HOLY YEAR OF MERCY — “Joyful Call” The time has come for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters. Mercy is the force that rea- wakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the fu- ture with hope. — Pope Francis SAINT MARIE BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS (1844 – 1879) Patroness of Lourdes, France Feast Day – February 18th St. Marie Bernadette Soubirous was born at Lourdes in 1844. At fourteen years of age she witnessed eighteen ap- paritions of Our Blessed Lady at Lourdes, instructing her to make known the miraculous healing powers which the Blessed Virgin, by her presence, would give to the waters at Lourdes. In 1866, St. Marie Bernadette Soubirous joined the Sisters of Charity at Nevers, taking her perpetual vows in 1878. Her contemporaries admired her humility and the authentic character of her testimony about the ap- pearance of the Blessed Virgin. Nevertheless she had to endure many severe trials during her religious life and exhibited heroic patience in sickness. She realized that the heal- ing spring was not for her, and was fond of saying: “The Blessed Virgin used me as a broom to remove dust. When the work is finished, the broom is placed behind the door and left there.” She died in 1879 at the age of thirty-five and was canonized in 1933 by Pope Pius XI. Coming to reflect before the body of Bernadette, the pilgrim sees, to-day, the face that 18 times looked on the Virgin Mary, the hands that, at the request of the Blessed Virgin, had scraped the ground and allowed the spring to flow at the back of the Grotto, the lips that related the words of the Immaculate Virgin and the Message of Lourdes. SAINT MARIE BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS (1844 – 1879)

Patroness of Lourdes, France Feast Day – February 18th

St. Marie Bernadette Soubirous was born at Lourdes in 1844. At fourteen years of age she witnessed eighteen ap-paritions of Our Blessed Lady at Lourdes, instructing her to make known the miraculous healing powers which the Blessed Virgin, by her presence, would give to the waters at Lourdes.

In 1866, St. Marie Bernadette Soubirous joined the Sisters of Charity at Nevers, taking her perpetual vows in 1878. Her contemporaries admired her humility and the authentic character of her testimony about the ap-pearance of the Blessed Virgin. Nevertheless she had to endure many severe trials during her religious life and exhibited heroic patience in sickness. She realized that the heal-ing spring was not for her, and was fond of saying: “The Blessed Virgin used me as a broom to remove dust. When the work is finished, the broom is placed behind the door and left there.” She died in 1879 at the age of thirty-five and was canonized in 1933 by Pope Pius XI. Coming to reflect before the body of Bernadette, the pilgrim sees, to-day, the face that 18 times looked on the Virgin Mary, the hands that, at the request of the Blessed Virgin, had scraped the ground and allowed the spring to flow at the back of the Grotto, the lips that related the words of
