Dear Parents/Guardians, Friends and Students of SAC, The annual SAC Walkathon is the most significant fundraising event we undertake at St Aloysius College. It is an occasion that all students look forward to and it makes an enormous contribution to our sense of identity and community. As I walked along the Torrens last Friday with the Year 11 students, I was impressed by their capacity to enjoy this simple activity, and the spirit of friendship and support for one another that was so evident. I thank the families and friends of our students who have so generously thrown their support behind the girls, ensuring that we are able to actively support works of Mercy. These include, in our local community, the Adelaide Day Centre, Catherine House and the Mercy House of Welcome, as well as supporting the Sisters of Mercy working in the Tiwi Islands and in Yarapos, Papua New Guinea. Without your support, this kind of outreach work would not be possible.

From the Principal’s continued.
Our Year 11 and 12 students went straight from the Walkathon to prepare for the Formal at the Festival Centre. The level of energy and excitement was wonderful and was maintained from start to finish. The dance floor was crowded and I was amazed that girls who had walked 10kms during the day, could still dance the night away. What I enjoyed most was watching the students interact in a different setting and seeing their recognition of the beauty and value of their friendships, often formed over many years at SAC. I would like to thank the Year 11 and 12 Coordinators, who always ensure that the night goes off without a hitch and all the staff and families who make it such a special night.
As a city school, we can provide a wide range of learning activities in the city and surrounds. However, parking is one of the tricky aspects of our location. We have negotiated with the Adelaide City Council a range of short-term parking options around the campus to enable drop off and pick up of young students. Please be mindful of the safety and wellbeing of both students and other road users when accessing these car parks. This is especially important in the mornings when many people are accessing the Angas St entrance to the SA Water car park, and please be aware of cyclists using the bike lanes. Your patience and consideration of others is greatly appreciated.
The Feast of The Holy Trinity last Sunday was a very suitable day to celebrate 54 of our primary students entering into preparations for the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist this year. As they recognise the presence of God in their daily lives, and deepen their commitment to their faith, the Rite of Welcome gives these students the sense that they are becoming part of a larger faith community through their connection to both our school and the Cathedral Parish. We thank Fr Paul Cashen and Fr Dan Harding for celebrating these Masses and making our students and their families feel so welcome.
Planning for the future of our College is critical to our success, and the Parent Forum being held next Tuesday 31 May from 6pm to 8pm is an essential element of this planning. The voice of all parents is important to us. You have chosen St Aloysius College as the school for your daughter so we are keen to hear more about the factors that influenced this choice and your hopes and aspirations for your daughter’s education. We warmly welcome your participation in this important conversation. Looking forward to seeing you in the McAuley Auditorium next Tuesday.

CAREERS & VET INFORMATION
Enrolments are now being taken for Semester 2 VET courses. VET courses involve students studying a course outside of school hours, with VET classes comprising only school students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Students receive nationally recognised training and SACE credits, which contribute to their school SACE progress. Students often study a VET course for personal interest, to gain employability skills that will give them the edge when applying for casual jobs or to develop skills to support future careers. Courses are offered in Semester 2 in the following areas:• Photography• Business• Hospitality• Fitness• Nursing and Health Care• Game Design• Early Childhood Education and Care• Makeup and SkincareIt is possible for Year 10 and 11 students to begin studying a full Certificate III VET course in Business in Semester 2 this year and complete the course in Semester 1, 2017. Successful completion of this Business course (2 semesters) or the Fitness course, allows students to use their VET qualification towards their aggregate for tertiary applications, thereby boosting their ATAR. Information about Semester 2 VET courses, including a pricelist, has been distributed to students via their school email and Home Class pigeon-holes. Information packs are also available from the Careers Centre in J101. Students may also request additional information by visiting the Careers Centre or contacting Ms Louise Murphy by email [email protected]
SEMESTER 2 VET COURSES
All Year 10 students attended the ‘Speak Easy’ presentation by well-known, Sydney based professional speaker Marcelle Bernard. The girls delighted in Marcelle’s engaging and informative presentation to further develop their communication strategies and public speaking skills. Marcelle coached our students on vocal variety, body language, facial expression and shared tips for confident public speaking. The St Aloysius College Library has copies of Marcelle Bernard’s book ‘Stand Up! Speak Up!’ available for loan for students wanting to polish their public speaking skills and hone their oral presentation skills.

