Dear Friends,

If this is your first or second Sunday with us, we are especially grateful that you have come to be with us. It is our hope that you experience the love of Christ this morning and His presence during our worship.

“Jesus makes things work. When it comes to what we have been created for, that which gives everything else its meaning and value—that is, love—then we are powerless without Jesus. God is love personified. If we allow ourselves to be filled with him, our attempts to love will bear fruit.”

Brain aneurysm discovered—Outlook Very Good. As your Pastor and friend, I want to share a health issue that I am dealing with and make you aware that I will be offsite during my recovery. I had a smaller than average TIA (mini-stroke) in July which led to two good things: (1) my living a healthier lifestyle, and (2) the discovery of a brain aneurysm before it ruptured – so we can get it taken care of. On Wednesday, February 12, they will do a brain pipeline stent. They go in through the femoral artery, as one would for a heart catherization. The surgeon assures me the risk of complications is low. His nurse practitioner

informed me that how long before one can return to work varies from person to person, and while in some cases it is 3 months, for most it is 3-6 weeks. How my body responds will dictate that amount of time. So, most likely I will be back sometime between March 4 and March 25. A full recovery is expected. Thanks be to God for all his help, including a thanks in advance for your prayers!

“Not as bad as it sounds.” (1) When one hears “brain aneurysm”, our minds tend to think of people who died from RUPTURED ones. Mine is unruptured. (2) 97% of the time my procedure has no complications, and, even in the extremely unlikely chance of complications happening, the medical team is there to react swiftly to address them.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26. A great season of renewal.

Sports: The Chiefs won the Super Bowl. It will be fun watching the Pats beat them next year! Have the Sox found a manager? Spring training and “March Madness” are coming soon!

New & Ongoing in Our Community

Volunteers Needed for Our Monthly Mass for the Sick Ministry

Would you like to volunteer a few hours of your time one evening per month to a very rewarding Ministry here in the Sacred Heart & Our Lady’s Collaborative? Our Monthly Mass for the Sick started six years ago with a mission to bring comfort and hope to those struggling with illness. We have grown into a wonderful group of 20+ people who come to Our Lady’s once a month for respite and community through Mass, Anointing of the Sick, inspiring talks, and joyous entertainment.

Our ministry team needs someone who can help out on the fourth Monday of every month, to assist the priest during Mass with readings, anointing services and Communion. We also need people to help set up and decorate our tables ahead of time, make coffee, and/or bring some desserts and healthy snacks to share.

February 9 ~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Winter’s darkness still enfolds us, and so the theme of light and darkness in today’s readings is very apropos for us to ponder. In the first reading, Isaiah gives us an antidote, reminding us that performing works of mercy can bring light into the darkness. In the Gospel, “Jesus said to his disciples…You are the light of the world…your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Are your words and actions pointing people to Jesus? If they are not, what will you do to be a light in the darkness this week?

Collaborative Playgroup Attention Parents, Grandparents and Caretakers of Children 5 and under: you are invited to join our playgroup, which meets Friday mornings from 11:30am-1:00pm in the McPherson Room of Our Lady Help of Christians. This is a laid-back playgroup; come for part of the time or the whole thing. Grief Support Workshop Join us for an 8-week grief support workshop this spring, titled “Living with Grief”. The death of a loved one is unlike any other. Whether the death was sudden and tragic, or one with warning and preparation, the reality of death leaves most of us shocked, confused, and sad. These feelings may last for years. Grieving people need time and space to honor their grief. Your loss may be recent, or it may have been years ago. Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s has developed a program to help you and yours start the healing process. This group will begin Sunday, March 29, and run through Memorial Day weekend. The group will meet Sundays from 11:30am-12:30pm at Our Lady’s. Advanced registration is required. Care for Creation: "No Time to Waste" A community conversation about how to avert the worst impacts of climate change will be sponsored on Feb. 26, 7-9 pm at the Scandinavian Living Center, 206 Waltham St, West Newton. Entitled "No Time to Waste: Addressing the Urgency of Climate Change," the event will be co-hosted by the League of Women Voters of Newton and of five other area towns. Discussion topics will include:

