SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTION

The readings for today’s liturgy finally moves beyond reflections upon Jesus pre-public life and into His public ministry. E.g. in this liturgical cycle of St. Matthew’s Gospel, we finally see St. Matthew after 6 straight Sunday’s of other Gospels. And sure enough it is taken from the opening proclamation of the “Sermon on the Mount.” Notice the motifs (especially the Messianic motifs) repeatedly harped upon by the Old Testament prophets: “sharing bread with the hungry; sheltering the homeless; clothing the naked; etc.” These, Jesus used when asked who He was. Notice also the characteristic that St. Paul reveals to the Corinthians, i.e. he “demonstrated the presence of the Spirit rather than relied upon persuasive words” So, after presenting us with the Beatitudes as the signs of the new creation, Jesus counsels: ”Your light must shine before others…so that the others might glorify God.” Does it sound to you like “actions speak louder than words”?

The PARISH OFFICE will be closed on Monday,

February 17 in celebration of President’s Day.

We will reopen Tuesday, February 18 at 9am.
