NEWSLETTER: 18th November 2015 TERM 4, WEEK 6

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Week Six of the Term. Springtime continues and yesterday, our newest “blooms” of Sacred

Heart buds, our 2016 Kindergarten class, began their journey of growth, descending on their classroom and

outdoor area for their Orientation morning with all the excitement and enthusiasm we could possibly want!

A special thank you to Mrs Marie McKenna for her preparations for the session, and of course, she was so

well supported by her trusty assistants, Miss Ngyuen Dinh, Mrs Anita Miocevich, Mrs Sue Hanford and I am

extremely grateful to our Senior students in Year Six, who acted as ushers for the morning- epitomising what

Sacred Heart students become!

We look forward to this Thursday’s Kindergarten Parent Information Session in the Hall, when parents will

hear about our school, our programmes, our uniform and our screening procedures for next year- In

addition, next week will see our Pre-Kindergarten children visit for their Orientation morning- please make

our new families feel welcomed and supported as they embark on their journey at Sacred Heart, Highgate.

Learning - Learning from our experiences.

The coming weeks see many of our children doing some of their learning off site! Several classes have

excursions planned to support the learning that they have been focused on in their classrooms- our children

in Year Six will be heading to The Maze on Tuesday 1st December. Some of our Year Five students will

participate in a Caritas Leadership Workshop with other Catholic school students on Monday, and our

children in Years One and Two, will be trekking to Caversham Wildlife Park and Whiteman Park on

Wednesday 25th November. As always, learning out of a classroom brings rich rewards, but very

significant obligations to us as a school in providing supervision and support- our parent helpers are very

necessary to the success of the day, and on behalf of our teachers, I extend my thanks to you all for your

contributions. We look forward to reports of these days, on our children's return!

Engagement The promotion o f positive re lationsh ips with our students/staff /parents.

of people involved in our Fete, and all our P and F initiatives this year, our special Sundowner planned for

tomorrow night, promises to be a lovely opportunity for us all to share fellowship, food and drink - it's not

Accountability Tak ing re sponsib ility for the q uality o f our work .

The Sacred Heart School Board meets this evening for our November meeting, focused on the 2016 Initial

Budget- I wish to acknowledge the enormous amount of work by our Finance Committee, Mr Andrew

Sullivan and Mrs Linda Robertson, that has gone into preparing reports and documents for our analysis this

week, in preparation for the presentation to the School Community at next week's AGM on Wednesday 25th

November at 7.00pm.

Last week, together with other Leadership Teams from our region’s Catholic schools, Ms Byrne-King, Mrs

Perlini and I worked on our 2016 Annual School Improvement Plan. This has been the beginning of the

process that will involve all staff, as we determine our actions for next year, in the domains of LEAD

(Learning, Engagement, Accountability and Discipleship). In publishing these actions, we hope for all in our

School Community to have a clear understanding of our priorities and vision.

Final Staffing placements for 2016 continue to be our focus, and currently, some staffing appointment

processes are underway. Parents will be informed of the 2016 Staff placements, together with the 2016 term

dates and our school’s scheduled 2016 pupil free days, as soon as possible. In addition, this term, we will be

scheduling a transition morning opportunity for our current and incoming students, to experience their new

classroom and teacher, prior to embarking on their Summer break.

Discipleship Living out the teach ings o f Je sus.

I was very fortunate to have come across some information this week, relevant to talking with children about

the recent Paris attacks- I have included it today, hoping that it may support our families in their discussions

with their children. The Paris terror attacks that occurred on Friday night have left the international commu-

nity reeling. Although Australia is geographically far from the attacks, the extensive media coverage means

most, if not all of your students will have been exposed to what happened in some way. In addition, there

are Australians visiting France who were injured or exposed to the attacks; and thousands of French families

living in Australia who will be deeply affected by these tragic events. The closer the event is to a person, the

more likely it will have a significant impact.

If students haven’t seen images on TV, the Internet or in newspapers, they may have overheard adults talk-

ing about the events. Older children may have been exposed to the tragedies through Facebook and other

social media. Those who are currently unaware will hear about it from students at school.

We know from research on the aftermath of the tragic events associated with 9/11 that repeated viewing of

trauma in the media can be disturbing for both children and adults. Children are especially vulnerable to ex-

periencing feelings of loss of safety, fear or apprehension following exposure to such events.

6 key things teachers can do to support students who feel scared or worried as a result of the Paris attacks:

Normalise. Let the student know that feeling scared, sad or angry after seeing or hearing about such events

is normal and that the fear will subside.

Provide perspective. Answer questions, or correct inaccurate information honestly, simply and age-

appropriately. Avoid cultural stereotyping.

Provide a sense of safety and control. Remind students they are safe; that extreme acts of terror are not oc-

curring in their street, suburb, town or country. However, some older students may wish to further

discuss the Martin Place siege that took place in Sydney in 2014 or other recent terror events. Help

them feel safe at school by maintaining routines, and discussing what, and who keeps them safe at

home, at school and in the broader community.

