On July 22, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Mary Magdelene, one of the most prominent women mentioned in the New Testament.

Her name comes from the town of Magdala in Galilee, where she was born. Scripture introduces her as a woman “who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out” (Lk. 8:2).

Some scholars identify Mary Magdalene with the sinful woman who anointed the feet of Christ with oil in the house of Simon the Pharisee (Lk. 7:36-50). Others associate her with Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus (Lk. 10:38-42, Jn. 11). Some believe the three figures to be one person, while others believe them to be three distinct individuals.

What the Scriptures make certain about Mary Magdalene is that she was a follower of Christ, who accompanied and ministered to him (Lk. 8:2-3). The Gospels record her as being one of the women present at Christ’s crucifixion.

In addition, she was the first recorded witness of the Resurrection. The Gospels all describe Mary Magdalene going to the tomb on Easter morning. When she saw that the tomb was empty, she stood outside, weeping. Jesus appeared to her and asked her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” (Jn. 20:15)

She did not recognize him, however, and thought he was the gardener, until he said her name, “Mary!” (Jn. 20:16) Upon hearing this, Mary recognized him. She returned to the grieving disciples to announce to them the message of the Resurrection.

Pope Benedict XVI spoke about Mary Magdalene in his address before the Angelus on July 23, 2006. He referred to her as “a disciple of the Lord who plays a lead role in the Gospels.”

The Pope recalled Mary Magdalene’s presence “beneath the Cross” on Good Friday, as well as how “she was to be the one to discover the empty tomb” on Easter morning.

“The story of Mary of Magdala reminds us all of a fundamental truth,” Pope Benedict said. “A disciple of Christ is one who, in the experience of human weakness, has had the humility to ask for his help, has been healed by him and has set out following closely after him, becoming a witness of the power of his merciful love that is stronger than sin and death.” On June 10, 2016, the liturgical celebration honoring St. Mary Magdalene was raised from a memorial to a feast, putting her on par with the apostles.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading 1 Wis 12:13, 16–19

There is no god besides you who have the care of all,

that you need show you have not unjustly condemned.

For your might is the source of jus ce;

your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all.

For you show your might when the perfec on

of your power is disbelieved;

and in those who know you, you rebuke temerity.

But though you are master of might,

you judge with clemency,

and with much lenience you govern us;

for power, whenever you will, a ends you.

And you taught your people, by these deeds,

that those who are just must be kind;

and you gave your children good ground for hope

that you would permit repentance for their sins.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 86:5–6, 9–10, 15–16

R. (5a) Lord, you are good and forgiving.

You, O LORD, are good and forgiving,

abounding in kindness to all who call upon you.

Hearken, O LORD, to my prayer

and a end to the sound of my pleading.

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

All the na ons you have made shall come

and worship you, O LORD,

and glorify your name.

For you are great, and you do wondrous deeds;

you alone are God.

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

You, O LORD, are a God merciful and gracious,

slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity.

Turn toward me, and have pity on me;

give your strength to your servant.

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

Reading 2 Rom 8:26–27

Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weak‐

ness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit

himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one

who searches hearts knows what is the inten on of the Spirit,

because he intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will.

Gospel Mt 13:24–43 or Mt 13:24–30

In the shorter form of the reading, the passages in brackets are omi ed.

Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds, saying: “The

kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good

seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and

sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When

the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The

slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did

you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds

come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ His slaves

said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ He replied,

‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along

with them. Let them grow together un l harvest; then at harvest

me I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and e

them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my

barn.” ’ ”

[ He proposed another parable to them. “The kingdom of heav‐

en is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field.

It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full‐grown it is the

largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the

sky come and dwell in its branches.’ ”

He spoke to them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is

like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of

wheat flour un l the whole batch was leavened.”

All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke

to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through

the prophet:

I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain

hidden from the founda on of the world.

Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. His disci‐

ples approached him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the

weeds in the field.” He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is

the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the chil‐

dren of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one,

and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the

end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Just as weeds are

collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the

age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect

out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers.

They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be

wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like

the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought

to hear.” ]

Salute!!

My name is Guadalupe Casanova. My friends and family simply call me

Lupe. I was bap zed into the church on April 4th, 1965. I a ended St. Leo

the Great Catholic School up to the eighth grade and graduated from

Central Catholic High School in 1983. During my early years I served as an

altar server and completed my sacraments of ini a on while a ending

school. I look back and am thankful for the educa on, faith, prayers and

love that was provided by many of the priest, brothers, sisters and lay

instructors. While a ending college I met the young lady who would

become my wife. Nina and I were married at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church

in San Antonio on July 8th 1989. This year we have completed 31 years of

Holy Matrimony. We were blessed with two wonderful daughters Lauren

(29) and Kaitlin (24). They were both married in the Church to son‐in‐law’s

Carlos and Trae. Kaitlin and Trae blessed us all with our first granddaughter

Rosemary Therese last year in August. Lauren and Carlos will bless us with

our second granddaughter Teegan Reign who is due on September 5th of

this year. Lauren and Carlos are parishioners here at Sacred Heart, while

Kaitlin and Trae par cipate at St. Thomas Aquinas in College Sta on, TX.

Before my calling to the deaconate, Nina and I served our parish as catechist of confirma on II and helped with RCIA.

Nina became a member of the Catholic daughters and I joined our local Knights of Columbus council and even served a

couple years as Grand Knight. I was able to work alongside Deacon Ralph and Paul Hale as a picnic co‐chair for several

years. It was during this me, while praying before mass, I no ced that the Deacons were in dire need of help and felt

someone (other than me) needed to step up. A er one of our picnic mee ngs about 8 years ago Deacon Ralph pulled

me aside and asked if I had ever considered entering into the Deaconate. Of course, I said NO! He asked me to consider

it and I said I would, but planned on forge ng about it soon as I le the hall. In the coming weeks Deacon Tito and Ms.

Molly asked the same ques on, and while a ending a monthly Cursillo Ultreya mee ng Olga Baumann men oned that

I did not know it yet but that one day I would become the next Deacon of our parish. There were also other members

of our parish that seemed to ask me the same ques on. Ul mately, I came to the conclusion that ever since that first

thought along with the urgings and prayers of many of you in the community, there must have been some form of

divine interven on and maybe I should give it a prayerful considera on. A er the third me Deacon Ralph would ask

and yet another sign that happened completely away from our community, I realized I could no longer refuse Christ’s

calling and shared this with Nina. You see, I needed and wanted Nina’s and our daughters blessing for us to serve in this

capacity. In 2015 we submi ed my applica on and here we are 5 years later, and on August 15th by the grace of God I

look to be ordained into the permanent Deaconate for the Archdiocese of San Antonio at St. Rose of Lima.

Once again I want to thank everyone in our community for your prayers and support, especially for the support of Nina,

Lauren, Carlos, Kaitlin and Trae, Catholic Life Insurance and our Knights of Columbus council 6641, all the Deacons

along with their wives, priest, sisters and all who have help form me to serve our Lord and his people. I con nue to ask

for your prayers as I will con nue to pray for each of you. As we con nue to grow in faith together, take me to

consider how each of you have been called to serve our Lord. God has blessed each of us with certain gi s, how can

you use your unique gi s to further His kingdom here on earth?

Love and Blessings,

Lupe Casanova
