“We extend our sincere thanks to the Sacred Heart School community for the tremendous support they have given to the Vinnies Christmas Appeal 2017. Our task of helping the needy would not be possible without the generous donations from all the classes at Sacred Heart School, With so many families experiencing hardship and finding it hard to make ends meet, it’s heartening to see everyone pitching in to help.

Once again we will be providing gift vouchers, presents and festive food items to help bring a little cheer to those less fortunate than us on Christmas Day.

Many thanks to the children and their parents for making this happen”.

To the Students and Families of Year 4W,

Thank you, students, for being a fantastic group of young people at Sacred Heart. I have enjoyed my involvement with you. I have enjoyed how different you all are and yet you are particularly passionate about helping out and looking after one another.

Fantastic year groups generally mean fantastic parent support. My Year 4W parent group has been terrific with its involvement in and support of in excursions, class events (such as First Holy Communion, assembly and class speeches) and various school events. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

Kids, take care of your parent(s) these holidays by helping out and not being de-manding. Your ‘olds’ have looked after you and supported you in your short lives so far!

I sincerely wish all the 4W students and families a sacred and happy Christmas. The Year Five classrooms you will be attending will be lucky to have such quality young students ‘on board’ next year. Kaylee, good luck at your new school. The Sacred Heart community will miss you and your family!

Cheers

Mr Milne.

PRINCIPAL’S 2017 ANNUAL COMMUNITY MEETING ADDRESS

In my address this evening, I will speak about the school’s achievements in 2017 and outline our intentions and annual school improvement plan foci for 2018. I will do this under the Catholic education of Western Australia acro-nym of LEAD, learning, engagement, accountability and discipleship. LEARNING Educating the whole child and improving student outcomes for each individual child is our core business at Sacred Heart. Our focus this year has been to provide a consistent school wide approach to the teaching of literacy and numeracy and lift each child’s performance through quality teaching. We have focused particularly on reading and writing in 2017; principally on more fully utilising individual student data to improve academic achievement. We have set high achievements targets for reading for all cohorts of children across the school and have monitored and evaluated this data to inform teaching and learning. Similarly, we have introduced and have been using the program Brightpath to moderate children’s writing, with an aim to continuously improve it, across the school. The work in both these areas is tireless and will continue into 2018. The following table shows the percentage of students at or above the national minimum standard in the NAPLAN assessments for 2017.

In Year Three this year, 100% of children in Spelling, 98% in Writing, 95% in Reading, 97% in Grammar and Punc-tuation and 100% of children in Numeracy were at or above the National Minimum Standard. In Year Five, 92% of children in Spelling, 96% in Writing, 98% in Reading, 90% in Grammar and Punctuation and 98% of children in Numeracy were at or above the National Minimum Standard.

One of the very important pieces of data we gain from the NAPLAN assessments is the student data over time. This

shows the rate of improvement for each individual student, and their cohorts as they progress through primary

school. It is important to note that, whilst our data is very high in relation to other schools, we need to continue to

explicitly personalise the learning for each individual student in order for them to reach their full potential.

In 2018, our focus will continue to be implementing a consistent and school wide approach to the teaching of litera-cy. This will involve ensuring consistent explicit pedagogical teaching practices, learning structures and curriculum processes are put into place and that these have a measurable impact on student achievement. There will be a fo-cus on making learning even more individualised and personalised. In addition, in order to address children not making appropriate progress, a case conference model will be implemented to assist teachers to address specific learning needs of individual children. Our staff work tirelessly and collaboratively every week in professional devel-opment sessions to improve our practice to provide an outstanding education for the children at Sacred Heart. I especially acknowledge Mrs Emanuela Fragapane who, in her role as Curriculum Co-ordinator, oversees these pro-cesses and whole staff development. Sacred Heart continues to look at ways in which we can further enhance the quality and standard of education through the use of technology. While most of us grew up with education support in the form of books and encyclo-paedias, today’s children are growing up in a world where technology is a part of life and will form not only an im-portant part of their education, but will inevitably be an important part of their future careers. The integration of ICT into the curriculum will be a focus for the 2018 school year. From 2018 , the school will introduce a one-to-one iPad program in Year Four (school funded in 2018 and parent funded from 2019 onwards) and build that slowly to Year Five and Year Six by 2021. This program will enhance our student’s opportunities for learning as well as pre-paring them for 21st-century education. As part of our mission in this area, we endeavour to provide our staff and students with the skills, tools and mindset to achieve success in a rapidly changing technological and information

