Easter Vigil Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help

After listening to Father Louis Kemayou's talk on penance and forgiveness, attendees spent time in discussion in small groups. Confessions followed the service.

Father Edward Patrick Lynch, CSsR, is the Redemptorist pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Christiansted. The last of the Redemptorist Order in residence in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Father Lynch is the superintendent of Catholic education, pastor of Holy Cross and St. Patrick Catholic churches and director of Respect Life Ministries.

St. Joseph Catholic High School:USVI Kidwind Challenge with a unique wind turbine design constructed of local Royal Palm Leaves

Two SJHS students, Euripide Carpio (Grade 12) and Jhaleek Christian (Grade 11) participated in the Annual USVI Kidwind Challenge. They submitted a wind turbine with a unique design constructed from the leaves of Royal Palm Trees found on the School Campus. After developing the wind turbine,they titled it “Project Palm Power” and packed it carefully for the trip to the event which was held at Sts. Peter and Paul School in St. Thomas. Their science coach was Bro. James Petrait, O.S.F.S. He was assisted by Mr. Richard Dorsey, an SJHS alumnus. The Annual USVI Kidwind Challenge is sponsored by the Virgin Islands Energy Office.

Funeral of Deacon Austin Medina: Deacon Austin Medina was laid to rest on Thursday, April 7, 2016. A funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Church. He was buried at Eastern Cemetery in Smith Bay. Most Rev. Herbert Bevard, bishop of the Diocese of the Virgin Islands, presided. Father Anthony Abraham delivered the homily. Other priests in attendance included Msgr. Catholic Charities Board MeetingMembers met to draw up initial plans for improving the diocese's ability to house and care for the homeless. Other topics of discussion: the identification of the Catholic Foundation of the Virgin Islands’ Board of Directors nominees and mission, and the ways and means of applying the Bishop’s Appeal 2016 funds to further our Catholic mission in the Virgin Islands.

Her lifeBorn in Canton, Ohio,

to a troubled family, Rita Rizzo overcame many obstacles in founding not only two religious orders, but the world’s largest religious broadcast and publishing network. She attributed her vocation to a miraculous healing for constant stomach pain when she was a teenager.

A local Canton healer advised Rita to pray a novena to St. Thérèse of Lisieux. After praying for nine days, the teenage Rita's stomach pains disappeared.

“That was the day I became aware of God’s love for me, and began to thirst for him,” she said in a 2001 National Catholic Register interview. “All I wanted to do after my healing was give myself to Jesus.”

Rita entered the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration in Cleveland on Aug. 15, 1944, when she was 21, and took the name by which she would become known throughout the world: Sister Mary Angelica of the Annunciation.

Another health challenge spurred Mother Angelica’s move to the South. While she was scrubbing a floor in her Ohio convent, the floor scrubber threw her against a wall, badly injuring her back. After two years of pain, she prayed to God again, promising to build a monastery. On Feb. 3, 1961, after various medical problems and potential roadblocks, and with the approval of Archbishop Thomas Toolen of Mobile-Birmingham, Rome granted Sister Mary Angelica permission for the Alabama foundation, Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, in Irondale, Ala. At the time, the Catholic population of the region was only 2 percent.

Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation died on Easter Sunday

following a lengthy illness. She was 92. A member of the Poor Clare

congregation, Mother Angelica is best remembered as the foundress of the

EWTN media conglomerate.

In 1969, she began recording spiritual talks on audio for mass distribution. She recorded her first radio programs in 1971, 10-minute programs for WBRC, according to her biography, Mother Angelica: The Remarkable Story of a Nun, Her Nerve and a Network of Miracles. Seven years later, she entered into television programming, producing half-hour programs called “Our Hermitage.”

A dispute over a blasphemous movie that was to be broadcast by the secular station where she recorded her programs prompted Mother Angelica to build her own station. With the sisters of her congregation, she turned the garage on the property into a studio. That was the launch of Eternal Word Television Network, on the feast of the Assumption, Aug. 15, 1981.

In 2000, Mother Angelica stepped down from control of EWTN. In the fall of 2001, she suffered a series of devastating strokes, which left her partially paralyzed and impaired her speech. In December of that year, she stopped hosting programs. In 2003, she taped a program praying the rosary with the nuns that is still broadcast regularly by the network.

Mother Angelica remained at the monastery during her illness and participated in the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament daily at the shrine.

Her legacyIn addition to the extraordinary reach of EWTN

media, Mother Angelica is remembered as a builder of religious communities. Mother’s order, the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, which began in Irondale with five nuns, moved and expanded in 1999 to the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Ala. The Poor Clares also expanded to new houses in Texas and Arizona. The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, like EWTN, continues to draw thousands of visitors annually. In November 2015, the Hanceville community grew with the arrival of nuns from St. Joseph Adoration Monastery of Charlotte, N.C., which was merged with Our Lady of the Angels.

In addition, she founded a men’s religious community, the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word. Currently, there are 15 friars in the community. The friars are largely involved in EWTN’s apostolate.

Mother Angelica also played a larger role in evangelizing and catechizing hundreds of thousands through EWTN’s programming, always remaining true to Catholic tradition and the magisterium. The communication of that tradition in modern, multi-media format is also part of her legacy. She was the first woman in the history of broadcast to found and lead a network for more than 20 years.

During his days, Peter

Laurencin works for the

Virgin Islands National Park,

surrounded by the natural beauty

of the park on St. John. But even

more than the lush hills and scenic

views, Peter has been drawn to

the beauty of the Catholic faith

and is preparing to be ordained a

permanent deacon this year.