• The current state of climate change science and implications for society

• The current status and importance of the regional transportation and climate initiative The plan to help transition gas utilities to delivery of clean, safe, renewable energy and the importance of the FUTURE Act An outstanding panel will outline the issues for discussion: Craig Altemose, executive director of Better Futures Project; Jordan Stutt, Carbon Programs Director of the Acadia Center; and Audrey Schulman, Co-founder and Executive Director of HEET (Home Energy Efficiency

February Book Club Our February Book Club date and location are changed to Saturday, Feb. 29, 7 pm, at the Allaire's home. Our selection is the short story and film Babette's Feast, which explores the transformation of participants in a eucharistic-like banquet prepared by Babette. Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time—Liturgical Year A

I know many of our parishioners are skiers. I learned to ski the hard way. I went with my family, and my uncle told me, “Oh, no problem...Gravity does it all!” But I learned that skiing requires more than that! And I got it when the ski patrol “arrested” me for being a hazard to others and gave me a free day of lessons.

I had to let go of the mistaken idea that gravity does it all – and it was a painful experience that made all difference.

St. Paul had a painful experience that made all the difference in his life. Having spent time persecuting Christians, he encountered Christ on the road to Damascus. He fell to the ground – which must have been painful, saw a light from heaven, and heard the words from Christ, “Why are you persecuting me?”. This probably happened somewhere around 35-40 A.D. Twenty years later, Paul is in the prime of his ministry, writing to the Corinthians, which we hear in the Second Reading today. He’s reminding them of the Gospel that he preached when he was there in person. He writes about having demonstrable faith – how he was living the good news, experiencing new life in Christ, practicing the Resurrection.

Paul’s painful experience made him into what Jesus is talking about in the Gospel today – into salt of the earth and light for the world – salt and light to others.

Paul’s example to the Corinthians was not one of persuasive words but of deeds. As we hear in the First Reading from the prophet Isaiah, Paul acted so that there would be no malicious speech, no oppression, no hunger.

We are each invited to practice the Resurrection. This weekend, there are Valentines up at the doors of the church, inviting us to provide outreach and support for those who are imprisoned. As we gather for the Eucharist today, let’s let our hearts be filled with Christ’s new life. Then, our charitable deeds can become the Resurrection alive in the world, touching the afflicted with the new life of Christ.

CURSILLO: An Opportunity to Deepen Your Faith

Cursillo is a short course in Christianity. Sacred Heart News Religious Education News

Grade 2 received the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday, January 25. Please pray for our families to discover anew God’s plan to gather us all to Himself through this amazing Sacrament!

Grade 10 students will attend an all-day Confirmation retreat on Sunday, March 15, at Craigville Retreat Center at Cape Cod. All participating must return permission slips to Michelle Solomon by February 11. There are a limited number of seats on the bus, so first-come first-served! Hot Cereal Needed In February, we are collecting hot cereal for St. Francis House. Donations can be dropped off during the week in the lower elevator lobby or at weekend Masses in the elevator lobby or upper church foyer at Sacred Heart.

Keep Your Loved Ones Connected! The Ministry of Care members gathered recently and would like to remind parishioners that we can visit, bring Communion to, and send cards and the weekly bulletin to homebound parishioners, keeping them in our prayers and keeping them lovingly connected to the parish. Monthly

greeting cards are sent. If you think you or someone else would enjoy receiving a card from the parish, please contact the parish office and let us know.

