YEAR-END WALK TO ST. BARNABAS FOR MASS – CANCELLED

Over the past two years we have enjoyed a Sacred Heart

Catholic community walk to mass at St. Barnabas. Our police

friends, St. Barnabas staff, trustee, superintendent and parents joined together with our staff and students as we walked to mass together. Our community police officers held up traffic so that we were safe and walked together as one. This year because of renovations at St. Barnabas we will be having our mass at Sacred Heart in the gym on June 23 @ 10:00AM. We hope to be able to resume our tradition next year. EXTENDICARE DANCE PRESENTATION On May 11th the Gr. 3/4 class had the pleasure of performing dances for the seniors at Extendicare. It was the perfect time as we were celebrating Catholic Education. It helped us practice the virtues of compassion, love and justice. It also enabled us to live out our Faith, as Jesus taught us. We performed four dances, Jai Ho, Macarena, Achy Breaky Heart and I gotta girl. We also made cards for them which made them very happy and feel loved. We hope we can go again one day and volunteer to help our seniors. Kaye S

LIBRARY BOOKS/TEXT BOOKS As we enter the last few weeks of the school year, we wish to draw your attention to our request for the prompt return of all library books and text books by Friday, June 16th. You can be of great help to us by checking at home for these items and by encouraging your children to return all school books.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2017 – OUR FIRST DAY BACK Our first day back

to school is Tuesday September 5, 2017. We will follow our past practice of Kindergartners gathering in the

kindergarten yard and the rest of

the students lining up in by their grade number in the big yard. Parents are permitted in the big yard on the first day only and then we will ask you to be respectful of school safety and also allow students to focus on their teacher and the day ahead. For our little ones in kindergarten, parents are only permitted outside of the kindergarten area and not in the kindergarten yard or in the classroom. It’s tough to let them go on the first day but the sooner students can focus on their teacher the more productive and successful day and year they will have. We look forward to the new year! ARE YOU MOVING? If you plan to move from the Sacred Heart Catholic School Community over the summer months let us know as soon as possible. Having an up to date account of the number of students we expect for next year, helps us to prepare resources, class lists and classrooms. Please contact us at 416-393-5415 if you plan to move prior to September 2017.

OVER THE SUMMER Over the summer our custodial staff will be busy cleaning up from the year that was and preparing for the year that will be. They strip and wax all the floors, clean all classrooms, washrooms and hallways, report and supervise repairs and much much more to make Sacred Heart the beautiful place it is. Thanks for all you do to make our school a great place to be….Thanks Mr. Cardinale, Head Caretaker and Steve Capone, Night Caretaker. TD SUMMER READING CLUB The TD Summer Reading Club is coming to a Toronto Public Library branch near you! The TD Summer Reading Club is an inclusive program, in English and French, that strives to engage all children in the joy of reading while championing Canadian writers and illustrators. The program helps connect families with books and builds confidence in reading through the delivery of free incentives and fun, accessible library activities. Children who register for the TD Summer Reading Club at their local library receive free program materials and are encouraged to earn stickers by reading over the summer. They are also invited to participate in programs organized at their local library branch and share their love of reading with children across the country through the TD Summer Reading Club website. A list of recommended books is provided, but kids can also connect with local library staff for more great reading suggestions.

GUIDANCE CORNER Miss Vincent, Elementary Guidance Counsellor, Area 7 & 8

There are a number of summer learning opportunities available for intermediate students. A Summer Enrichment Camp for Grade 7 and 8 students helps to continue the development of necessary skills for success in both Literacy and Numeracy. The Summer Reach Ahead program offers students going into Grade 9, the opportunity to earn a high school credit through a variety of learning experiences at the high school they will be attending in September. Information for both of these programs can be found on the Continuing Education page of the Board website: https://www.tcdsb.org/ProgramsServices/ContinuingEducation/SecondaryCreditCourses/SummerSchool/elementaryss/Pages/default.aspx

Graduating Grade 8 students can now begin their Community Involvement hours beginning July 1st. Guidelines on how to attain this graduation requirement can be found at: https://www.tcdsb.org/programsservices/schoolprogramsk12/guidancecooped/communityservice40hours/Pages/default.aspx

The Footsteps to Success summer day camp is being offered at Blessed Mother Teresa during July and August. This free camp is available for children aged 10-13. More information and registration forms can

be found here: https://www.tcdsb.org/FORSTUDENTS/FOCUSONYOUTH/Pages/Footsteps-to-Success-summer-camp.aspx

It is important to keep your child active and motivated to continue learning during the summer months. Be creative with how you can involve your child in a variety of inexpensive and entertaining learning opportunities during July and August. I have included a link from www.modernmami.com on some fun ways to keep your children busy during the summer holidays: http://www.modernmami.com/summer-activities-for-kids/

concerns about health risks (eye damage, premature skin aging, skin cancer etc.) from too much exposure to sunlight. Most of this damage to the

eyes and skin starts in childhood. Even one

sunburn during childhood can double a child’s chance of skin cancer later in life. All skin colors are at risk. The good news is that these health risks are preventable with a few simple steps. To help protect your child from too much sun, we are recommending that you follow these sun safety guidelines during outdoor summer activity.