Page 3: SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL - Highgate - WA · 2016. 4. 1. · Final Staffing placements for 2016 continue to be our focus, and currently, some staffing appointment processes are

Promote coping behaviours. Have the student identify things they can do to help them feel

better such as talk to a parent, write in a journal, play a game, go for a run or spend time

with friends. Suggest they do one of these things when they feel scared, sad or angry.

Focus on helping. The famous Fred Rogers quote can be a helpful way to begin discussions.

‘When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for

the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of

‘disaster,’ I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are

still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.’

As a class brainstorm ways to help those directly affected in Paris, such as writing letters of

support to a class in France, or donating money to the French Red Cross. Alternatively,

discuss ways they can be helpful in their own community by raising awareness about an

issue, or fundraising for a local support agency.

Most students who experience, witness or hear about a traumatic event will recover after several

days, however for some it might take several weeks.

If your child has been displaying concerning behaviours for more than one month following the trau-

matic event, it is recommended that you seek the support of a psychologist or the family doctor.

In closing, can I ask that we all call to mind the needs and intentions of so many people in our

world who are wrestling with violence, terrorism, loss and displacement.

Many thanks and God Bless,

Mrs Tanya McGuire

Principal

Caritas: Just Leadership Workshop Caritas Australia has kindly offered Sacred Heart Primary School the opportunity to participate in the “Just Leadership Workshops” for Year 5 student leaders. The workshop is focused on recognising and developing leadership skills and using the strengths we have to help those who are less fortunate. A selection of Year 5 students, from Sacred Heart, will have time to plan some school-based activities to support Project Compassion in 2016. It is a great opportunity for our group of Year 5 students to work together and see our common Catholic mission in action. We wish the selected Year 5 students well for next Monday’s workshop. 1:1 MacBook Night Thank you We would like to thank the Year 3 Parents for attending the MacBook 2016 Information Night, last Thursday. Mrs McGuire introduced the evening which proceeded with Miss Allen, the Year 4 teacher, Miss Cooper, the Year 5 teacher and Ms Byrne-King, the Year 6 teacher, presenting a comprehensive teaching sequence of how the MacBooks will be used in the classroom, as educational tools. Mr Derek Stewart, our IT consultant and technician, concluded the presentation discussing the technical specifics for the computer and network, for the 1:1 MacBook Air Laptop program. Thank you to the staff and Mr Stewart for their time in preparing the night and again to the Year 3 parents for attending the evening. An information sheet will go home today with your child, with a summary of information and the technical specs for the computer needed next year. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

Hot Weather Reminder Sun Safety- Slip Slop Slap We advise students to apply sunscreen in the mornings before they come to school and require all students to wear their Sacred Heart Hat when they are outside, to protect them from the hot Australian sun. The school policy is NO HAT, NO PLAY. Please provide your child with a Sacred Heart, wide-brimmed hat, so the children can play happily and protected. Hydrating- Water is an essential nutrient for life, needed for many processes in the body. The body constantly loses water through the skin and lungs. Active children may become dehydrated more easily than adults, so it is important to replace fluids regularly throughout the school day. Having a water bottle at school allows the students to access it during class. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

Congratulations Lance Buluran Sacred Heart Primary School is pleased to announce that Lance Buluran, from Year 6, has been offered a place in the Shenton College Year 7 Gifted & Talented Program (Dept of Education WA) for 2016. Getting an 'offer' is a huge achievement; the unique gifted program provides the perfect context for children to develop their intellects and to participate in a vibrant and engaging community. We congratulate Lance on this excellent achievement and wish him all the very best in all his future endeavours. Well done, Lance. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

Engaging Hearts and Minds Last week, Year 3 and 4 students joined together to complete an engaging and important Health lesson. We were focusing on the idea of ‘personal space’ and what it looks, feels and sounds like. Mrs Hill read us the story ‘Personal Space Camp’ and Miss Allen taught us how to use Padlet to display the answers from our partner discussions. We used collaboration, manners, teamwork and communication skills to complete this lesson. The Year Fours were fabulous leaders and the Year Threes became Mac whizzes! Miss Allen (Year 4 Teacher) and Mrs Hill (Year 3 Teacher)

Red25 is a campaign/program to get donors to come in as groups either as work colleagues, school groups, community groups, sporting teams, friends/family etc. If there are any parents/teachers that are interested in donating, (sorry, primary kids are too young) and would like to do it with other like minded parents then contact Anita Pavic at [email protected] who is organising a group. A scheduled donation has ben set for Sunday December 13th at 10am at 140 William St Perth Blood Donor Centre if you are able to attend. If you can't donate this time but want to later with another group, please still email. It is a busy time of year for all, but also remember hospitals don't take holidays. Your single donation can save 3 lives. Thanks so much.

Money for Books Beaufort St Books is running a donation program where $1 from every $20 spent in the store will be forwarded to your chosen school as fundraising. If you are planning on getting some books for Christmas presents, or holiday reading, consider our local Beaufort Street Bookshop and advise them that your fundraising dollar is for Sacred Heart Primary School.
