Keep Celebrating! We celebrated Memorial Day in May then Flag Day in June. Now it’s time to celebrate the birth of our great nation on July 4th. We will be 239 years young! This year we at Saddle Oak Club will have an indoor “picnic style lunch” preceded by a decorated golf cart parade on Saturday, July 4th. So get out the red, white, and blue ribbon, sparkles, whirl-a-gigs, and flags to embellish those golf carts or bikes. Anything to show your patriotic spirit. Don’t forget to spruce up your own outfit; maybe a new shirt, hat, sunglasses or whole new outfit. The more red, white and blue we have the better.

Games are holding out strongly. Bocce ball and shuffleboard have moved to the evening hours due to the heat of the day. Come out and join your neighbors for a friendly game or two. Cards and BINGO are doing well also. Maybe the slower pace of summer would be a good time to learn a new game.

The pool and hot tub remain favorite places to gather. Got a new swim suit? Come show it off in the morning or evening. Being there all day could be too much for your precious skin.

As the temperature climbs, stay cool and pace your activities outside. Before you know it fall will be here and neighbors returning from vacations and/or visits with family.

Remember to smile. It may make your neighbors wonder what you’re up too. Don’t tell. Keep them guessing. Have a great summer.

FFRAN BOLSON

Having lived here for 25 years, Fran is honored in this issue to highlight her lengthy service over these many years to Saddle Oak. Her service began on the ground floor of Saddle Oak’s very inception, and she has chosen this month to hand over the reins. She moved here with her loving husband and childhood sweetheart, Philip, whom she met in 8th grade. As the years passed, they celebrated their 50th Anniversary here at the Clubhouse in 1997, with 160 people attending. Her list of achievements as a volunteer is extensive, and while we may have missed a few, you may be impressed with:

Fran began her SOC volunteer efforts as a newsletter carrier and by also serving on the Telephone Committee. She was the Newsletter editor for 10 years, and served on the Welcoming Committee for two. She served on the Board of Directors as Secretary for seven years, then three years as a Board member, including one year as President. Fran started the Water Exercise activity and was its leader for five years. And for 22 years she has kept the Event Board updated in the Clubhouse.

Quite an impressive resume, so far, but there is far, far more.

Fran taught Line Dancing for two years and Square Dancing for 15 years, with her husband Philip. They also opened and closed the Clubhouse for ten years.

For 10 years Fran coordinated bridge along with pinochle games for 20 years, has been the Sunshine Chairperson for 13 years, bowled for 25 years, planned Clubhouse socials with her husband, square dances, fashion shows, dinner and breakfast events and Saturday night dances. She was a member of the Glee Club and Drama Club, and enjoyed quilting and Brazilian embroidery here in SOC. Yet Fran still volunteers at West Marion Hospital two days a week at Reception and Patient Discharge. She finds personal time to walk two miles every day and has for 25 years, especially when she was preparing to run marathons which she began at age 69. She has over 80 medals! Fran has sung in her Church choir for 75 years, and is an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church.

Fran has also been Queen Mother of the Red Hat Society, which in Saddle Oak was much like our Ladies’ Luncheon. The ladies planned all types of fun things to do, including cruising. The Society is a light-hearted call for older women to have fun and to make up for all the years that they were serious, prim, and proper. The Society's full regalia was developed in credit to the depiction of an old woman who wears a purple dress with a red hat, and does not mind what others may think of her exuberant new lifestyle.

Fran, we fall short no matter how much Saddle Oak may applaud you for all your open-hearted volunteering over these many years. You have been a standard-bearer of the true spirit of volunteering. You brought so much vitality and enthusiasm to our neighborhood. And simply saying thank you, albeit sincere and profusely said, is simply not enough. You have not only created much of the history of Saddle Oak, but we as a community are all the richer for it. Enjoy your retirement and we hope you find and enjoy many more of life’s simple pleasures, all of which you so richly deserve. From all of us, Fran, we sincerely thank you.

NATIONAL LADIES ’ TOOLBELT MONTH

“I love working with my hands, especially

woodworking; it’s a hobby. And I have

the utility shed to prove it. I’ve built a shed

and bookcases”. She’s done a lot of work

on her home herself, too.

