Page 8: Saarang India Quiz 2016- Finals

You saw the luster of shining stars, and not only looked at desolate sky.You endured deep disaster of autumn, and did not entangle with spring's eye.

You always revered intellect, no doubt; and never venerated before any image. You collided throughout life for doctrines, and did not detest with religious phase.

You learned to walk on burning embers, with bare feet and smiling face. You always learned to nourish properly, in every scarcity of life and race.

You called indigence a boon, not curse; and left no scope for any conscience. You saw from within the cottage even, and not only looked at big mansions.

You incarnated on earth as scientist, to search the truth, faith and composure. You never looked at external cover, but sought its internal shining luster.

You not only got the delicate love, of Shrimati Lalita _______,your wife. You also got the fondling of mother, Ram Dulari throughout your life.

You drove the chariot of statecraft, but couldn’t succeed to get its goal. You were of course done to death, and couldn’t return to your land with soul.

You did not die but became eternal, this firm belief I do have but.The slogan “___ _____” was left undone, now who is there to look after it?

Aabid Surti conceived of this character and started the comic strip in 1976. "Bennett, Coleman & Co wanted me to create an Indian character that could take on the popularity of the four foreign comics that ruled the market in India then—The Phantom, Mandrake, Flash Gordon and Tarzan," he says. "During that time, the Chambal Valley was becoming increasingly notorious, and there were exhortations to people to group together to fight crime. So I developed the character as someone who helps create a ‘citizens' police force’ to fight the dacoits.” The character is famous for his one liner “Ganga Maiya ki Kasam” .

11. Name the place or the ‘reason’.

There are various legends about the origin of the people here. According to one of them, it is believed that they are the descendants of Greek soldiers of Alexander's army. As the legend goes, some soldiers took refuge in this remote land after Alexander left the country and later settled there permanently. . Recent genetic typing of the this population is more consistent with an Indo-Aryan origin with a large proportion of Y-DNA haplotypes J2 and R1a associated with Indo-Aryan influences in South Asia than with a Greek origin which would have a different characteristic mix of Y-DNA haplotypes.  The locals claim it to be one of the oldest democracies of the world with a well-organized parliamentary system, guided by the their devta(deity) Jamlu rishi.

But we know of this place for a reason which has a page devoted to it on smokersguide.com.

26 . 2 etymologies 1 question

The verb “to X” originated in British India in reference to shooting the bird X, considered a challenging target. From this came the word “X er”

According to the Century dictionary :

The Y s roamed about the country in bands of from 10 to 100, usually in the disguise of peddlers or pilgrims, gaining the confidence of other travelers, whom they strangled, when a favorable opportunity presented itself, with a handkerchief, an unwound turban, or a noosed cord. The shedding of blood was seldom resorted to. The motive of the Ys was not so much lust of plunder as a certain religious fanaticism. The bodies of their victims were hidden in graves dug with a consecrated pickax, and of their spoil one third was devoted to the goddess Kali, whom they worshiped

The word Y comes from a Marathi or Hindi word Y* which differs from Y in one letter which in turn comes from a Sanskrit root “sthagayati” - he who covers or conceals

1. Language- Amendment Number 22

This language was included as the official language in 1967. In the year 1868, the Bombay Presidency  assigned Narayan Jagannath Vaidya to replace the Abjad with the Khudabadi script. The script was decreed a standard script by the Bombay Presidency thus inciting anarchy in the Muslim majority region. A powerful unrest followed, after which Twelve Martial Laws were imposed by the British authorities. The Legend of ‘Dodo Chanesar’ is a famous literary work in this language based on the ruler of the region where this language has its origin.

Page 114: Saarang India Quiz 2016- Finals

2. Contestant- Amendment Number 26

In India, the Privy Purse was a payment made to the royal families of erstwhile princely states as part of their agreements to first integrate with India in 1947, and later to merge their states in 1949 whereby they lost all ruling rights. It was abolished in 1971 by the 26th amendment.

Many erstwhile royals tried to protest the abolition of the Privy Purse, primarily through campaigns to contest seats in the Lok Sabha elections of 1971. They, however, received a rude shock when many of them were defeated by huge margins. A candidate for the Vishal Haryana Party, contested from the Gurgaon constituency, but received barely 5% of the vote in a two-way contest.

Page 115: Saarang India Quiz 2016- Finals

3. Two good words- Amendment Number 99

While quashing the National Judicial Appointments Commission, Justice Kurian Joseph (one of the 5 judges) stated the following:

There is no healthy system in practice. No doubt, the fault is not wholly of the Collegium. ……..Whether ‘Joint venture’, as observed by Chelameswar, J., or not, the Executive seldom effectively used those tools. Therefore, the Collegium system needs to be improved requiring a ‘__________’ and a ‘____________’, and hence the case needs to be heard further in this regard.

The words which mean openness and restructuring came into common lingo in the 1980s due to the policy followed by a politician.

5. Sole Class D- Amendment 7

Before the adoption of States Reorganisation Act, 1956, the constitution of 1950 distinguished between three main types of states:

• Part A states, which were the former governors' provinces of British India, were ruled by an elected governor and state legislature.

• The eight Part B states were former princely states or groups of princely states, governed by a rajpramukh, who was usually the ruler of a constituent state, and an elected legislature.

• The ten Part C states included both the former chief commissioners' provinces and some princely states, and each was governed by a chief commissioner appointed by the President of India.

 • One Part D state administered by the lieutenant governor.

6. Full faith- Amendment 61

The 26th amendment of the US constitution also did the same. The broader student activism movement protesting the Vietnam War across the country during the 1960s compelled the US government to amend it.

When the amendment was made in Indian Parliament in 1988, Rajiv Gandhi, the prime minister at the time, said it was "an expression of our full faith in the youth of the country".