“It’s a big step, becoming a deacon,” he said. Many things in Peter’s life had led him to this point, and the seeds of a strong faith were planted in his childhood.

“My grandfather was a good influence on my faith,” Peter said. “I grew up with my grandfather taking care of me because my mother was in the city, making a living. He took us to church, every week, Sunday after Sunday, no matter what.”

One of Peter’s most powerful memories was witnessing the healing of his teacher at a mission. “It was 1976,” he said, “and she was crippled, in a wheelchair, and I remember she was healed and came out of the chair and walked.” Peter became

drawn to the Catholic charismatic movement after that experience, and the memory of that day would stay with him for a long time. He was thirteen years old when he left St. Lucia moved to St. John and began attending Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church. Peter had been an altar server and continued that work in his new parish.

As Peter grew he continued to attend church, and though he fell away for a short time in his teens he came back. As he became older his interest and involvement was noticed by the priests who served at Mt. Carmel, and they encouraged him to reach out and learn more about his faith. “I went to a Catholic Studies program in Louisiana,” Peter said. “I learned a lot there, and came back with this djembe drum. I just started playing the drum in the church – it makes such a dramatic sound. Because… you come to church and sometimes you feel like the church is not alive.” Influenced by the charismatic movement, Peter was drawn to a more energetic type of worship.

During this time Peter met his wife, got married, and continued to be a part of the parish life. After going on mission trips and taking chances to study more about the Catholic faith, it was becoming clear that Peter might have a vocation to serve the church in a more committed way. Monsignor Antonio Verzosa was the first priest to encourage Peter to consider becoming a deacon, but he certainly wasn’t the last. “He called our bishop and said, ‘I need to have a deacon, and I think Peter would be a good candidate.’ So the Bishop told me and asked me to start thinking about it, pray about it, and see,” Peter recalled. “One time Monsignor Michael Kosak came up and said, ‘Hey, I think you should consider yourself for a

deacon.’ Anytime Msgr. Kosak said something, believe me, it gives you that feeling!”

After prayerful reflection Peter said yes to the invitation, and began the classes. His wife and children were supportive. Now he’s preparing for his final steps in the process: the ordination and assignment to serve the Church. “It’s a great journey,” Peter said. He continues to work together with the other men who came through the process with him, and he is looking ahead to serving in the church and helping others to know God in a powerful way. Peter is excited to take part in the full duties of a Deacon, which include assisting at the Holy Mass, presiding at the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Matrimony, and ministering to

the sick and elderly. He also holds a special place for praise and worship and the new ways his vocation will allow him to explore that. "I’m [also] looking forward to prayer ministry," he said. The vocation to the Permanent Diaconate, he knows, will be demanding but ultimately fulfilling. "It takes a lot out of you because you are constantly in the church, you’re constantly praying, you’re constantly with other people. [But] It’s a good thing ... because with God, everything is fine!”

Anniversary of St. Patrick Catholic School St. Patrick Catholic School (SPCS) is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding date of the school starting this June. We are planning events such as a welcome reception, a gala at Fort Frederick, school tours and more. This celebration is a big part about our alumnae reconnection program which means we need the community's help! We are asking the community to please send any interesting stories or remarks, original photos (with names on back — we will return once scanned), digital photos and any SPCS memorabilia (uniforms, athletic gear, documents, "artifacts") that they would not mind having on loan to us either by email to [email protected] or mail to:

Adult EducationThe St. Patrick Alumni Association offers an After School Tutorial Program, which is coordinated by Sister Claina Letang, ICM. They are now also operating as a Public Computer Center, which is part of the ViNGN Digital Literacy Program. It is open to the public during scheduled mornings to mid-day.

Bible StudyHoly Cross Church hosts Bible studies in McAlpin Hall on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9 a.m., following morning Mass.

Carmelite SpiritualityThe Our Lady Star of the Sea Community shares Carmelite spirituality in the St. Joseph Church Hospitality Lounge and Learning Center on the fourth Sunday of each month at 1 p.m.

Charismatic Prayer▶ St. Patrick Church has charismatic

prayer in the chapel on the third Friday of each month at 6 p.m.

▶ St. Ann Church has charismatic prayer in Marian Hall on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

Cursillo Prayer Group The Cursillo movement hosts a Spanish prayer meeting in the St. Michael Chapel at St. Joseph Church on the last Monday of every month at 7 p.m.

Devotions to St. Gerard MajellaEvery Tuesday after the 6:30 and 8:15 Masses.

Cursillo UltreyaCursillo members meet for Ultreya in the Cursillo office at St. Joseph Church on Thursdays after the 7 p.m. Mass. Meetings are in Spanish.

Divine Mercy ChapletSt. Joseph Church hosts Divine Mercy devotions on the fourth Sunday of each month at 3 p.m. The hour-long program includes the chaplet, prayers, adoration and teachings of the Divine Mercy by Father John Mark.

Franciscan SpiritualityThe Our Lady of the Angels fraternity of the Third Order of St. Francis shares Franciscan spirituality at Franciscan House on the fourth Sunday of each month at 3 p.m.

Rosary Prayer GroupCenacle of Our Lady of the Rosary Prayer Group meets at the Franciscan House every Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Holy Hours/Eucharistic AdorationAll day adoration every Thursday from after the 8:15 a.m. Mass until 6 p.m.
