READINGS FOR SUNDAY, JULY 18, 2021 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-6 Second Reading: Ephesians 2:13-18
Gospel: Mark 6:30-34
FOCUS: Offer your gift, however inadequate, with
thanksgiving, trusting the power of God.
Today’s sign from John’s Gospel, the feeding of the five
thousand, shows the power of God. The boy gave five
loaves and two fish. It was a small amount, but it was all
he had. Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks, and God
provided food for many. We, too, can benefit from these
three steps: Offer what we have. Give thanks. Expect
God to act.
LITURGY OF THE WORD: In today’s first reading,
Elisha the prophet directs his protesting servant to give
his barley loaves to the people to eat. The Lord
multiplies this offering and feeds a hundred people, with
some left over. Paul urges the Ephesians to live in
humility, working to preserve unity. In the Gospel,
Jesus feeds five thousand people with five barley loaves
and two fish.
Readings for next week, July 25: Seventeenth Sunday in
Ordinary Time: 2 Kgs 4:42-44; Ephesians 4:1-6; John 6:1-
15; From Liturgical Commission Publishing, Lansing, MI

THE PASTOR’S PAGE
Dear Friends:
This week the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene who, for all the confusion
surrounding her identity, plays an essential role in the life of Our Lord. Depending upon whom one
chooses to believe, she is the sister of Martha and Lazarus from Bethany, the sinful woman caught in
adultery, a courtesan or, according to more sensational flights of fancy, the romantic interest of our
Lord. There is no basis in Scripture for any of this. What we do know is that Jesus cast out from her
seven devils, that she supplied him with material support, stood by him at the foot of the cross, was the
first to whom he appeared and, finally, acted as the “Apostle to the Apostles,” informing them of his
Resurrection. She embodies many aspects of Christian living: first-hand experience of God’s
redemptive grace, generous service, loyalty in the face of public scorn, love transcending death, and
witness to the real presence of the Lord.
There is so much food for reflection in the Scriptures for the Feast that it’s difficult to know where to
begin. The first reading from the Song of Songs was probably a love poem composed for the wedding of
a royal couple. Filled with beautiful imagery, this sacred book was variously interpreted as an allegory
for the love of God toward his people, Christ for his Church, and also Christ for the individual soul,
particularly a female religious. Divine love, of course, transcends romantic love, but is analogous to it;
both imply intense devotion; the Beloved even “thirsts” for Lover (the psalm). St. Paul adds that in light
of the Resurrection, our union with the Lord is not “according to the flesh,” that is, by way of the senses,
but through faith.
The details of Jesus’ appearance to Mary in the Gospel are noteworthy. In her grief, Mary wants things
to return to the way they were, with Jesus once again physically present. Curiously, she comes face to
face with him, but fails to recognize him, at least visually. But recall that the Lord, the Good Shepherd,
says of himself: “My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me (John 10:27).” St. John
Chrysostom remarks that beholding the full force of Jesus’ divinity “would have stupefied Mary. She
was not to be lifted suddenly, but gradually to high things.” And so, Jesus speaks her name, as only he
can, and she grasps his presence. I say “grasp,” because she literally attempts to take hold of him, and he
responds with the famous words: “Do not touch me.” (Noli me tangere.) Jesus is not giving her the
brush off. As Augustine tells us, “Touch is as it were the end of knowledge,” but there is more to come.
Jesus chooses to be present in a deeper way: through the experience of grace. (Today’s world, starved of
touch, should take note.) Finally, Jesus tells her that he is going “to my Father and your Father, to my
God and your God.” He uses the pronouns “my” and “your,” when he might have said “our.” Augustine
explains, God is Jesus’ Father “by nature, but ours by grace.”
This wonderful interplay between the human and the divine is obvious in today’s artwork, Antonio da
Correggio’s 1525 masterpiece Noli Me Tangere, based on today’s gospel. The artist’s biographer notes
that he never had the opportunity to study in Rome, and yet “no one ever handled colors better than he,
and no craftsman ever painted with greater delicacy, such was the softness of his flesh−painting, and
such the grace with which he finished his works.” As flesh yields to spirit, Mary progresses by divine
love, past the appearance of a gardener to the Risen Lord. May we who must make a similar passage
reap the same reward.
Faithfully,
Fr. Valentine
