SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTION While our faith is more than a code of moral principles, nevertheless, it inexorably involves moral principles as actions which flow from beliefs. Today’s first reading, from the Wisdom traditions of the Old Testament, reflects the final advice Moses gave to the people he led before he died and they entered the promised land, i.e. everyone has to make a decision as God looks on: to accept God’s directives and live, or otherwise equivalently choose that which leads to death. (n.b. no middle ground). St. Paul in today’s second reading reminds us that in this age of the Spirit within us, that Spirit scrutinizes everything that we do. Finally, the Gospel gives us 20 more verses from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ proclamation of a new law, which without doing away with the Commandments, fine tuned them in far greater detail. If we are serious about the decision for life, we need to reflect often on these details and form our consciences accordingly. To outright reject them, obviously is a grave mistake. More likely however, we are tempted 1: to try to pick and choose, 2: to decide (erroneously) that they are optional, or 3: simply decide not to think about them at all (which non-reflecting is ultimately a decision). Just one of a possible many examples: Today’s Gospel brings up the issue of divorce and adultery. Is it your experience of today’s culture that these issues are “off the table”, discussion no longer acceptable? Where does that mentality lead?