‘BATTLE OF THE BANDS’On Friday 13 May, the SAC Primary Choir and Senior Stage Band performed at the ‘Battle of the Bands’ event hosted by Rostrevor College in celebration of Catholic Education Week 2016. The evening brought together students and families from various Catholic schools, creating an atmosphere of excitement and cohesiveness. Catholic schools that also participated included CBC, St Mary’s College, St Paul’s College, St Francis Xavier Catholic School, Loreto College, St Francis of Assisi School and Rostrevor College. The Stage Band, directed by Roger Downton, kicked off the evening with the dynamic piece ‘The Final Countdown’ which literally brought the house down. PEER SUPPORT PROGRAMDuring Term 1, the Year 11 Peer Support student leaders conducted a series of sessions for the Year 8 students to help them transition to the secondary school. The Year 11 student leaders completed a training day to help them prepare for the sessions and discuss some of the scenarios that may arise over the course of the program. The senior leaders had small groups of Year 8 students to lead, guide and inspire. Over the course of the nine-week program, they created fun, engaging sessions for their Year 8 students. The sessions included games, interactive activities as well as moments for group discussion and reflection. Topics covered included cooperation, communication, relationships, group dynamics and decision-making.The enthusiasm which the Year 11 students showed in the preparation, delivery and reflection of their sessions was impressive. The Year 8 students were able to take valuable insight and guidance from each session, as well as the formation of new friendships with the senior girls at the College. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the teacher mentors, the Year 11 student leaders and the Year 8 students for their positive participation in a very successful 2016 program.

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS
As Year 11 students, we became role models, as well as friends for the Year 8 students. Most importantly, this program allowed us to build relationships between the lower and senior secondary school community at SAC. Emilee Ong 11NRThrough the Peer Support program we were given the opportunity to help a group of girls find their feet during the first weeks of high school. It was wonderful to see how their confidence grew in such a short amount of time. We are very grateful for this experience and wish the girls the best. Caitlin Davies 11 NR & Chloe Cornelius-Inge 11SEThe Peer Support program made me feel more comfortable at high school and made me feel really welcome. Lucy Thiele 8RGThis program helped me in different ways, such as deciding what would be a smart and wise decision in a particular situation. Thi My Sieu (Michelle) Thach 8NWPeer Support is a really fun way to meet new people especially if you are new like myself. Fridericki Diamond 8RG
Year 7 primary JAM leaders were privileged to attend a refugee workshop with Ms Sandra Sofia (Primary Religious Coordinator), on Tuesday 17 May 2016 organised by Caritas and Justice for Refugees SA. We learnt about refugees, their experiences in reaching Australia and other countries. With students from other schools, we learnt what was needed for the journey. Students got the chance to discuss what to pack their own imaginary bag and bring what was most important to us. We learnt lots of information and statistics about refugees and asylum seekers through this workshop. It was extremely inspirational and we have gained much from this experience. We are currently in the process of sharing our knowledge and understanding with the primary classes in the coming month and have planned some activities for Refugee Week (June 20-25). What action will we take? Further information will be sent home in June so that students can participate in our activities.

JUSTICE FOR REFUGEES: What action will we take?
Every Wednesday at 3.30pm for the remainder of Term 2, students aged 16 and older are invited to participate in the Red Cross schools’ blood donation challenge. The first four brave SAC students donated blood on Wednesday 25 May, adding the first red droplets to the schools tally next to our College’s name. If you or someone you know in Years 10-12 may be interested in joining the ‘blood squad’, please email [email protected] to secure an appointment.

FAIR TRADE FORTNIGHTDo you know where your hot coffee, hot chocolate or tea comes from? What about your clothes? From May 8-22, we recognised Fair Trade Fortnight. During Justice and Mercy Group sessions, students have been learning about the benefits of supporting fair trade products and how in many industries, workers at the bottom of the supply-chain are being poorly treated. To raise awareness for fair trade and money for ACRATH (Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans), JAM leaders hosted a hot drinks stall on Wednesday and Thursday in Week 2. As people purchased their morning cuppa, they were encouraged to partake in a postcard campaign, asking brands such as Seed clothing to review their supply chain policies and make them transparent. The students enjoyed sharing their learnings and their passion with staff, students, parents and friends and raised more than $180 for a very worthy cause.
On Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 of May, eleven Year 9 and 10 Green JAM and Green House students represented St Aloysius College at the Switched On Schools Summit, hosted by the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and the Adelaide City Council. Old Scholar, Bec Taylor (2007), is a sustainability manager at the Adelaide Council, whose passion for social justice inspired the students during the two days as they heard from an array of guest speakers, had discussions with Lord Mayor Martin Haese, participated in workshops and led a rally in Victoria Square. Many other schools from around Adelaide attended the summit, allowing
the students to share ideas with like minded peers. The public rally concluded the summit on Thursday, with students from each school outlining actions they wish to pursue. SAC students made a commitment to campaign against school yard littering and to creatively promote recycling. Green House and Green JAM are committed to working together to ensure that SAC is an eco-friendly school, dedicated to reducing waste and increasing appreciation for our lovely environment. Stay tuned for plenty of upcoming news and activities!
