It was tricky trying to order stock and plan for the needs of a ‘new’ event. Each stall was then staffed by volunteers for the day. Fabulous – many thanks. To the bakers – a big thank you for the fantastic cakes, biscuits and slices. We had a very enthusiastic response to our request for delicacies. So many delicious cakes. Once again thank you. We also had wonderful entertainment in the hall. A huge thank you to our performers and MC’s who provided a spectacle for SHP. There were many ‘behind the scenes’ volunteers who worked quietly at supporting or promoting our Family Fun Fair. We appreciate your much needed help to make an event such as this a huge success. PRINCIPAL Family Fun Fair 2019

Congratulations to the Family Fun Fair committee. I think you could take on the Olympic Games as your next project. It was very well organised and executed. Even the weather was helpful on Sunday. It was amazing.

This Family Fun Fair began with a suggestion for a school fundraising market or fair last year. The idea grew and grew. It took on a life of its own. The organising committee very quickly had a large table of parents, google docs appeared, spreadsheets were copious, map version 539 appeared within the first few weeks, and the race was on!!!!!

Sponsorship was mentioned as an early consideration. Very quickly our major sponsor parent Sabina Grewal (Zahra Bellamy Yr 1S) from Lindfield Pharmacy pledged a generous donation. Next we had the school logo on our coffee cups – donated by the charitable Zammit family (Thomas Yr 5 & Eva Yr 1/2J). The offers continued to pour in. A huge thank you also to our sponsors: Aquabliss, Ku-ring-gai Council, Turramurra Veterinary Hospital & Fine Photography.

Special thanks to the amazing organising committee – Christina Bridgeland, Kate Bell, Jenne Cusack, Daniela Foote, Mel Garling, Rob Kneeshaw, Sabina Grewal, Michelle Key, Sylvia Ulevik, Ed Bridgeland, Nav Snape, Jocelyn Barber, Michelle Mullins, Alison Marshall, Claire Brickett, Maria Leotta, Charlotte Hudson, Mark Jarrett, Sam Starke,

Also a huge thank you to all the class parents who took responsibility for a stall.

On the day, the goodwill oozed from our children, parents, families and our parish community to all those who visited SHP on Sunday.

Many many thanks.

STEM

Last Friday our Stage 2 teachers presented their findings after working with the STEM Academy from Sydney University. The STEM Academy offers knowledge, skills, resources and support to enable teachers to make real change in their classroom teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. The program is the first of its kind in Australia and is helping build the nation’s STEM capability by inspiring teachers through enrichment-focused professional development. Twenty schools were part of the project and on Friday they were invited to present their evidence-based achievements to colleagues and the broader community. It was a proud principal moment for me when our school was one of the two schools invited to return next year to again share their journey with a new round of schools about to embark on this journey. Congratulations to Leanne Grouse, Laura Munce, Suz Simpkins, Simone Huttary and Janet Doyle.

Our STEM team will share their presentation here at SHP before the end of the year. Watch out for that date. All parents are welcome to attend.

Debating

Today a group of Yr 5 students are participating in a debating workshop conducted by Masters Academy. The students will peer tutor other students next year in a debating competition against other schools. We are grateful to the P&F for covering the cost of this training session which will promote and improve these important skills.

Christmas Concerts Our Christmas Concerts are fast approaching, dates and times as follows: Wednesday 11 December @ 11.30am Thursday 12 December @ 6.30pm Details of costumes are outlined on your child’s Curriculum Overview for Term 4. Click here for more details. Mary Hor Principal

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Catholic Mission’s visit to Sacred Heart On 14th November the students in Year 5 & 6 at Sacred Heart were extremely lucky to meet a member of the Catholic Mission. Her name was Dorothy and she works very hard to proclaim the message of God. Dorothy wants everyone to be part of the Catholic Mission community and make donations for underprivileged children, focusing on the children of Ghana. What happened? Dorothy first introduced what it is like to be part of a Catholic Mission and what you do to help other children in need. After that we all picked either a red or green piece of paper. These pieces of paper determined what type of family and life you were born into, if you picked a red piece of paper you were a very lucky child. You had food, fresh clean water, really good education and great health… but… If you picked the green piece of paper you were a poor child. We used these pieces of paper to act out life for these two sides of children our age. It showed us that those poor kids in Ghana didn’t choose to be there, they were metaphorically drawn out of a hat and fished out as a green piece of paper. The only difference was that we were roleplaying and they lived it every day! What have we taken away from this lesson? We learnt how hard life was for the people in Ghana and how privileged we really are. We now know that it is extremely important to not waste our food or water. Children in Ghana have to work hours to have one single snack and we get it without doing anything. So please, if you ever have any extra money, donate it to those who are less fortunate, because even the smallest things can make the biggest changes. We have learnt so many things from Dorothy. It was so interesting and thought provoking. We wore socks for crazy sock day, to raise money and awareness for the people in Ghana and we pray for them every day. Daisy, Azalea and Phoebe

Sock It to Poverty Last Thursday, students and staff wore their crazy socks to school to support Catholic Mission to “sock it to poverty”. Congratulations to everyone for raising $359.50 for Catholic Mission’s initiatives in Ghana.

Remembrance Day

Poems written by some of our Year 5 students in honour of Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day

Every petal that falls off a poppy reminds us of the tears people shared when their loved ones grew silent.

Every poppy that grows in the field reminds us of how many people fought for our country.

Every wreath on their grave shows us they were so brave.

Every grave we see reminds us of the guns finding their mark and making them fall down.

