AuthOr’S NOte: The Sabor a Mí (Taste of Me) poems are an extract of The Stupid Diary, an unpublished
manuscript of more than 2,000 pages, written in Santiago de Chile during the height of the movement that
led to Salvador Allende’s presidential election in 1970. Some of the poems in The Stupid Diary became part of
the first Sabor a Mí of 1971, which, despite a signed contract with Ediciones Universitarias de la Universidad
Católica de Valparaíso (UCV), was never published. The second Saborami, published in England by Beau
Geste Press in 1973, included 20 poems from The Stupid Diary, and, in 2013, 100 poems from the manuscript
were published in Chile as El Zen Surado by Editorial Catalonia. Juliet Lynd, in her introduction to El Zen
Surado, cites testimony that offers two possible reasons the first Sabor a Mí was never published: either it was
censored before the Chilean coup of September 11, 1973, or the military threw it into the ocean, along with
other books, after the coup.
Saborami, Beau Geste Press (Devon, England, 1973).

a qué galaxias aludo
con mi sonrisa.
Opté por los senderitos salvajes,
el objeto de la poesía
siempre fue crear
rondas colectivas y espirituales
donde las cábalas
Juno y Aristóteles
bailan entre arbustos nuevos.
Desde el primer momento
conté con mi estupidez
y mi falta general de talento.
Siempre naufragué entre
sustantivos y verbos.
Me sentía y me siento
un predicador del asco:
a nadie ilumino
más que a mí.

I embroidered on my head long agothe signs of abandonment and failureno one had the fortune of knowingto which galaxies I alludewith my smile.I opted for wild trails, the object of poetrywas always to createspiritual and collective ringswhere conjecture,Juno, and Aristotledance among new shrubs. From the beginningI relied on my stupidityand general lack of talent.Always I shipwrecked amongnouns and verbs.I continue to feel I ama shitty preacher:I enlighten no onemore than me.

a esa hora desusada

In reality my lovesare the strange box of a Polish dollThe blonde’s eyes appearingfixed to her hips long after midnightthe garret always singular to loosena massive maneacross her back, its strandsthick and fine drapingher otter-like chinDeliberately she’d peer out from the walland nothing could be seen but the shadow of her breastshidden beneath marmots of hairAnd lovely was her skin’s radianceat that unusual hourHer waist’s digressionseasily discernedas bees through grassthe window neither open nor closedWhat I saw, yellow like crystal, rose from sleepy thighsamassed in unseemly tourniquetsEverything before me, a pale shimmerof hairs fanning delicatelyto reveal the pink or green skin I no longer knowof hips a million centimetersfrom my gaze.
