This presents an ongoing challenge in a period of change as a balance needs to be struck such that our collective identity remains authentic to the founding ideals of St Marcellin Champagnat, which is often expressed as making Jesus known and loved whilst being game-changers for young people, especially those most on the peripheries. Certainly something to consider further, especially in light of the sense of ‘hope’ which permeates the Easter story.

Thursday 6 April 2017 (Term 1, Week 10)

SACRED HEART COLLEGE

From the Principal Dear members of the Sacred Heart College community,

As Term 1 draws to a close, Holy Week commences this Sunday. Reflecting on this term, a few things emerge - ongoing change, transition, development and growth. We have celebrated the significant achievements of the Class of 2016, which spring-boarded the Class of 2017 into their studies and they have worked diligently throughout the term. Students new to Sacred Heart are now immersed and engaged in the holistic learning programs of the College which have included learning in the classroom and beyond. We have accessed a wonderful new facility, The Br Joseph McAteer Centre at Somerton Park, celebrated the 200th Birthday of the Marist Brothers with the Young Marists facilitating an enjoyable social event, commenced the amalgamation process in earnest with the Marymount community and Catholic Education SA, and SHOCs footy opened their season with all grades victorious on the Main Oval last Saturday. SHOCs Netball, Soccer and the newly established Music group are also ready to launch! If we wrap into this reflection the numerous young, primary school children, boys and girls, and their parents who attended the recent Middle School tours, one can develop a broad sense of what comprises the Sacred Heart Community. Grounded in the Marist Tradition, we are blessed to be involved with such a vibrant community. 'Tradition' in the current context can be viewed as both a curse and a blessing. Some perceive tradition as replicating the past in terms of custom and practice whilst others focus on further nurturing the underlying spirit which energises the Catholic, Marist culture of Sacred Heart.

Mrs Helen O'Brien, Director of Catholic Education South Australia (CESA) As Helen concludes her tenure as Director, on behalf of the College I would like to acknowledge and thank her for her open engagement with the Sacred Heart community, particularly with the College Council. There has been an obvious need to rethink and further develop the provision of Catholic Education in the broader south west region of Adelaide. This has included reflection and action around the amalgamation of Marymount and Sacred Heart Colleges. This is but one of a myriad of projects underway across CESA, many of which have occurred during Helen's leadership. We wish Helen every blessing in the next phase of her life. Pilgrimage On Easter Sunday I depart for a Marist Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Rome and Champagnat country (Lyon, France) with a large group of fellow Marists from across Australia. I am looking forward to the experience and have much to ponder, some of which is mentioned above. In my absence, Mr Daniel Lynch will be Acting Principal. I wish all the Blessings of Easter - Hope, Love and Joy! I also invite you to the liturgy of the Stations of the Cross around Paringa Hall on Good Friday. Steve Byrne Principal

SHC launches new co-curricular sports uniform As Sacred Heart College moves into its 120th anniversary year, it is with great excitement that we formally launch our new range of sporting attire, bringing a contemporary, fresh look to all sports whilst still being true to the rich traditions of the College. 2017 will be a year of transition to the new attire, except for all 'First' sporting teams for which the new uniform will be required. In 2018, all sporting teams will be required to wear the new uniform. Available items for each sport, including optional items, are detailed in the link below. SHC-Co-curricular-Sports-Uniform-Matrix_2017.pdf. The new range is now available to purchase from the College Uniform Shop (43 Oaklands Road, Somerton Park). Japan Study Tour presentation A group of 10 Year 11 and 12 students visited the Middle School on Friday 28 March (Week 8) and made a presentation about the 2016 Japan Study Tour to all the Year 8 and 9 students, who are currently studying Japanese. The 2016 Japan Study Tour group (25 students and three teachers) went to Japan for 16 days, touring Tokyo to Hiroshima including five days homestay at Sozan High School in Okayama prefecture. Students fully enjoyed the tour, learned a lot and came back with even more motivation and enthusiasm for studying Japanese. The enthusiasm and passion for learning about the Japanese language and culture were passed on to the younger learners at the Middle School. Below are some of the comments from the Middle School students. Year 8 student reflections “It was interesting and they talked about how fun it was.” “They spoke with a lot of enthusiasm.” “The home-stay sounds scary but fun.” “It was awesome to hear they got to use their Japanese and they knew more than they thought they did.” Year 9 student reflections “I want to go because it looks so fun.” “The food looks yum and I want to try it.” “The videos were awesome! Looks like they had so much fun.” “I need to work on my Japanese.” We are currently planning the next tour in 2018! SHM Winter Terms 2 and 3 Uniform and Grooming Thank you to parents/caregivers for ensuring that students have remained in correct uniform and neatly groomed in Term 1. The school holidays provides an opportunity to ensure that the winter uniform is made ready for Terms 2 and 3. It is a College expectation that students arrive and leave each day wearing the College blazer with their winter uniform.

