PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents

It was great to see all of the green being worn for St. Patrick's Day. Well done to the pastoral care council for organising the fundraiser. As usual everyone has been very generous in their donations.

We have been working very hard in all classes on our social skills and the one that is in focus at the moment is manners. I was in the Year 4 classroom this morning and as one of their before school activities they had to write on their laptops what showing good manners looks like. A great way to make an important topic real and meaningful.

Next week is student interview time, if you have not yet sent in your form booking your interview for Pre Primary to Year 6s, please get it in as soon as possible. It is an important time that is part of our assessment schedule at the school.

WINTER UNIFORMS - TERM 2 Winter Uniform Pick Up Day

Friday, 20th March - School Hall 8 - 9am Students are expected to be in full winter uniform at the commencement of Term 2.

Engaging Hearts and Minds Last week we began our second whole-school social skill focus for Term 1: Using Manners. We currently have a ‘Manners Jar’ in the canteen for staff to acknowledge students using their manners at school. We will be choosing names from the Manners Jar for a gold box award at assembly. Have you seen a Sacred Heart student using their manners? Let us know! We would be very grateful if parents and caregivers could please reinforce, role-model and practise at home. Thank you for supporting our whole-school program. Please also pop along to our Engaging Hearts and Mind blog on the school website at: http://shpshengagingheartsandminds.blogspot.com.au/ as there are 3 new posts written by Miss Allen and Mrs Perlini to read: Active Listening and Haiku Deck in Year 4, What are good manners and how can we teach them? and 5 easy steps to handle big emotions. Please also subscribe to this blog by email, so you never miss a post! This can be done via the blog website. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

Practical Parenting Advice by Michael Grose Here are four practical strategies you can use to promote a sense of persistence in your children: 1. Develop a vocabulary for persistence Words like “Hang tough”, “Work Hard” and “Hang in there” can become part of their everyday vocabulary. 2. Point out to children when they stick at a task Most parents know it pays off when they catch their children being good but it also pays off to catch them being persistent. The behaviours you focus on as parents expand so let them know when they have been persistent. Also remind them that persistence generally pays off. 3. Help children to remember times when they experienced success by HANGING IN when they were younger. Let them know that persistence has paid off before and it will again. 4. Talk about HARD WORK with your children They need to understand that to be successful they need to do things that are NOT fun or easy. While it would be good if all work and learning was fun, in reality, this is not always the case. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

The Sacred Heart Community Cook Book As part of our school fund raising this year, we would like to publish a Sacred Heart Recipe Book. We know that many families have their favourite style of food, favourite cultural dish or special dietary requirements. Some of the categories we plan to use in our book will be breakfast, lunch, dinner, cakes and slices, special dietary requirements, old fashioned favourites, dips and snacks and mums quick and easy. You may also use recipes from popular chefs such as Jamie Oliver, or Donna Hay etc. If you are using one of these recipes then please acknowledge the chef and where the recipe comes from. If possible please take a photo of your creation using a camera or photo equipment with a high definition resolution. One of our categories will be Old Fashioned Favourites. Please ask Grandparents what was the best recipe of their day. Any cooking tips that you may have (old or new) can also be included. Please return your ideas to Mrs Worner by the end of term one. Happy recipe hunting and cooking. Mrs Barbara Worner (Art Teacher)

School Banking Newsletter….. March 2015 Welcome to another year of School Banking! We continue to work hand in hand with the Commonwealth Bank teaching our children the importance of saving and lifelong money stills through this wonderful program. We were thrilled to hear that our school earnt the highest amount in commissions of all the Western Australian schools in 2014. Our commission was a massive $2807.07 for the year! This is derived from 5% of all deposits we accept (to a maximum of $10 per deposit) plus $5 for every new student that starts banking through the school. Thank you to all involved with school banking and most importantly all the children who bank with us throughout the year. Let’s continue on our winning streak!

An important message for

Youthsaver account holders: The interest rate for Youthsaver accounts is only 0.01% p.a. however you can earn BONUS INTEREST of 3.19% p.a. if you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals every month. So even if you can’t bank every single week, at least make one deposit each month so you can earn the bonus interest.

Hey Kids…..Join the Program! To start banking at school, all you need to do is ask mum or dad to visit your local Commonwealth Bank branch and open up a Youthsaver Account. They’ll need their drivers licence or passport as well as your birth certificate or passport. You’ll receive a dollarmites deposit book & wallet as well as a Platybank money box. Then you just need to earn your pocket money and make your first deposit and start earing rewards. School banking is held every Tuesday morning, from 8.30 to 9.00 in the School Library! See you there!

To keep students motivated and encourage participation, every year CommBank introduce a new savings adventure. In 2015, we’re taking students on a mission to Planet Savings and have eight new reward items to choose from our Outer Space Savers range. The items available in term one are the ET DVD and the outer space handball. For each deposit made, you will receive one silver token. Tokens were carried over from last year, so remember to order your reward as soon as you have ten tokens on hand. There are also still plenty of great rewards available from previous years.
