Holy Week 23 March 2016

This week we celebrate the most important time in the Catholic calendar - HOLY WEEK. It is the week leading up to Easter Sunday where we commemorate the last days of Jesus‘ life.

Palm Sunday – the Sunday before Easter when Jesus triumphantly arrived in Jerusalem for the Jewish Passover. Great crowds of people gathered, waving palm branches to welcome him. We also receive palm branches at mass on Palm Sunday. The leftover palms are burnt to make ashes for the following years‘ Ash Wednesday mass.

Holy or Maundy Thursday – the day of The Last Supper and Judas‘ betrayal. This is where Jesus shared the bread and wine with his disciples. We remember this meal at every mass we celebrate. During the Last Supper Jesus washed the feet of his disciples as a sign of…

Good Friday – the arrest, trial, crucifixion, death and burial of Jesus. Jesus was arrested and tried in a mock trial. He was handed over to the Roman soldiers to be beaten and flogged with whips. He was made to wear a crown of long, sharp thorns that was thrust upon his head. Jesus was made to carry his own cross before being nailed to it. According to the bi-ble, Jesus died at 3pm on Good Friday.

Holy Saturday – the last day before Easter Sunday where Jesus was laid in the tomb. In the early church, this was a day of fasting in preparation for Jesus‘ resurrection.

Easter Sunday – the oldest and most important day in the church calendar where Jesus rose from the dead and gave us the promise of eternal life. His friends and family arrived at the tomb where his body had been placed and found that it was missing. He had risen to heaven!

Why Do We Celebrate Easter? We celebrate Easter to remember the great sacrifice that Jesus made for us in order to save us from the sins we commit so we can go to heaven. More im-portantly Easter Sunday helps us to remember that Jesus came back from the dead. Although he is not physically among us, He is still present in our hearts.

Year 6 Leadership Camp

The Year 6 students are to be congratulated on their maturity and behaviour while at camp at Woodman Point. The feedback from teachers has been that the students have focussed on the leadership qualities that as young adults, they will require to act as capable citizens in our community – both the school and general com-munity. Qualities such as good communication skills, teamwork, negotiation and compromise, persistence, determination and problem solving. Parents of these students should be proud of their efforts. Thank you to the Year 6 teachers, Donna Bathols and Shane Landers for their organisation of the camp. Thank you also to the following staff who assisted on camp: Mr Brendon Burke, Mr Graham Maher, Mrs Margaret O‘Neill, Mrs Car-olyn Hambley and Miss Silvana Sciarrone.

Interschool Swimming Carnival

Our interschool swimming team has trained very hard over the past few weeks in preparation for the carnival which will be held on Wednesday 30 March. PLEASE ensure your child is well prepared for the day with all required items packed and labelled. We are not at school for the two days before the carnival and cannot re-mind children!

Woolworths Earn and Learn

Thank you to all parents who contributed to the 2015 school Woolworths Earn and Learn tally. We were very fortunate to have been able to order a large number of educational resources and board games which have been distributed to the library and Early Years classrooms. Your children will definitely enjoy these new re-sources!

Vanessa Alaniz Assistant Principal

What happens in the Church after the Holy Thursday Mass of the Last Supper?

After this service, the altar is stripped. All statues are covered, the Holy Water fonts are emptied and the sanc-tuary light (red light) is extinguished. This is a reminder that Jesus has been taken away and is no longer pre-sent just like when the soldiers arrested Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and took Him away.

During this time, a special altar called 'The Altar of Repose' is set up in a special location for those wishing to pray, reflect and pay respect to Jesus who gave His life for us. This often goes all night.

What is the Service of Light?

The service of light takes place on Easter Vigil (Saturday) and is the biggest feast of the whole year. Members of the congregation each have candles which they will light from the Christ/Paschal Candle (Easter Candle) and pass on to one another. This represents the Light of Jesus entering our lives and quickly spreading throughout the whole Church. Jesus is like a light. He helps us to see when we make wrong choices. He shows us the right way. He guides us. You may have noticed that the 'Gloria' was not sung at all during Lent. This prayer will make its return at this Mass as the bells are rung vigorously to remind us that Jesus has risen. It is a time

for celebration!

THE CURRICULUM CORNER

High levels of efficiency, speed and accuracy in mental computation remains the goal. The path to computa-

tional fluency is not a straight forward one for many students. Prolonged, repetitive practice is the key to

success.

‘Near Doubles strategy’

Once students have the knowledge of ‗doubles‘ the natural progression is to near doubles. If a student

knows 5 + 5 = 10, they can solve 5 + 6 +11 ie 5+5+1 = 11, or 4+5 can be solved by 4+4+1.

If you know 6+6 then you know 6+7, if you know 8+8 you know 8+9, if you know 10+10, you know 10+11.