rich world. By integrating information and communication technologies into all areas of the West Australian curriculum, we aim to provide powerful and effective tools to engage students, empower teachers and involve parents in developing lifelong learners of the 21st-century. In order to ensure the integration of iPads into the curriculum is improving motivation, engagement and teach-ing and learning practices, we will be working with a digital literacy coach and external ICT integration coach, Mrs Jenny Jongste. Jenny will be working alongside individual staff on a weekly basis to challenge and support the integration of ICT into the curriculum. Furthermore, Mr Shane Landers, as the Digital Transformational Coach at Sacred Heart will be released two days a week to model exemplary practices in classrooms with staff. Our parents will be part of this journey too. We will offer our parents opportunities to learn with us on the journey by holding regular parent evenings, open days in classrooms and inviting you to digital showcases throughout the year. In addition, each class will be using the parent communication app Seesaw next year as our major form of communication. This very powerful app allows you a great insight and immediate feedback into what your child is doing on a daily basis. This is a very exciting initiative for Sacred Heart and I look for-ward to working alongside our parents and students next year. In 2018, we are very excited to announce we will be introducing STEAM as a specialist subject. This will re-place our computer specialist, as ICT will now be accessible at our children’s fingertips throughout the day in each of our classrooms. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) allows our children to utilise these different subject areas and learn through inquiry and discovery in order to ensure our students are well placed to develop as 21st-century citizens. The introduction of this program will also complement Little Scientist, the ELLA Program (Early Learning Languages Australia) and our specialised science classes. In Religious Education, we continue to give particular focus to the teaching and knowledge about our Catholic faith and traditions. This focus is coupled with the faith development experiences we provide for our children throughout the year. As in previous years, our Year Three and Five students sat the Archbishop’s Religious Literacy tests. It is clearly evident from these assessments that children who are active in the practice of their faith and have good literacy skills are the students who perform well on these tests. The tests reflect the pro-gressive nature of the K-12 Religious Education curriculum and is comprised of multiple choice, short answer and extended response questions. This year 50% of Year 3 students and 39% of Year 5 students received scores above the Catholic school mean from across the state. ENGAGEMENT Our school logo reflects the unity of family and school where students, parents and staff come together in har-mony for a common purpose. The many community events this year have given families many opportunities to build connections with each other. To the many parents who actively contribute on a daily basis a huge thank you. Whether it is helping at home, in the classroom or supporting the P&F or School Board endeavours, this demonstrates to your children the importance you place on their learning. The energy and common focus that exists within these service groups to the school ensures that our sense of community will continue to grow and prosper into the future. I would like to acknowledge the work of the P&F this year. They have worked hard to develop social activities to enhance community spirit and engage with families in our school. The P&F have had an incredible year with magnificent events such as Evening on the Green, Bogan Bingo, school disco, casino lunch, sausage sizzle, Mother and Fathers’ day stalls and Easter raffles. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the P&F com-mittee for their outstanding efforts this year. It has been an absolute delight to work with a dedicated and fun filled group of people. I would especially like to mention and thank Ros Carroll for her outstanding leadership and love of all things Sacred Heart, Katherine Agostino for her fastidious work as Treasurer and Rebecca Blackman, our very competent Secretary. I acknowledge our Child Care staff both in the Early Learning Centre and Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) for their enthusiasm, energy and passion in the provision of these ‘one stop’ services to the school community. Both centres continually strive to provide a rich environment for your children. Our Year Six students have, through Year Six Ministries, embraced every opportunity to enhance and build their leadership skills and have contributed enthusiastically to all aspects of school life. I am especially proud of these wonderful role models as they have consistently demonstrated the significance of being a Sacred Heart student. I wish them well as they move on to High School.

Page 9: Sacred Heart School From “theshthorn.wa.edu.au/images/content/newsletters/Christmas2017.pdf · To those families who are leaving Sacred Heart, I wish you all the best for the future

The focus on mental health and well-being has continued, under the wellness banner in 2017. Staff have com-pleted additional Kids Matter in-servicing, with the aid of an ‘Action Team’ in the development of mental wellbe-ing at our school using the Kids Matter framework. Various sporting tournaments continued this year involving students from Year Four to Six, staff and parents. The addition of Ms Frances Mercer, our Chaplaincy Worker, continues to reap important mental health and well-being benefits for our school community. This role has had a positive influence on enhancing ‘mindfulness’ for students, staff and parents. I am pleased l to say that Frances will be with us again next year. In addition, Mrs Mercer, a provisionally registered psychologist, will work one day a week as the Sacred Heart Educational Psy-chologist; a role that will have transformational effects for some of our students. Finally in this area, I would like to acknowledge the work of Mrs Hannah Higgins, our Aboriginal Teacher Assis-tant, for her role in engaging and assisting our families. Mrs Higgins has played an integral role in the well-being of students and families across our school. In addition, the school held its very first NAIDOC Day this year and it was an outstanding success. Similarly, our families continue to be engaged in our school with the introduction of our Mothers’ Day morning tea and the largest attendance thus far to our Fathers’ Day Breakfast. ACCOUNTABILITY Our focus area of accountability has been dominated by a number of projects this year including: External painting of the whole school The installation of safety fences around the school to provide further security and a greater sense of well-