Join the Sacred Heart Choir! Music Ministry at Sacred Heart is enriched each Sunday at 9:00am Mass by our Liturgical Choir. The choir is always looking for new voices, of all levels, to join the ranks! The choir rehearses Thursday evenings 7:30-9:00pm in the church and gathers at 8:15am on Sundays to rehearse before Mass. Joining the choir is a terrific way to meet fellow parishioners who share a love of the liturgy and of singing. Interested singers can join at any point during the year. Coffee Hour after 9:00am Mass All are welcome at Coffee Hour in the MacKenzie Center, immediately following the 9:00am Mass on most Sunday mornings. It’s is a great opportunity for us to form the community we want our parish to be. Bagels, donuts, coffee, OJ, and other treats are offered. Families and folks of all ages are welcome to attend.

Sacred Heart Decorating Committee

The Sacred Heart Decorating Committee, which tends to the physical environment of the church throughout the liturgical year, is looking for some helpful hands and creative eyes to join them. David’s 15th Work Anniversary A cohort of parishioners wanted to honor David Nahabedian, Facilities Manager at Sacred Heart, for his 15 years of quiet service to the parish. They managed to surprise David at our coffee hour on January 26. There were words of thanks and honor to David, “The Man Behind the Curtain”, and he was presented with cards and pictures from parishioners. Thank you for all you do, David!

Our Lady’s News

Bristol Lodge Food Donation Thanks! Thanks to all who donated pasta sauce and/or soda in the last few months. Because of your generosity, we are stocked and ready to go for the next few months of service with our Confirmation Candidates. We prepare and serve dinner each month at the Bristol Lodge soup kitchen in Waltham, and we are very grateful for your assistance in this outreach.

A Fun Way to Get Involved Coffee and Donuts are offered after most Sunday 10:00am Masses. We’d love to sign up a few more folks willing to give a half an hour before and a half an hour after Mass. We will train anyone interested in being part of this great ministry, and you can commit to as many or few Sundays as you like. Even if you can only help one week, that would make a difference! Hearing Assistive Devices

We have four hearing assistive devices for any parishioners who may have difficulty at Mass. Parishioners can request a device from one of the greeters or from someone in the work sacristy (at the end of the ramp to the right of the sanctuary). Anyone who uses the device is asked to return it to the work sacristy or to a Greeter at the end of Mass. (Note: the devices are linked to the sound system in the church and are not useful anywhere else.)

Invitation to Serve: Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and

Greeters Needed and Welcomed! Would you like to become more involved in the Our Lady’s community? Consider serving at Mass!

Eucharistic Ministers: We are in need of ministers at all Masses. We are happy to have you serve according to your availability, whether that is every week or once a month. All active and confirmed members of the Church are welcome. Contact Maribeth Scott at 617-469-8110 or [email protected].

Greeters: Greeters are needed in particular for all Sunday Masses. The greeter’s primary role is to welcome all to the celebration. As the community leaves the church, the greeter sends all to take Christ to the world. Greeters may also assist with the collection. Women, men, and youth who are welcoming and caring of others would find this a rewarding ministry. Some couples or families may like to serve together as greeters. Lectors: We are seeking new lectors at all Masses. Lectors participate in the Mass in a particular way, proclaiming the Word of God in the assembly. To find out more, please contact Chris Graf at 617-332-5548 or [email protected].

Grand Annual — $50,000 Shortfall...

The 2019-2020 Grand Annual Collection will be ending at the end of February. Thank you to all who have contributed to this vital collection!

As of February 4, we have raised $147,726, about $50,000 shy of our $200,000 goal.

We seek your support to bridge this shortfall.

Whether you give $100 or $300; $1,000 or $5,000, your gift will be appreciated as it promotes the wellbeing and ministry of Our Lady’s. There are blue envelopes at the doors of the church.

Workcamp 2020—Serving in Our Own Backyard This June, high school students from Our Lady’s Parish will be serving at Workcamp for the 24th consecutive year, this year in Lawrence and Lowell, here in Massachusetts. It costs about $500 to send one parish youth to Workcamp. We ask that you consider giving, according to your means. We are so grateful for whatever you can give, including your prayers of support.