Page 6: Sacred Heart Catholic School - Toronto Catholic District ... · Keziah B Kenesha H Reese R Jared B Isabella L Edric S Jessica B Melia M Shamar S Benjamin B Jahkeem M Jayson T Rafael

Dress your child in:

A long-sleeved shirt and long pants (or knee-length shorts) made from fabrics that are tightly woven.

A hat with a wide brim or with a flap to cover the back of the neck. The hats should also be made of a tightly woven fabric.

Use SUNSCREEN with SPF15 or higher that gives protection from both UVA and UVB rays. If your child is going to be outside in the sun for longer than two hours an SPF 20 or 30 would be a better choice.

Make sun protection a habit and set a good example. Teach children about sun protection so that they become aware of the dangers and can start taking precautions that will become lifelong healthy habits. School Cashless Online Payment Coming to all TCDSB Schools The Board of Trustees have approved the implementation of new system for cashless online payment of school-related activities, goods and services across the TCDSB. Once the program is fully implemented by February 2108, all parents, staff and students will have the option to make secure payments online by credit card and receive a receipt.

The new online payment system provides the following benefits: • A convenient fee payment option that saves

time

• Reduces paper • Student safety - no more need to send cash or

cheques to school • A quick and easy to register. (It takes less than

5 minutes) The Board is currently “Beta testing” the new cashless online payment application in selected TCDSB schools. More details and information regarding when the payment system will be introduced in our school will be provided to parents as soon as it is available. Year of the Parish Capping off the Year of the Parish, and Catholic Education Week, the Toronto Catholic District School celebrated Parish Family Day on Friday, May 5th. This culminating celebration featured a Mass of celebration, and a showcase of student artwork, written work (poetry and stories), original music and video tributes that spoke to the special bonds that have developed between our school communities and their parishes, pastors, sisters and others in their parish community. To see all the wonderful submissions from our schools, see https://www.tcdsb.org/Board/NurturingOurCatholicCommunity/YearoftheParish/PFDShowcaseSubmissions/Pages/default.aspx

The event truly brought to life our pastoral plan--Together With One Voice--Family, Parish and School. Throughout the year, we have seen the collaboration among our schools and our parishes, and witnessed many examples of partnership, celebration, outreach and involvement. To see photos from the celebration, click here: https://www.tcdsb.org/Board/NurturingOurCatholicCommunity/YearoftheParish/Pages/Parish-Family-Day-Celebration.aspx. The Board now looks forward to bringing together the Family, Parish and School as we launch the Year of the School starting September 2017, and we continue to build on the solid foundation that we have succeeded in creating together. http://archive.isiglobal.ca/vod/tcdsb/Board/NOCC/archive_TRAILER_Year-of-School-Animation.mp4.html

2017 Canada Day Celebrations With the celebration of Canada’s 150th

birthday, this Canada Day is truly extra special. As we have done in the past, schools are encouraged to celebrate Canada Day a few days early by joining in our red and white spirit day on June 29th, and gathering as a school community to sing the national anthem together at 9:30 a.m.

TCDSB is in the process of creating a commemorative CD featuring 10 renditions of our national anthem as performed by TCDSB students. To view the more than 50 submissions from schools across the board, see: https://www.tcdsb.org/affiliates/Canada150/VideoContent/Pages/Music-Video-Submissions.aspx Students who have an artistic flair are invited to consider submitting a CD cover design by no later than June 16, 2017. Secondary School Admissions Policy Changes Thank you to everyone who participate in the consultation regarding the proposed changes to the high school admissions policy. The online survey has now closed. A report will go before the Board in June 2017. Know Anyone Seeking Employment with TCDSB? The Toronto Catholic District School Board is currently hiring for secretarial and custodial positions. For more information regarding hiring procedures, please refer to the following link: http://www.tcdsb.org/Careers/Pages/Jobs.aspx Interested in Parent Involvement? Want to Help Others Become More Engaged in Catholic Education? The Toronto Catholic Parent Involvement Committee is a provincially mandated and funded committee, which supports student achievement through increased parent involvement. Members of CPIC work locally within their own wards, and also provide information and advice on parent engagement to the school board. The committee strategizes and plans initiatives and events that promote and facilitate parent engagement, and helps parents to support their children’s learning at

home and/or at school. Toronto CPIC members are volunteer parents/guardians, who bring forward information and ideas from their own wards, and relay important decisions and important information from the central table back to the parents in their area. If this sounds of interest, consider running for election in the fall of 2017. Don’t have the time to serve on a committee? Consider nominating someone for the committee, and remember to come out and vote for your CPIC representative. Visit www.tcdsb.org soon for detailed election information.