being for our students and staff. The upgrade of the electrical box in the hall The replacement of school switches on our computer network A comprehensive improvement of the stormwater drainage under our car park, a shared expense with the

parish. The completion of the installation of interactive TV screens to the junior primary, care of our Parents &

Friends Association. A refurbishment of the school library, transforming it into a 21st-century contemporary learning Hub. I

acknowledge the school board and P&F in this important project. The installation of a further lighting tower on the oval, again funded by our Parents & Friends Association. Replacement of the library photocopier The introduction of a code of conduct for all across the school that describes the minimum standard of

behaviour and decision-making to ensure the safety and well-being of all of our students. This has been well received by the community.

I would like to thank all the members of the school board for their dedicated commitment to the financial man-agement of our school. I would particularly like to thank Mrs Kimberly Brosztl for her excellent chairperson ship and unwavering support, and Mr Tim Carroll for his watchful scrutiny of our financial reports. It has been an ab-solute pleasure working with such a dedicated group of people this year. I look forward to continuing our robust conversations as we journey together to ensure Sacred Heart continues to be the school of choice. The Outside School Hours Care service underwent their assessment and rating this year and the service re-ceived meeting quality standard in all seven rating areas. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the employees in the service, led by Chloe Bennett and I thank them for their efforts. I congratulate them on the outstanding program they run and for their continuous dedication to improve our service. 2018 sees an expansion and realignment of the Extended Leadership Team. Structures and processes have been put into place to ensure that teaching and learning remains at the heart of all that we do and the extended leadership team will reflect this unwavering focus. The current roles have been reworked to allow for a more seamless focus on teaching and learning. This allows the school to more expertly build capacity in our leaders according to our core business; educating children and improving student outcomes. In 2018, the Extended Leadership Team will consist of five school leaders, plus the Principal and Assistant Principal. These leaders are:

The school will also undergo an enormous change in our accounting system next year, moving from a cash to ac-crual system. We will also fully integrate Leading Lights, a Catholic education of Western Australia technology initi-ative, across the school. A very comprehensive information and communication technology plan has been designed and the first stage of implementation is underway; this being the school funded one-to-one program for 2018. The plan aims to focus on the incorporation of 21st-century learning into the school with a two pronged focus of pedagogy (this being staff training and capacity building) and infrastructure. The implementation of this plan will involve moving to-wards a one-to-one iPad program for children in Years 4 to 6 and a 1:2 model for Years 1-3 by 2020. In addition, kindergarten and pre-primary will utilise a small bank of iPads in their learning centres. I would like to acknowledge the work and support of Mr Maher in this area. DISCIPLESHIP We are blessed with a strong connection to the parish and work closely with catechists in the delivery of parish based, school supported and family focused sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. I thank Monsignor Tim and Father Tom for their strong presence within the school and in the lives of the students. We are blessed to have an incredibly thriving Catholic community and parish and it is a delight to work in a school and community where faith is truly alive and nourished. Reaching out to those in our community teaches students about the Social Justice issues that exist in today’s world and giving to those who are less fortunate is part of that to which we are called as Catholic people. In 2017 each term provided opportunity for students to reach out to others: In Term One, we had our annual Walkathon, organised by Mr Andrew Milne, where students raised money

for Caritas and Sister Margie In Term Two, money raised from our Sacred Heart Day celebrations were sent to Caritas, Catholic Missions

