student may work in the classroom without the instructor present.

Do not touch!• Do not handle the equipment until

the instructor has advised you to do so.

Perform authorized experiments only.

KEEP YOUR WORK AREA CLEAR

• Keep personal items not needed for an experiment away from the lab area.

• Keep aisles free of all obstructions.

KNOW YOUR SAFETY EQUIPMENT

• Goggles - for eye protection

• Eyewash station - for flushing of the eyes

• Fire blanket - for smothering clothing fires

• Fire extinguisher - for fires NOT on a person

Fire Drill Procedures• Turn power off.• Line up along the wall beneath the

clock. • Exit the building and walk across

the grass to the sidewalk. • Room 200 is the SECOND line.

ACT IN A RESPONSIBLE

MANNER AT ALL TIMES

• The laboratory is a work place.

• The laboratory is not a playroom.

• Horseplay will not be tolerated.

Chemical Waste• Some liquids may be put down the

drain in the front of the room.• Never pour chemicals in the

student sink.• Solid chemicals are disposed of in

separate waste containers.

If you use a chemical…• Remember to keep your hands

away from your face and wash your hands after use.

IMMEDIATE DANGERS WHEN

USING A CHEMICAL• Fires• Explosions• Irritations to the eyes or skin• Burns to the skin• Poisoning

Storage• Keep the storage areas closed at

all times.

Medical Conditions• Asthma• Allergies

Living Organisms• Remember: They are ALIVE and

they are NOT classroom toys. • This includes the plants, fish and

other living things that may be used in our classroom.

WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHING

• Loose fitting clothing or jewelry can get damaged by equipment, chemicals, or heating devices.

• Clothing damage may lead to bodily injury.

• Wear aprons to protect clothing when appropriate.

SPECIAL HAIR INSTRUCTIONS

• Tie back long hair when using heat, or equipment with gears or spinning parts.

• Hair preparations such as hairspray, gels, and mousse are often very flammable. Their use in a lab situation is discouraged.

CLEAN UP ALL SPILLS

• Tell your teacher what was spilled.• Clean up minor spills with paper

towels.• Clean up a solid spill with a broom

and dustpan and dispose of it where indicated by your teacher.

BROKEN GLASSWARE

• Inform the teacher of the break and get a replacement.

• Teacher must clean up broken glass. Broken glass is put into a separate container (not the trash).

• Never use chipped glassware.• Do not immerse hot glass into

water.

SPECIAL ELECTRICAL HAZARDS

• The biggest electrical hazard in laboratory situations is electrical shock.

• The human body is a good conductor of electricity.

• Report damaged equipment.

Heating• Keep hair away!• Watch sleeves!• DO NOT BURN STUFF!

Pay Attention• Do not leave any heating tools

unattended, EVER!• Never aim an open beaker or test

tube that is being heated at a person.

Heated Materials

• Never look into a test tube or beaker that is being heated.

• Always use safety materials when removing heated glass or other substances.

• Heated material (especially glass) can remain hot for a very long time.
