SAFE EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP FORUM (SELF)08

About Tashkent

Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan and Central Asia's premier metropolis, betrays little of its 2,000-year history as a crossroads of ancient trade routes. The largest and one of the oldest cities of Central Asia, it is the economic heart of the region. Historically, Tashkent has remained active in the caravan trade between Central Asia and Russia and gained new prosperity with the construction (1898) of the Trans-Caspian RR. It is also a major cultural center, a rail and highway junction, and an important air terminal.

Tashkent or Toshkent, in the foothills of the Tian Shan mountains is also spelled Dashkent. This modern city of 2.5 million people holds many attractions from imposing squares, monumental architecture and fine museums, to the mud-brick maze of the old Uzbek town, autumn colors on dappled poplar lanes and the sweet spray of fountains. Tashkent is simply bursting with interesting museums, ancient historical sites, lush parks, and a diverse selection of high-quality restaurants, nightclubs and shops.Tashkent is a city which is famous for its exceptionally valuable architectural heritage. There are many interesting monuments which have been preserved from the Middle Ages as well as modern buildings which combine the latest architectural achievements with national style, local picturesque décor and Asian architectural traditions. The modern section of the city coexists with the old quarter (partly reconstructed), with its narrow, twisting streets, numerous mosques, and bazaars.

Present-day Tashkent is one of the most beautiful cities in Asia, and its architecture is unique; the hospitality and friendliness of Tashkent people is amazing. Tashkent lies right on the border with Kazakhstan and also is known as the main "gates of the Orient" on international air routes from India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China to Europe.

The average temperature in November is between 10C to 20C. Light winter clothing is therefore recommended.

Travel & Visa Information

Tashkent is served by Uzbek Airways with direct flights from Lahore, Amritsar, Delhi and Dubai.

All foreign nationals need visa support from one of the Travel Companies authorized by the National Tourism Company "Uzbektourism". Visa support application is submitted by the Travel Agency to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Tashkent. The approval period is about 7-10 working days. The approved visa support is faxed directly to the Embassy or Consulate of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the country where the traveler is receiving the visa. Visa can also be obtained from the Consular Missions of the Republic of Uzbekistan abroad. Visa for some persons can also be arranged at the Tashkent Airport for those persons who are arriving from the countries where the Republic of Uzbekistan does not have permanent diplomatic or consular missions.