In addition, as a resident, you can see

Cindy on Crime Watch, helping with Bingo

Café, and volunteering as a summer

Bingo caller. She also enjoys taking her

miniature schnauzer, Gracie, to the dog

park. Cindy is high energy. When you

hear of SOCers kayaking, horseback

riding and zip lining, or doing anything

with an adrenaline rush – Cindy is right

there!! Would you expect any less from a

Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic

Association (PIAA) certified basketball

and softball official, whose background is

in accounting and computer science?

the DIYers craze, more women

are taking an interest. SOC has

a number of such women - one

Having grown tired of shoveling

Pennsylvania snow, and at the

encouragement of her friends,

Jim and ChandraMa Hanoian,

Cindy moved to Saddle Oak a

year ago and later joined the

Sun Communities staff as part-

time Maintenance Technician.

She says “I like working with

Brian. I learn a lot”.

Cindy’s interest in wanting to

do things with her hands began

when she was a little girl visiting

her grandparents in

Pennsylvania. Instead of going

into the kitchen with her

grandmom to cook, Cindy

would rather be with

“Grandpap” in his workshop

and work alongside him. This

is where her love of fixing and

making things began.

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War to honor Union soldiers killed in battle. Gen. James Garfield made the first speech at Arlington Nat’l Cemetery when 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers’ graves were decorated with fresh flowers, and inspired the poem “In Flanders Field”. Author Moina Michael wrote:

The Thursday night Quilters will continue to meet Thursday nights 6:30-8:30 during the summer. There will not be any formal classes. Come work on your project or a service project.

A Super Bingo is scheduled for Sunday, August 16, at 2:00 PM,with a lunch held prior at 12:30until 1:30.

This is my last Sunshine Report as I am retiring at the end of this month. I am happy to report that Erik and Nancy Hoiaas have volunteered to be the new Sunshine Chairpersons. Please call them at 509-7034 if you know of anyone in the hospital.

International Joke Day is celebrated on July 1. There's plenty of problems, trouble and unhappiness in the world. Don'tcha think the world would be a far better place if we'd all just chill out a little and laugh a whole lot more!? 'Ya never know. If people around the world get into the theme of the day, it just might

be the start of something great.

4 th of July is thebirthday of our nation. Thomas Jefferson is theauthor of the Declarationof Independence. It wasvoted on and approvedby Jefferson and otherdiscontented representatives from the thirteen colonies on July 4, 1776. The document declared freedom for the 13 colonies from British rule. It currently resides in the ExhibitionHall of the National Archive in Washington, D.C.

Did you know that the Declaration of Independence was not signed by all representatives until August, 1776? To make it official, John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, signed it. Now, can anyone guess where the saying "put your John Hancock on it" came from!?!

Today, we enjoy the benefits of the freedom which the framers signed and fought for. For us, it is a time for baseball, hot dogs, picnics and fireworks. (The fireworks were so that theKing could see them from across the Atlantic!) Summer is in full swing and life is good.

Cheer Up the Lonely Day is celebrated on July 11. It's an opportunity to make a lonely person happy. Any time you can make someone happy,you've done a good

thing and should be proud of yourself. It's easy to do. When you visit, bring happy thingsto talk about. Keep the conversation upbeat and lively. When you leave, give a big hug andlet them know you enjoyed the stay.

This day was created by a man named Francis Pesek, from Detriot, Michigan. His daughter said, "He was a quiet, kind, wonderful man who had a heart of gold. He got the idea as a way of promoting kindness toward others who were lonely or forgotten as shut-ins or in nursing homes with no relatives or friends to look in on them." Francis Pesek chose this day,because it was his birthday.

Take Your Pants for a WalkDay is celebrated on July 27.It is a great day to get someexercise. Its an easy day tocelebrate. Simply go for a walk.Unless you are wearing a dressor a skirt, you probably are wearing pants. So,by definition, as you walk, they come along.

Give your pants some exercise. After all, they are looking a little tight around the middle. The walk will do them good.
