SmartCane™ is an electronic travel aid for persons with visual impairment. It fits on the top of a standard white cane. SmartCane™ warns the user about the presence of obstacles between knee and head height, which cannot be detected using a normal white cane.

SmartCane™ uses ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles within a distance of 3 metres and conveys information about the distance through distinct vibratory patterns. This enables users to negotiate obstacles safely without actually touching them or bumping into them. Thus unwanted contact is avoided. Injuries resulting from collisions with overhanging and protruding obstacles such as branches of trees, signboards, window-mounted air condi-tioners and coolers, and open windows and doors can be easily avoided.

SmartCane™ is easy to use. With basic training and orientation, any person with visual im-pairment who uses a white cane regularly can use SmartCane™ effectively. SmartCane™ facilitates safe, independent mobility with dignity.

Free self-learning resources for SmartCane™ are available in multiple regional and inter-national languages. These are supplied along with the device. They may be downloaded from www.smartcane.saksham.org. A Braille manual is available on request. Face-to-face training is provided by Saksham Trust and more than 50 partner organizations across In-dia and in many other countries.

SmartCane™ comes with a one-year warranty. Service assistance is available across India through a network of community partner organizations and in several other countries.