Students are not required to wear their blazer whilst wearing their PE uniform. The holiday break also provides an opportunity for students to attend to haircuts so that they arrive on the first day next term well groomed. A reminder that should students at the Middle School choose a longer style of haircut, the length should be above the collar and neat. We ask for your assistance in working with homeroom teachers in ensuring that students learn to wear the College uniform with pride. It should be noted however, that ultimately responsibility that students are in correct uniform and properly groomed lies with the student and parents/caregivers. Information about the College uniform and grooming can be found in the Parent Handbook and on the College website. Year 8 Japanese Recital Competition On the evening of Monday 27 March, Year 8 student, Ethan Tinnion represented Sacred Heart College at the annual Year 8 Japanese Recital Competition. The competition was held at the Education Development Centre in Hindmarsh and is run by the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of South Australia. Twenty students from a range of schools around Adelaide met to compete. Ethan was the third student to present and did a fantastic job. He worked hard practising his pronunciation and used appropriate gestures in his presentation. Even though he was nervous, Ethan represented himself and the College really well, and was presented with a participation certificate and able to choose a prize for his efforts. As part of the competition, all students were asked to memorise a set paragraph that introduced aspects of Japan, its culture and the origin of the Japanese language and writing systems. The students were judged by a native and non-native speaker on their pronunciation, fluency, intonation, presentation (gestures) and memorisation. As a Japanese teacher, it was pleasing to see Ethan have a go and step out of his comfort zone in trying something new. Congratulations Ethan! Mark Semmler Japanese Teacher

Year 11 & 12 Entrepreneur Program Our inaugural Year 11 and 12 Entrepreneur Program class went to City of Adelaide Council on to hear from local business advisory representatives. A great surprise was Lord Mayor, Martin Haese popping in to speak to the group! They also toured some local businesses to hear their experiences, visited the Adelaide Hub co-work space and had a class at Adelaide Tafe. The Entrepreneur Program is a new semester length subject offered for the first time in 2017. Students are studying a Certificate III in Micro Business Operations and the course is delivered by TAFE SA onsite at Sacred Heart. Karen Bailey Director of Teaching and Learning

Sacred Heart College Careers Expo 2017 As in previous years, the College will be staging a Careers Expo for students in the senior years of schooling. This year, for the first time, it will be held in the new Br Joseph McAteer Centre on Thursday 6 July. A wide range of education and training providers will be represented. Please mark the date in your diary and come along with your child between 6.00pm and 7.30pm. More details will be published closer to the date. This date may also be helpful for the boarding community as it is the evening before the last day of term. Are you able to provide career information? We would also really appreciate any assistance that could be given by parents, caregivers or old scholars by way of career information. It is relatively easy to get training organisations and universities to attend such functions but there would be considerable benefit in having people attend who could speak about the career itself. For example, we can get someone from the university to talk about courses for training teachers but sometimes the students would benefit from speaking to someone who is actually in the career and can talk from a personal point of view. So, if you could help, have the time and would like to help, we would love to hear from you. Please contact either Annemarie Honner or myself in the Careers Department at the College on 8350 2500. Peter Oswald Pathways Coordinator (Acting)

2017 e-LEARNING NEWS #2 Welcome to the second e-Learning news article for 2017. In this edition we look at the latest updates to the G-Suite for Education range of apps. Update #1: Insert videos from Google Drive into Google Slides Since the end of February, you now have the ability to insert and play your Google Drive videos in Google Slides, in addition to videos from YouTube. In your slide presentation, select: Insert – Video – My Drive – click on required video. Once you have added a Drive video to your presentation, you can then choose when to start and end the video, whether the video should autoplay when presenting, and whether it should be muted or play with audio.

Simply right-click on the video and select Video options. See below for an example:

Update #2: Google Sheets changes Rotated text The ability to rotate the text in a cell in Google Sheets is now available. Simply go to Format - Text rotation. This is especially useful when you need to fit long header names into thin columns, or when you simply want to fit more text on a single screen. An example is shown below: Accounting number formats The ability to more easily read spreadsheets which contain monetary amounts can now be achieved by aligning the currency symbols within them. Choose: Format - Number - Accounting. An example is shown below: More border styles There is now the ability to choose from several new border styles in Google Sheets, including various thicknesses and double borders, which are commonly used in financial statements like balance sheets. Choose: Toolbar - Borders - Border styles. See below: Bernadette Thorpe e-Learning Coordinator
