SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - A There are two lessons for us in this reading. The
first is that we can take the period of time between the As-
cension and Pentecost and make it a novena to the Holy
Spirit. A time of prayer for us to be renewed by the power
of the Holy Spirit that we received at Baptism and Confir-
mation. A novena that moves us to surrender ourselves
more to the Lord and to be open to whatever gifts he desires
to bless us with. There might be some gifts that we are hesi-
tant to receive, either because we lack the desire for a par-
ticular gift or feel inadequate about one gift or the other.
True openness in prayer is to surrender ourselves com-
pletely to God’s desire for us. That is being open to receive
and use whatever gifts God pours out to us through the
Holy Spirit. The first lesson is the immediate one of prepar-
ing for this upcoming Feast of Pentecost.
The second lesson is one of patience in prayer.
How often do we bring some petition to the Lord in prayer
and get frustrated or discouraged when it is not immediately
answered in some way? Jesus’ instruction to his followers
that lacked a definite time, was a lesson for them to truly
trust in God and his plan. It’s a lesson that mature faith re-
quires living with patience and continued faith when we put
our prayer requests before God. It means putting our time
aside and entering into God’s time which is without begin-
ning and end.
May we take advantage of these days to wait and
pray for God to act in our lives both by renewing the Holy
Spirit within us, and blessing us with the faith and patience
to continually come before the Lord with our prayers. -
Father Killian Loch, O.S.B.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION We will be having Eucharistic Adoration in the chapel
on Friday, June 2nd 6 PM to 7 PM.

HAVE CALLED TO YOU; OF YOU MY

HIDE NOT YOUR FACE FROM ME,
ALLELUIA.” CF PSALM 27 (26) 7-9

SACRED HEART CHURCH GREENWICH
REFLECTION In the Gospel, Jesus is at the last supper the apostles
and the women followers had in that upper room. We are
listening to Jesus pray to his Father and our Father. He's
praying for us. In the verses just past today's selection
(verse 21), he will pray to the Father that we might all be
one. Jesus knows that his enemy, and those seduced by the
enemy, will work hard that we will always be divided. Self-
ishness, greed, lust, lust for power, competition, thought-
lessness of the needs of others, judgments, intolerance —
there are plenty of reasons for Jesus to beg his Father that
we might be healed of all of those movements and that we
be protected from being infected with those spirits, which
we know are all around us. Jesus prays for us - his own -
knowing that we remain in the world.
This is a great Sunday to pray to the Father for our-
selves. The Father knows we are in the world. Jesus is with
each of us every single moment of every day. We are never
alone. We have received the gift of the Spirit of Jesus many
times in our lives, but this week we can pray that the gift
might be re-kindled, re-ignited, re-refreshed and re-newed.
As we pray to the Father, we can hold up the things, the
attitudes, the un-freedoms, the defenses which keep us from
being people of unity, people who build communion, peo-
ple of mercy, people of love, with the heart of Jesus and the
fire of the Holy Spirit. There is so much we can ask the Fa-
ther for this week.
We can prepare our hearts for the celebration of
Pentecost next week by the way we pray this week. When
we devote ourselves to the kind of prayer that opens our
hearts to the very gifts God wants to give us, grace happens.
Perhaps we'll receive the gift of un-tangled speech - the gift
to share the graces we are receiving, so that others will hear
it and rejoice with us. Come, Holy Spirit.
- Andy Alexander, S.J.

THE PRECEPTS OF THE CHURCH 1. The first precept (“You shall attend Mass on Sundays and
holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor”) re-
quires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating the
Resurrection of the Lord, as well as the principal liturgical
feasts honoring the mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Vir-
gin Mary and the saints; in the first place, by participating
in the Eucharistic celebration, in which the Christian com-
munity is gathered, and by resting from those works and
activities that could impede such a sanctification of these
days.
2. The second precept (“You shall confess your sins at least
once a year”) ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the
reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which contin-
ues baptism’s work of conversion and forgiveness.
3. The third precept (“You shall receive the Sacrament of
the Eucharist at least during the Easter season”) guarantees
as a minimum the reception of the Lord’s body and blood in
connection with the paschal feasts, the origin and center of
the Christian liturgy.
4. The fourth precept (“You shall observe the days of fast-
ing and abstinence established by the Church”) ensures the
times of ascesis and penance which prepare us for the litur-
gical feasts and help us acquire mastery over our instincts
and freedom of heart.
5. The fifth precept (“You shall help to provide for the
needs of the Church”) means that the faithful are obliged to
assist with the material needs of the Church, each according
to his own ability. The faithful also have the duty of provid-
ing for the material needs of the Church, each according to
his own abilities (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Nos.
2041-2043).
