Sadie’s CornerHappy Mother’s Day! Moms
–you love and cherish them whenyou’re little, you push them awayas a teenager, you ask their adviceas a young adult, and if you’relucky you become their friendwhen you’re older.
My mother taught me manythings growing up. Some of herphrases that I hear in my headtoday include, “Hold your headup high, be proud of who youare.” She said this routinelyaround school. Kids can be socruel to each other and I wouldcome home and feel so insecure. She’d shower me with love andthen tell me to hold my head uphigh. It made me feel strong. Mymom is a feminist and at no timegrowing up did this slip myattention. She’s a Gloria Steinemfan, she worked outside of thehome, and she taught me that agirl can do anything a boy can do– often better! My mom was alsoa homemaker and though she wasgone during the day, she cooked, cleaned, and did the groceryshopping; she did it all. I have myown family now and hardlybelieve how hard and long shemust have worked for our family. And like me learning from mymom, I am teaching my daughterthat she can be a bus driver, apilot, a ballerina, or anything else
she wants to be.Another phase I heard all the
time was, “Be kind to others, always.” This made mecompassionate. I learned to putmyself in other’s shoes and seethings from someone else’sperspective. Compassion lead toempathy which lead me to seniorliving. When I was 14, I wasworking the early shift in a bakeryand my customers were allresidents at the YMCA. They wereall retired and many had mildcognitive impairment. I learned tohelp people as a way of beingkind to others; I felt it was myduty to make their day brighter.Hearing my mom say, “Be kind toothers” encouraged me to behavewith compassion and integrity.
To all the moms out there, Isalute you – your job is neverending and thankless. But it is themost rewarding job I’ll ever have.

Mother’s Day MemoriesFrom Belmont Residents
By: Katrina B. and Therese F.This year on May 8th people all
over America celebrate the gift ofmothers. The history of Mother’sDay originated with a womannamed Anna Jarvis in 1908,following the death of hermother. She organized an eventon a Sunday at a Methodistchurch in West Virginia forfamilies to celebrate theirmothers. After its success shedecided to petition lawmakers toadd a day to the calendar devotedto honoring moms. She felt theexisting holidays were biasedtoward male achievements. Herpersistence paid off and in 1914President Woodrow Wilson signeda measure adopting the secondSunday in May as Mother’s Day.
We are grateful for her effortsand every May our special momsat Belmont Village receive calls, cards, flowers, candy, and visitsfrom their families. Our residentshave some fun insights to shareregarding their own belovedmatriarchs:
“My mother was more like anangel than a human being. Everylesson was taught with love. Shenever raised her voice.” - Resident,Lea D.
“She would always make hotcross buns, every Easter.”-Resident, Martha L.
“As a mother, I remember thefun days deployed in France and
watching my son become a man.”-Resident, Anita A.
“She gave great hugs and shewas always there when I washungry.” -Resident, Bill M.
“She passed away when I was10. But I remember she taught meright from wrong.”-Resident,Dora B.
“I played violin with anorchestra for many years. Mymother wasn’t able to attendmany performances, but Iremember one Christmas she wasthere in a beautiful red dress andmink stole with her makeup done(compliments of me). When Ilooked at her after the program Iremember knowing how proudshe was of me, and I rememberfeeling how proud I was of her.-Resident, Genevieve P.
“What I remember about beinga mother is that is was a lot ofFUN! We were blessed withextended family nearby and wemade some great memories.”-Resident, Carolyn G.
Jean B. and her daughter are agreat pair! Hope both of you have a

Nurse’s NoteOccupational Therapy MonthOccupational Therapy is
therapy based on performing themeaningful activities of dailyliving (self-care skills, education, work, and social skills), especiallyto enable or enhance participationin such activities despiteimpairments or limitations inphysical or mental functioning.
Older adults benefits fromoccupational therapy becausetheir goal is to assist withregaining or maintaining a level ofindependence that will allowthem to age in place for as long aspossible. Occupational therapyhas been proven effective forseniors living with variousmedical conditions or recoveringfrom surgery. In addition toworking with individuals toincrease strength or regainimportant life supporting skills, occupational therapists work
throughout the community, counseling families, localgovernments, and communitygroups to ensure that each isdoing what it can to help olderadults maintain theirindependence.
Belmont Village offers bothoccupational therapy and physicaltherapy services. Our WellnessCenter nurses work closely withour therapists to identify thoseresidents who would benefit fromthese therapies and contacts thefamilies and physicians tocoordinate care.

Neighborhood News
Neighborhood residents admiringthe Flower Fields.
This past month we did notreceive as many of the “AprilShowers” we needed or expected, but that is not going to stop the“May Flowers” from blooming inthe Neighborhood.
One fun and engaging activityresidents enjoy doing during thespring is getting their hands dirty! This month the NBH residentswill be taking a trip to BalboaPark’s Botanical Garden for someinspiration, as the residents willbe planting their own garden inthe NBH Courtyard. This activityallows those residents who enjoythe gardening a chance to beoutdoors during sunny days, providing great sensorystimulation. In addition, it willallow those who have nevergardened before a chance to learnsomething new; provide a sense ofownership and a sense offulfillment, as they see the firstflowers begin to blossom or thefirst tomatoes start to ripen. Comeby and view our garden!
Circle of FriendsOur Circle is growing! This
month in May you can expect tosee our Activities Assistant,Heather, lead a class of her own,as we are introducing a muchanticipated third group. Group 3will be meeting on the 3rd Floor;previously occupied by Group 1lead by Kathleen.
With this expansion of the COFprogram here at Cardiff, itprovides an optimal opportunityfor this new group to continuewith the activities that are tailoredand just right for each participant, addressing their abilities andneeds.
Collectively as a team, we arecurrently brainstorming on newinnovative and creative ideas forour activities and outings. In thepast I have been approached byfamilies with their suggestionsand input, and would like to takethis opportunity to include youall. Please let me know what yourlove ones’ favorite things do are, their hobbies, places they enjoyedfrequenting. Your input is mostwelcome and valued.
