GHP MESSAGE
Be the Change You Want to See (The following comments are a portion of those made by our new Grand High Priest, the Most Excellent Jon D. Humphreys, at his installation on May 20, 2014.) Each Companion who approaches the office I now occupy has to ask himself what message he will bring to his Companions during his relatively brief one-year term in office. My answer to that question is summarized in the motto for the term – “Be the Change You Want to See.”
This is intended as a challenge to every Companion – a challenge to be part of a renewal of Royal Arch Masonry in his own Royal Arch Chapter. However, it is not as simple as it may appear. For, to “Be the Change You Want to See” requires that you have a vision of change for your chapter. To be a leader in your chapter, I believe you must develop, or already have, a vision of a future for your chapter that is better than the present. Whatever it is that you wish your chapter to be, that is your vision for your chapter. And I challenge each Companion this evening – to sharpen and expand his vision for his chapter – to see it clearly, as though it were a living reality – and then to personally accept the task of making that vision a reality by his work – his own time, patience and perseverance – in short, to “Be the Change You Want to See.” My Companions, I know I ask a lot of you – you who have already “born the heat of the day.” Why, some of you may ask, should you accept a challenge to take on yet again the task of improving your chapter? In answer, I remind you that we are engaged in important, indeed, magnificent work. We, as Royal Arch Masons, are a vital part of a great Masonic Fraternity. We are a part of an institution that has its own roots in that period of European Enlightenment that developed and established our own national values of liberty, democracy and religious tolerance

These are values and ways of government conduct we often take for granted in our nation – but which are rare or non-existent in many parts of our troubled world. And we each have the great honor of being part of an institution that historically has been largely responsible for their very creation and expansion. We as Royal Arch Masons, are, indeed, the heirs of a great heritage; we are, indeed, the trustees of priceless things. This is why I have asked our Grand Chapter Officers and ritual staff to wear ties with our national colors this coming year – to honor the values we Freemasons share with our beloved nation. This is why I do not hesitate to ask you to renew your commitment to improving your Chapters. The values our fraternity has helped perpetuate deserve our best efforts. This is why I challenge you to “Be the Change You Want to See.” I promise, in the coming year, to live by the charge I now give you. Let us all strive together to develop a cleaner and clearer vision of what our chapters can be – a vision of the difference between what they are and what we wish them to be – and then let us strive together to “Be the Change We Want to See.” Sincerely and Fraternally, Jon Humphreys Grand High Priest
YORK RITE LEADERSHIP SEMINAR SCHEDULED IN BELLFLOWER
Our second combined York Rite Leadership Seminar for California will be held at the Bellflower Masonic Center on Saturday, June 28th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Center is at 9813 Beach Street, in Bellflower. This seminar, and the several to follow at various locations throughout the state, are jointly sponsored by the Grand Chapter, Grand Council and Grand Commandery. They will provide current and future leaders with tools and information designed to improve leadership skills and strengthen our York Rite management. All Chapter members are invited and encouraged to attend one of these seminars this year. All seminars are free, and a free lunch will be provided.
A copy of the Leadership Seminar information sheet, with more information, is attached to this publication. Please note it asks for an RSVP to Bud Ramsey, so lunch and materials can be provided for the right number of attendees. Bud’s phone and email are on the bottom of the information sheet. If you are closer to Bellflower than any of the other seminar locations, please let Bud know you are coming – and attend this Bellflower seminar.
The Importance of Influence The second part of the definition mentioned in last month’s article on leadership is influence. In his New York Time Best Selling Book on Leadership John C. Maxwell says that “the true measure of leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less.” To be sure, being elevated to a position of significance is important. It implies a position that has associated with it power which in turn provides a person with the opportunity to demonstrate leadership. Consequently, power is effective for a short period of time in terms of establishing yourself as an effective leader. You can have a successful year as High Priest of a Chapter by conducting the meetings correctly, seeing that you secretary gets all the reports in, in a timely manner, and making sure that degrees are timely and proficient. That is good management of the Lodge. The Leader goes beyond management and explores what might be, considers new directions, explores new ways of using the resources of a lodge and, through his influence, moves the members in a new direction. Position can lead to a solid year. But, influencing your members to set a new path defines an individual as a leader. Fraternally, Arthur H. Walton

JON D. HUMPHREYS Grand High Priest
Most Excellent Companion Jon D. Humphreys was born in Riverside, California, on March 21, 1942. He attended public schools in Riverside, and holds a B.A. Degree in Political Science from U.C. Riverside. He worked for the California Department of Transportation for just over 40 years, in various cities around the state. During that time he worked primarily in human resources and labor relations activities, retiring in 2004. Our Grand High Priest married Sylvia Galloway in 1964. They have three children, Eric, Elizabeth and Sharon, and 5 grandchildren. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary on March 21st of this year. Jon was raised a Master Mason in Riverside Lodge No. 635 in 1964, and is a Past Master of Elk Grove Lodge No. 173 in Elk Grove. He is a member of Sacramento Chapter, Council and Commandery, York Rite, San Francisco Priory, K.Y.C.H.; Saint Francis Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine; Siminoff Council No. 485, A.M.D.; Golden State College, S.R.I.C.F., Ben Ali Shrine Temple, and Elk Grove Chapter No. 109, O.E.S. He is also a Past Bethel Guardian, Bethel No. 347, Job’s Daughters., and a Past Master Councilor of DeMolay International, and has been invested with the Degree of Chevalier and the DeMolay Legion of Honor.
TWENTY-ONE FOR FORTY-TWO! The 2014 Capitular Festival in Comptche will be held on Saturday, June 28th. It’s an all day affair, so come early (Friday night if at all possible) and stay late, at least for the BBQ afterwards. Twenty-one candidates is the goal this year, as we have learned in prior years that that is pretty near the maximum we can handle! Many Chapters will be contributing ritualis to the
degree conferrals, so this will be a great year to bring candidates from far and wide! See the flyer at the end of this newsletter.

GRAND LECTURER COMMENTS
As your new Grand Lecturer, please let me thank the Grand Chapter for electing me and putting their trust in my ability to perform in this role. I will do my best to bring to the position some new ideas, and perhaps some new products that will assist with ritual and administration of the Chapter. I do not bring to the position the knowledge and wisdom of my predecessor, so we all owe Fred Kleyn a debt of thanks for his ritual stewardship over the last five years. Phil Hardiman, PGHP
ROYAL ARCH HISTORY Of particular interest to all Companions and Sir Knights is the new addition to the History of the Royal Arch – Volume 4 is now available, which takes the history through 1996. This is the supplement to the original 3 Volume set prepared by Everett R. Turnbull and Ray V. Denslow. The 4th Volume can be purchased for $25. Volumes 1, 2, 3 & 4 of the History of Royal Arch Masonry have been reprinted. These books are hardbound and approximately 500 pages each. GOLDEN STATE RESEARCH CHAPTER
The website located at www.goldenstatechapter.org now contains a copy of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Grand Orations booklets. Also included is a copy of “The Royal Arch Path,” by MEC Phil Hardiman, KYGCH. The meeting at Grand Sessions on Monday, May 19th, was well-attended – 34 Companions, in fact. Copies of the Grand Orations 2013 were available to attendees; and 9 new members were balloted upon. Casey Latham, our outgoing HP, gave a

paper on researching the Royal Arch, which was followed by a talk by our Scribe, Companion Paul Clark, on the relationship between the Kaballah and Freemasonry. After the presentations, elections were held, with former officers moving up, except for the HP, who was elected the new Secretary! Bob Morrison was elected the new Scribe.
