12:45-1:25 Recognition and Awards

1:25-1:30 Fireworks-Katy Perry Traditional sing-a-long

2

“Firework – a combustible or explosive device for producing a string

display of light or a loud noise, used for signaling or part of a celebration”.

A song typically serves as the theme for our EOPS End of the Year Celebration. This

year our students selected the song “Firework” by Katy Perry. “Firework” I said,

what’s that about? I hadn’t heard the song because well…. I am more of an “old

school funk” kind of gal. So to make sure the song was appropriate, I asked the stu-

dents to play the song. They also printed the lyrics so I could read along. It quickly

became apparent as to why they selected this song for our celebration theme.

The lyrics tell a story of a person that feels he/she is floating, aimlessly and unconfi-

dently not having a direction. The song challenges the person to take the chance and

ignite the light inside of them and OPEN the doors they feel are closed… WOW…I

think we all have been there at one time or another.

Many of you are reaching an important pinnacle in your educational journey that

brings you to this celebration of your excellence. Some of you may have thought

being here today at this place, at this time, was a far reaching possibility or better

said maybe impossibility. But your determination and courage let you dream, shoot

across the sky and ignite that “firework” inside you…and we are glad and very proud

you did! Because you see…what we can do in EOPS is limited unless YOU decide to

make your dream a reality. You MUST believe in yourself, do the hard work and bust

down the doors of insecurity and doubt.

I once read a quote “don’t look at your life through a rear view mirror”… and this is

so true for many of us. When you are first generation college student, English lan-

guage learner, starting at the beginning with skill building classes, undocumented, or

economically unable to go directly to the four year university after high school but

you had the grades to go, it is so easy to get caught up in feeling like your past deter-

mines your future. But as we know that is not the case! Take in this moment, own

your place, and feel a sense of pride. YOU DESERVE IT!

3

Some of you will not be returning to EOPS next semester because you will be mov-

ing on but know you have left us all in “awe” of your accomplishments. You walk

through one door on to the next on your journey be it the workforce or a four

year university. But you are not the same person as when you started Sacramen-

to City College. Today and always you will shine brighter and more confident of

your light.

So although you may not be here physically you will always be “FAMILIA”. EOPS

will connect us. It is a distinction that separates you from other community col-

lege students. We hope that it was during those times in which you felt you did

not belong, college was not for you, you were “wasted space”, that EOPS made a

difference. The staff and faculty of EOPS hope that we played a small role in keep-

ing you in college, supporting you through, and encouraging you on.

Before ending I would like to thank our/your wonderful EOPS Student Assistants –

Andrea, Ariel, Calvin, Carlesha, Mee, and Sammy – they organized this entire

event. They worked hard to make this occasion special for you and your family.

On behalf of the proud staff and faculty of EOPS welcome and thank you for hon-

oring us with your presence at this year’s celebration.

Si Se Puede! Un gran abrazo del corazón/Yes it can be done! A big hug from the

heart,

Irma Rodriguez, EOPS/CARE Coordinator

EOPS Alum -San Joaquin Delta College (I won’t tell you the years!) ;)

To our SCC Family

EOPS would like to say “THANK YOU” to our campus family, our faculty, staff,

and administrators. Your support and “heart” assists us with providing

service with excellence. The successes of our students are a true testament

to our team and community effort.

The Student is…

The most important person on the campus. Without them there

would be no need for the institution.

Not a cold enrollment statistic but a flesh and blood human being

with feelings and emotions like our own.

Not someone to be tolerated so that we can do our thing. They are

our thing.

Not dependent on us. Rather we are dependent on them.

Not an interruption of our work, but the purpose of it. We are not

doing them a favor by serving them. They are doing us a favor by

giving us the opportunity to do so.

"Firework"

Katy Perry

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again? Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin Like a house of cards, one blow

from caving in? Do you ever feel already buried deep six feet under? Screams but no one seems to hear a thing Do you know that there's still a

chance for you

'Cause there's a spark in you? You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine Just own the night like the 4th of

July 'Cause, baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colours burst Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

You don't have to feel like a wasted space You're original, cannot be replaced If you only knew what the future holds After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe a reason why all the doors

are closed So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow

And when it's time you'll know

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine Just own the night like the 4th of July 'Cause, baby, you're a firework

Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework

Come on, let your colours burst Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon,

moon, moon It's always been inside of you, you, you And now it's time to let it through-ough-ough

'Cause, baby, you're a firework

Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" As you shoot across the sky-y-y Baby, you're a firework

Come on, let your colours burst Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe Boom, boom, boom

Even brighter than the moon,

moon, moon Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