and the Loreto sisters Term Three, students from Year 6 made school bags for Jesus for those in need. And Term Four, St Vinnies Bringing the school vision to life for the school community has been a major focus this year and I thank Mr Gra-ham Maher in his role as Faith Co-ordinator for developing procedures to help make reverence and respect para-mount. In 2018, staff are taking part in a two-day retreat in Safety Bay where we can individually and collectively nourish our faith and continue to grow as faith filled educators in a Catholic school. Staffing A number of our staff are leaving Sacred Heart at the end of the year and spreading their wings. Miss Lauren De Sousa joined our staff for six months taking over from Mrs Cannell when she went on long service leave. I would like to thank Lauren for her contribution to Sacred Heart; your efforts are greatly appreciated. Miss Rachel Cuccovia has taught at Sacred Heart for the last four years and has been a valuable member of the early childhood team. I sincerely thank Rachel for her contribution and dedication to educating our students. Ra-chel has been appointed to Salvado College for 2018 and we wish her all the best. Ms Kahlene Robinson, Kindergarten Education Assistant, will also take up an appointment at Salvado College in Byford. Kahlene has recently relocated to Pinjarra with her family and the move to Salvado sees her drastically reduce her travelling time. Kahlene, we thank you for your contribution to Sacred Heart; you will be missed by our community. Mrs Donna Bathols has been teaching at Sacred Heart for nine years. Donna started out teaching music and choir and has since taught in year four and year six. Donna has been appointed as teacher at Hammond Park Catholic Primary School; a role I know she will thrive in. Donna has been instrumental in introducing the Sacred Heart sus-tainability initiatives and has been an integral part of the Extended Leadership Team. Donna, I sincerely thank you for your contribution to the school and for the lives you have touched over your nine years as teacher. I wish you every success at Hammond Park. Bernie Halliday has been a staff member at Sacred Heart for 22 years and holds much of the history and traditions of our school in her heart. Bernie has survived five principals in her time at Sacred Heart as Library Technician and has seen the school transform in incredible ways. Bernie, on behalf of the community I thank you for the extraor-dinary gift of yourself to the staff, students and parents at Sacred Heart. You are a valued member of our commu-nity and we will miss you deeply. Thank you for your incredible contribution.

Margaret Green, has been at Sacred Heart for 25 years. It is virtually unheard of to stay in the same industry for 25 years, let alone work at the same school. Margaret has woven herself into the deep history and fibre of our school and holds much of its richness in her heart and in her memories. When asking about Margaret, she was described to me as passionate and caring. She was also known for always putting the children first and speaking her mind to ensure that this was the case. On behalf of the community, I would like to acknowledge the incredible contribution of Margaret Green to Sacred Heart. Finally, at the end of the year we farewell Monsignor Tim as he retires as our parish priest. Monsignor Tim has been the parish priest at Sacred Heart for almost 11 years. Our formal farewell for Tim will occur at the Thanks-giving Mass, however this evening, and on behalf of the whole community I would like to thank Monsignor Tim for his active involvement in the school, for bringing the human face of Christ to our children in all his interactions with them and his overall outstanding pastoral leadership of our community. We wish you God’s blessing in retire-ment and hope you will visit us often. Please join me in thanking Father Tim. In 2018, we welcome Miss Kate Masiello to Sacred Heart. Kate is an innovative teacher with experience and knowledge of best practice integration of ICT into the curriculum. We warmly welcome Kate to our school. Thank you and acknowledgements It has been my absolute pleasure to work with a team of wonderful people at Sacred Heart this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for their dedication, unwavering commitment and support. Each one of them works tirelessly to improve the outcomes of each student in our school. The love of their job, loyalty to the students in their care and positive attitude is to be commended. I would like to acknowledge a hard-working office staff, Jill Hall, Margaret O’Neill, Chloe O’Leary and Geraldine Steen, who are the face of our school. Your warmth, sense of humour and dedication to your work is admired by many. I thank you for your incredible support this year. As Principal, I’ve had the privilege of working with a number of wonderfully dedicated members of staff who have taken a leadership position this year. We are blessed to be in the fortunate position of growing capable, strong and resolute leaders who will lead our school and system for many years to come. I thank and acknowledge Vanessa Alaniz & Anita McArdle for their support as Assistant Principals and the members of our Extended Lead-ership Team; Emanuela Fragapane, Graham Maher, Donna Bathols and Shane Landers. I thank Vince Lambertini for his upkeep of the school grounds and his willingness to go above and beyond in his work on a daily basis. I have asked many things of Vince this year and he has always kindly obliged. I would also like to thank Dawn Barker for her work in volunteering every week to run our uniform shop. Your efforts and love of our school are greatly appreciated. In conclusion, I thank the children of the school for the wonderful life they bring to our workplace. Sacred Heart is a wonderful school. It is a place of hard work, much growth and development, great fun and energy. It is also a privilege to be able to work in a Catholic community where one’s own faith in God is nurtured and fuelled every day. On behalf of the staff I ask that you pass on our very sincere thanks to your children for making our lives more complete by way of what they bring to us on a daily basis. Thank you and God bless.