Every time we see our families faces we remember the soldiers sacrifice and those who never got to say goodbye

to their loved ones.

We will remember them,

Lest We Forget

Remembrance Day

The souls that fought in the war will always be remembered. The wives and children’s hearts filled with sorrow will always be remembered. The veterans that survived the war should always stay proud of fighting for years in hope that the war would eventually end. The souls that died during the war will always be remembered in hearts

all around the world.

Lest We Forget

Remembrance Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row and row.

That mark our place and in the sky And it is never too late to say goodbye.

Remembrance Day is a day of love,

When we remember the soldiers that flew above These were soldiers that were very brave

And they never gave up even through the toughest days.

Poppies are our symbol of peace And the memory of the people who were ceced

Our love became a dove For the people who became our love.

Lest We Forget

Remembrance Day

The soldiers fought hard, they fought for all, So on this day we always recall.

For days men walked through fields of death,

Weak and tired,out of breath.

Lifting empty spirits at the time of dawn, In the trenches, it was full of forlorn.

Holding back fire, defending our posts,

Hallucinating white figures, the outline of ghosts.

The soldiers have now passed and inside their place A velvet row of poppies lay there in grace.

Lest We Forget

Remembrance Day

Poppies, they can dance like graceful ballerinas among the feathery stalks of fields.

They can glow like bright little lamps on our warm winter coats in November.

Poppies can whisper, like long-lasting voices from the forgotten field of Flanders and the courageous soldiers

that fought in the war.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

Lest we forget

WELLBEING WEEK When?

Week 7, Monday 27 November – Friday 29 November

Why does Sacred Heart have a wellbeing week?

KidsMatter - National Child Mental Health Survey (Sawyer et al, 2000)

What will be happening?

This term the students at Sacred Heart will focus specifically on one SEL skill each day.

What is SEL?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decision (https://casel.org/what-is-sel/)

There will be a parent Information morning about how SEL is taught and reported on at Sacred heart. Mrs Munce will be presenting with parents to assist you on how you can ‘talk the SEL talk’ at home! Join us at 9am in the LIBRARY on Tuesday 26th November for a cup of tea and a SEL chat!

P&F NEWS

Sacred Heart Family Fun Fair The Fun Fair was a fantastic success on Sunday. The sun shone, over 1,500 people turned out, we raised over $30,000 for the school and, most importantly, everyone seemed to have a wonderful time! Thank you to everyone for supporting the event by attending, encouraging others to join, buying raffle tickets and bidding on the auction. One of the most pleasing things about the whole event was to see how many people worked together to put it on – it really was a whole community effort. Over 150 people helped out with planning, setting up, buying, budgeting, baking, BBQ-ing, photographing, MC-ing, marketing, donating, braiding, auctioning and packing up to mention just a few of the activities that went in to making it happen. Special mention must be made of the Fair Committee, who were instrumental in all aspects of the event and have been coordinating everything for several months in advance:

Jenne Cusack, Daniela Foote, Christina Bridgeland, Robert Kneeshaw, Kate Bell, Michelle Key, Cindy Chu, Michelle Mullins, Mel Garling, Maria Leotta, Sylvia Ulevik, Sabina Grewal, Mark Jarrett, Amy Zammit, Charlotte Hudson, Alison Marshall, Claire Brickett, Nav Snape, Sam Starke, Kelly Clouston, and Mary Hor.

We would also like to give a final shout out to our sponsors: Lindfield Pharmacy, Ku-Ring-Gai Council, Aquabliss, Turramurra Veterinary Hospital, and Fine Photography who helped get everything going in the first place. On behalf of everyone connected with the school, we want to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed to make it such a special day.

P&F Annual General Meeting The P&F Annual General Meeting will be held at 7pm on 27 November in the Staff Room. The meeting is open to all and will be an opportunity to review / feedback on the fair, have a say on what we should spend the money that was raised at the fair on, and make suggestions for P&F activities next year. We have a few current committee members taking a well-earned break, so if you want the school to continue to put on great events for our children and community and are interested in joining the committee, please do come along. If you can’t make it but are still interested in volunteering next year, please call Ed Bridgeland on 0400752646. Camp Out Given the busy time that many people have had recently putting on, supporting and attending events we have decided to postpone the camp out until next year. Cocktails 2020 One date for the calendar next year – the P&F Cocktails Party will be held at the school on Saturday 15 February 2020. Drinks sale We currently have excess stock of soft drinks from the Family Fun Fair and will be having a sale on Friday morning to clear this stock. The sale will be in the hall from 8.20am - 9.30am. All drinks will be 3 for $1. The drinks available are Water, Coke, Coke Zero, Fanta, Solo, Sunkist, Lemonade and poppers. Hoping to Open Sundays Due to increased demand, Aquabliss are hoping to open on Sundays soon. SCHOOL BAND PROGRAMME In preparation for our new beginner musicians joining the school band in 2020, your child should have brought home a green note last Thursday outlining the process over the next few weeks. A demonstration concert for years 2-5 to watch will be held on 28th November at 1.30pm. Parents are welcome to attend. This concert is designed to inspire the children to join the band and show them their options in relation to the different instruments they can choose from. If you already know that your child in year 2-5 is interested in joining the school band, you can return the expression of interest part of the green note to the school office as soon as possible as we have the opportunity to start doing some instrument testing this Thursday. This gives your child the chance to try out the instruments they are interested in playing and also gives us the chance to assess which instrument your child is most suited to. There will be further instrument testing done in week 8 and our final opportunity for testing is in week 9. We are looking forward to meeting our budding musicians very soon.
