by Fred Spiewak, President Several Wisconsin hunting seasons have opened. On Saturday September 15th, I spent the morning bowhunting with the numerous mosquitoes in the woods. No deer were seen. I gave in to the mosquitoes after only two hours. No doubt the mosquito population is benefiting from all the rain we’ve had this Summer. What we really need is a hard frost and cooler days. There are new deer transport regulations to be aware of as the state grapples with containing the CWD problem. Be sure to read up on the new regulations before going afield. As I mentioned last time, I went Elk hunting for the third time. This trip was to Wyoming with Skyline Outfitters where I was guided by owner Shawn Fricke. On September 1st we saw elk in the morning, however, none of trophy quality. Traveling back out for the afternoon hunt I had the opportunity to shoot a coyote. He was close when we came over a rise. Shawn stopped him from running at about 120 yards with a shout. My offhand shot scored and we loaded him up for mounting later. Saturday afternoon we watched about 50 Elk including at least 15 bulls (none big enough) walk by at about 80 yards. Bulls were bugling and sparing with each other as the rut seems to have begun. Thankfully, the wind stayed in our face as we enjoyed the show. Sunday morning, there were family obligations to attend to when one of Shawn’s sons ended up in the hospital Saturday night. We were able to hunt Saturday evening. We watched the edge of a canyon at maybe 500 yards where elk were feeding in the shade. They made their way through the canyon with the wind in our faces and the sun on our backs. Maybe 60 elk including cows, calves, and immature bulls paraded toward a high meadow to feed. One of the last bulls gave us plenty of time to decide if he was the one. Last year, I put in a deposit with Skyline Outfitters for a 2020 Elk hunt and am very much looking forward to the event.
