Dear SHOJ Families:

“In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it for me.”

-Matthew 25:40

The staff had a meeting with the representative from Catholic Charities about the upcoming all school serve day. In our Catholic Parents as Stewards guidelines for Family Service that CPS organizes at least one family service project based on community need and helps the students learn the pillars of service, based on the teachings of the Catholic Church. I am so excited that the students get to participate in this project.

Many of us are familiar with Catholic Charities and some of the good work they do. The serve day will take the teachings on Corporal Works of Mercy, which according to the USCCB website “The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They “are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs” (USCCB). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. “

They are: Feed the Hungry, Give Drink to the Thirsty, Shelter the Homeless, Visit the Sick, Visit the Prisoners, Bury the Dead, and Give Alms to the Poor. Each grade will complete a project that will work toward one of these areas. The students will be given a lesson by a representative from Catholic Charities, make a card to include how we also prayed for them, and bring the bag to the truck to be delivered to Catholic Charities.

One of the goals for the children is that they have an enjoyable experience serving. When I look at the list of works, I struggle to find things that I am doing for each of them (I would encourage you to review ideas given on the USCCB Website) but I know this is what I am called to do. Lent is the perfect time for us to reflect, learn, and do a little better. Encourage your children to come with an open mind to serve day, to pray sincerely for those who need these services (we will start with Mass and end in a prayer service) and to continue to find ways to be the hands of Jesus in our community.

Prudence vs. Convenience (via Healthcare)Please, please, please be prudent and keep you child at home until they have been fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication! We are seeing students return to school having had a fever the previous day. We KNOW it is not convenient to keep kids home when they seem to be feeling better, and no longer have a fever.

HOWEVER, if your child has had a fever any at anytime during the previous day, they should not be at school. The flu and strep throat have been making their way though the classes. You may miss an extra day of work, but it’s important as we are reducing the chance of infecting OTHER students.

24 hours fever free without medication before returning to school!

St. James Academy - Scholarship Reception

A number of our 8th graders were honored last week at the St. James Academy Scholarship Reception. They were honored with a scholarship and/or recognition in one of 3 levels of achievement on the Placement Test; Archbishop, Prisident, or Principal level. Pictured from left to right, Helen Hornback (One Nation Under God Scholarship); Braden Magistro (President & Performing Arts Scholarship); Leah Phelps (President & Administrative Recognition Scholarship); Ayden Brady (Archbishop, Math Scholarhip & One Nation Under God Scholarship); Emily Free (Principal & Administrative Recognition Scholarship); Alex Westrup (Principal); Grace Hornback (Christian Stewardship Scholarship); Ryan Goetz (Archbishop). Not Pictured: Patrick Donnelly (Administrative Recognition Scholarship).

Read Across America! To celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday, we celebrated in many ways this week. Our futures are so bright, we had to wear hats and shades on Monday. We had guest readers from the Shawnee Police Dept. on Tuesday. Wednesday we got to read and write about our favorite destination. Thursday we designed a t-shirt on paper, and demonstrated our school spirit on Friday.
