SPH and Mobility RevivalRegulating agencies have recently taken a stand against manual lifting and have promoted safe patient handling. • Of all industries the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety

and Health Administration (OSHA) targeted for development of an ergonomic guideline, the health care industry was the first to receive one.

• OSHA identified “manual” patient handling as the primary cause of musculoskeletal disorders among patient caregivers.

• The Joint Commission has instructed health care organizations to address ergonomic hazards related to patient handling by using lift equipment. “Environment of Care” standard .

• New York is in process of legislation. HR 2480 Nurse and Healthcare Worker Protection Act of 2013 (started in 2011)

2013 - Today….• Program revised, based on State guidelines- 2 chairs, myself and

Kevin Cerrone from PT, with front line staff as chairs also.• Active participation from Safety & Security, Biomed, Materials

Management, Infection Control and full Administrative support.• Feb 2014- at least 1 Hydraulic lift on each floor, slings par –

leveled!• Education roll-out 2015: SPH program presented at Nursing Team

Development Day and Educational Enrichment Day. • SPH involved in obtaining 1000lb lift for pt needing to come to

hospital.• Lateral transfer device to roll out this month- HoverMatt• New ED will have 5 ceiling lifts! 4 Trauma and 1 Barrier room• Director of Employee Safety & Prevention from system, Adrienne

Drohomirecky, came to our meeting, our program ahead and thorough- we could be a Best Practice hospital for the system!
