SACTWU Worker Health Program

• SACTWU is the largest trade union organising clothing, textile, leather, footwear and retail workers in South Africa

• Understood to have the largest HIV/AIDS implementing program within organised labour internationally

• SACTWU Worker Health Program was started in 1998 as a worker education program and has evolved into a comprehensive program providing the full continuum of care including prevention programs; HCT; HIV & TB treatment; support and more recently male medical circumcision

SACTWU WORKER HEALTH PROGRAM

STATS 2011• 174 231 workers and 39 532 youth were reached through

workplace education covering HIV & AIDS; TB• 830 shop stewards were trained on HIV related topics including

COGP and OHS• 49 607 learners within communities in which members reside

attended plays conducted by our drama group• 669 357 male condoms and 53 148 female condoms were

distributed • 38 966 workers and their dependents received HCT• 864 members and dependants initiated onto ART • 443 workers received social worker support • 11 863 home based care visits were conducted• 100% TB treatment success rate• 296 factories signed up to implement TB Infection Control Plans• 6 140 male medical circumcisions conducted

ILO Recommendation 200

• Ensure coverage of prevention, treatment, care and support to all workers at all workplaces extending to workers’ families and their dependants

• Protect against discrimination in recruitment or continued employment as well as against termination of employment due to HIV and AIDS

• NO workplace HIV mandatory testing and disclosure

With Reservation……..

• Workplace interventions are not employer driven - strong emphasis placed on collaboration with workers and their representatives

• Monitoring and evaluation processes not an enabler for disclosure and breach of confidentiality

• The intervention is not employer window dressing for best practice interventions
