The Feast of the Guardian Angel is October 2, and our staff and students would like to recognize and thank our 'earthly' Guardian Angels for their tremendous support. Many of them have been supporting our school families for years, some since the inception of the program. These individuals are important to keeping the door open for various students, and we just want to say, "Thank you and God bless you."

If anyone is interested in becoming a Guardian Angel at Sacred Heart School, please email me at shsprin@shsrockport.org. For as little as $300/year, you can join this generous group of benefactors and help a family enroll their child/ren in SHS.

ST VINCENT DEPAUL (SVDP)

THE BEGINNING In 1833 Frederic Ozanam, age 19 (founder of the Society of St. Vincent DePaul) along with 6 friends from his University in France heard God calling them to

serve the poor. They met with Blessed Sister Rosalie Rendu who taught them how to visit the poor in their homes and help them see first hand the pain and suffering the people were experiencing.

The Society was established in the United States in the city of St. Louis in 1884.

Today SVDP is established in 149 countries and has over 950,00 members worldwide. The Society has a presence on every continent in the world with the exception of Antarctica.

The Society is a lay Catholic organization and does not receive any direct funding from the Catholic Church. The Society enjoys a close relationship with the Church and is supported through the generosity of the parish.

WHO WE ARE & WHY THE BLACK BAG

Sacred Heart Church has supported SVDP since 1955 with a “Black Bag” collection the first Sunday of each month. When Frederick Ozanam and his friends started working with the poor they decided to pool their resources, which amounted to $17.70; however, so as not to embarrass each other as to how much each could afford to give they decided to take a secret collection using a common black bag. Using the black bag enables everyone to give what he or she can afford without being judged by his or her neighbor. As the bag is passed from hand to hand in the spirit of giving, the lowly bag is transformed into something beautiful and spiritual.

We, the SVDP volunteers at Sacred Heart Church are men and women, young and old. Some of us are wealthy, some of us are financially poor, but all of us are blessed with an awareness that our blessings are to be shared with our brothers and sisters in need.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church is the only parish in the entire Corpus Christi diocese to support a SVDP mission.

We are called “Vincentians” and invite you to join our group as we strive to serve those who need help in our community. Won’t you come and help us?
